Eat whole wheat and multi-grain breads and pastas on a regular basis.  They should be part of a healthy diet.

{Unless, of course you have an allergen related to them.}

Well, losing weight this time around has been/is definitely more difficult.  Or, more precisely, losing it as fast as I did 4 years ago is more difficult.

I did weigh-in at 182.8, which is good, overall.  The thing that is proving difficult, of course, is sticking to my goal of 1800 calories daily on average.

I was looking at my April, May, and June spreadsheets of 2009; I noticed that I was maintaining in the low 170's on 2600 or more  a day.  Dang!  LOL!  I don't think that will be possible any more.  Something about age and metabolism, perhaps.

(1) Go to:  http://www.subway.com/Menu/MenuCategoryItems. aspx?CC=USA&LC=ENG&MenuTypeId=1&M enuId=35

(2) Choose your subway sandwich from the sandwich images.

(3) Then when you get a new picture of your sandwich, toward the bottom right is a prompt "Calculate Yours."  Click on that.

(4) Then you can click on the boxes for bread, cheese, veggies, and sauces. The new total will automatically show next to "Calories" under the Nutrition Information window.

(2) It's probably not a sign of something more serious, assuming that you do, indeed, eat pretty healthy most of the time.

Maintaining Anyone feel like doing much exercise is a waste of time? May 08 2013

I would offer this:  exercising burns calories.  So if someone runs for 6 miles at the same approximate speed as he/she runs for 3 miles, roughly twice as many calories will be burned.  If the person eats the same amount of the same foods for the day, regardless of numbers of miles ran, a person will lose more weight having run more miles.  Do this for an extended period, and one would probably see significant weight loss.

That should, in my opinion, be true for doing the elliptical, spinning, etc.  Exercising does burn calories; so if a person does not compensate by eating more (for example, if more exercising makes one hungrier), he/she will lose weight.

However, I agree that if one could, for example, stay the same weight, say, consuming 2000 calories and running 3 miles OR consuming 2600 calories and running 6 miles, the decision would have to be made if running the extra 3 miles is really worth it.

I suppose one consideration might be (even though the calories consumed - calories burned bottom line produces the same result) if the extra nutrients, vitamins, minerals are worth the extra exercising and food consumption.

For me, occasionally, what I have found to be a great meal is:

Using my 6-Quart Stir-Crazy electric popper:

  • 4 tbs. Country Crock light margarine (200 calories)
  • 10 tbs. Orville Redenbacher Gourmet popping corn (400 calories)

No salt and no topping after popping -- the margarine it popped in gives it a great flavor.  Yes, some may question the (un)healthy aspect of the light margarine, but on the plus side, for me:

  • 0g. trans fat
  • no hydrogenated oils
  • 75% less saturated fat than butter
  • 0 cholesterol
  • good source of insoluble fiber

Upshot:  I eat a 600 calorie meal of pure joy.

"I'm on paleo, but I know I'm doing it wrong by limiting my food consumption to lettuce and chicken, but not sure how to go about it."

I'm curious, and certainly there is no reason for you to reply, as to how accurate you were when you put the above on your "profile" page.

I would suggest you add whole wheat and multi-grain items to your diet.

And add fruits and other vegetables besides lettuce, of course.

I need to be eating lightly -- my weigh-in was 184.4, which is high, but I am slowly losing weight.

I think "bulking up" on occasion is often a good way to stimulate the metabolism.  My guess is with all your physical activity, the extra weight is primarily muscle, so probably no reason to want to lose it.

Ah, yes, the fun and games of the colonoscopy.  I have had one of those, and before that a sigmoidoscopy.  The fasting, the cleaning out the system, etc.  At least I think they have done away with the self-enema.  LOL!  I had the fun of doing that twice.

Best of luck!

Although for the most part, my right hip pain has gone away and I am back to full exercising, I noticed now that my left hip is beginning to be a bit sore.  I assume that there is some connection to hip flexor pain and/or IT.  I ordered a foam roller.  Normally, I question the validity of such gadgets; but since I have seen a preponderance of information suggesting foam rollers can indeed alleviate hip pain, I am going to give one a try.

It's been quite a while since I last posted on this thread.  I enjoy reading about the choices fellow posters make.

I've noticed that some of my favorite novels that I have read are others' least favorites.   Different yolks for different blokes, as the saying goes.

I really enjoyed reading the following:

(1) "Crime and Punishment." (Russian novel)
(2) "Lord of the Flies"
(3) "Catcher in the Rye"
(4) "The Red Badge of Courage"
(5) "Brave New World"
(6) "Great Expectations"
(7) "Of Mice and Men"
(8) "Pride and Prejudice"
(9) "The Old Man and the Sea"
(10) "Slaughter-House Five"

Yes, several of these are repeats of novels that I mentioned I enjoyed reading; but I read the complete list of all the novels posters "hated"; and from the ones mentioned, I chose the 10 novels that I have read multiple times each.

I think it's good there is disagreement among us concerning which novels we disliked reading.  In the long run, disagreements can be stimulating and thought-provoking.

Maybe someone could start a thread or threads about worse movies and/or best moves we have seen.

I'm probably not going to make my June 1st deadline, but I have had 8 days of averaging 1800 calories.  I am doing something a bit different -- allotting myself 59,400 calories for 33 days (last 2 days of April and all of May).  Although there will be days I go over 1800, overall, I am keeping a running spreadsheet so that come June 1st, my calories will come out almost exactly 59,400 consumed.  My goal is still to lose 10 pounds in 33 days, but, more realistically, I will probably lose 5-8 pounds.  I would be quite happy with 6 or 7.

Thanks, jenkcheng!  I appreciate your kind remarks.

Very best of luck to you, too.

=====
Well, true confession time:  I not only gained the 6 pounds I had lost before the hip/lower back problem -- I gained 2 extra.  Some of my relatives had some bad luck lately, so my wife and I went to visit them in the hospital about 100 miles away.  Once we ate at Golden Corral, just us two.  Then, we talked so much about it, we ate there again a few days later with some of my relatives who were also visiting at the hospital.  Then, for the days I did not exercise, I ate and ate and ate -- and drank cold beers.
=====
Now, today, I am embarking again on a dedicated diet and exercise regimen.  My hip and lower back feel pretty good.  The last 3 days, I have been doing yard work and walking for about an hour a day and spinning for 30-45 minutes a day.  I also have gotten back into light lifting.   My goal is still to rejoin the weigh-in thread by June 1st.  I am hoping to keep to a 120-180 minute daily exercising program and an 1800-2200 daily calorie consumption goal.

Best of luck to all you Maintainers!

So Thomas Wolfe was correct, afterall.  "You can't go home again."
You being me and home being the Maintenance Thread.

I have had a back right hip/lower back "pain" for a few days.  The interesting thing is that it has not kept me from exercising over 3 hours a day.  However, the flip-side is that just getting in and of the car, or getting up from the couch or computer chair, is somewhat painful.  And walking is much more annoying than an hour or more on the exercise bike.

I talked to my health-wellness doctor, who told me regardless if I am not feeling pain while exercising, I should take a few days off and go see a medical doctor.

So the medical doctor told me to take a week off, see him again if there is no improvement, and he would set me up for an MRI, etc.

Z'ounds!  What sucks is that I had lost 6 pounds from April 1 through April 15.

Thus, I am kicking myself off the Maintenance thread again until I can actually get back to maintenance weight.

Best of luck to all Maintainers.  No one ever said it would be easy...of if someone did say that, he/she was mistaken.

As I recall, the last time I was in an elevator, I had forgotten to wear my glasses.  I kept poking a 7-year old boy in his eye, until his mother finally pressed the elevator button for us.  I felt it did make the elevator faster.

Also, on the same page/site, is a link for reading the article "Women Who Attend Religious Services May Live Longer."

My take on this, then, is that women should go to church regularly, showing some significant, but classy, cleavage; men should then go to church to stare.

They will all benefit from the religious experience.

I'm new to the site and have talked to just two people and both have warned me that people in the lounge are asses and like to cut ppl down (especially younger folks). Seems kind of juvenile and pathetic but society puts out all types I suppose... I haven't encountered anybody saying anything stupid just yet but I'm curious, Does anybody else seem to have problems here?

Yes, I am proof positive what happens when asses like to cut young people down.  I have had what has become both a terrifying and awe-inspiring experience.  I was 22, four years ago when I joined Calorie Count.  I made the mistake one day of posting in The Lounge.  Within 5 days, I had aged 40 years.  I had my lawyer email CC, notifying it of an impending law-suit.  She was told that I must have a notarized, official birth certificate showing my age, or I could make no legal claim.  Somehow, those Lounge bullies falsified my birth certificate, and now I am legally 40 years older than I should be.

This came about because I had dared to post in The Lounge.

On the plus side, I have continued to do old-man exercising (spinning, walking, light weights, etc) around 3 hours a day, for 4-years now.

{On the down-side, unlike the previous three holiday seasons -- Late December through February -- when I gained 10-15 pounds, this March I did not switch back to 2000 or so daily calories while I lost the gained weight.  I inexplicably chose to maintain my weight gain by consuming around 3400 calories daily.}

However, also, on the plus side, this April I have gone 12 days slowly-but-steadily losing weight the correct way: eating healthy, but less, and exercising faithfully.

My goal is to be in my weight window by June 1st.

Thank you for bringing this up. This is a personal pet peeve of mine, and I have restrained myself so many times from correcting the grammar mistake myself.

Maybe it's because I'm both an English Teacher and a Grammar Nazi, but a little part of me dies whenever I see other simple mistakes such as  "they're", "their", and "there", as well as "your" vs. "you're". The worst one is the misuse of " 's ".  I once saw a sign that said "Banana's". Banana's? Banana's what?!

It's been a long while since I studied the rules of punctuation; however, if I recall correctly, I was taught that periods and commas go inside the quotation marks.
