Weight Loss Can I use the calories I burned? May 27 2010

Also keep in mind that it takes calories to digest food. So if you consume 300 calories, you will be using some calories in digestion. If you work off that 300 calories on the treadmill, you might actually be at a deficit.

Do you really want to compare the accomplishments of vegan athletes with non-vegans?

No, we don't want to compare the accomplishments of vegan athletes with non-vegans, but we do want to compare vegan athletes with athletes who eat animal-based diets exclusively. Isn't our discussion regarding the comparison between plant-based diets (vegan) vs. animal based (carnivorous) diets? 'Non-vegans' (including omnivores), is a larger and more general population than our sample at question (which is: individuals who eat food derived exclusively from animals). Thus, comparing accomplishments of vegan athletes and non-vegan athletes:

So how about I attempt to do just that: compare vegan athletes with athletes who eat food derived from animal sources exclusively - except, I'm stuck. I can't think of a single athlete who doesn't eat plants.

Does anyone want to help?

Does not really matter how many grams of fat/carbs/protein you can take in per day. They all provide energy. Optimally, if you are body building a good macro ratio would be 40/40/20 (Carbs, Protein, Fat) or (50/30/20). As for your caloric needs, enter your data on calorie count, it will tell you what's a good amount, depending on your for your specific goals.

Also, there's no such thing as spot fat removal. So if you want to lose the fat from your tummy, you're gonna have to lose the fat from all over. In the same way, if you want to gain mass on other parts of your body, you will also be gaining fat all over too.

This is essentially why certain bodybuilders would encourage you to go through cutting/bulking phases.

Weight Gain How long to rebuild atrophied muscle? Jan 14 2010

Hey Joseph,

The time it takes to build muscle will depend on a variety of factors including whether or not you strength train, how often, your protein intake, your body type etc. On average it takes an individual 1 year to gain 5 to 10 lbs of muscle mass (muscle only).

If you want to gauge and estimate of what you can expect from strength training, go here: http://scoobysworkshop.com/expectations.htm

This guy really knows what he's talking about.

Good luck Joseph!

Thanks for asking this question cowcow, I've been wondering the same thing for a long time too. I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself to restrict myself to only healthy calorific foods and completely cutting out any sort of junk like potato chips or ice cream and brownies and cake etc (albeit, I'm on a slightly different goal path because although I'm also trying to gain at a healthy rate I'm also trying to maximizing muscle mass gains also), so I've been trying to ensure that all of my meals are loaded with protein and fibre. This fills me up much much quicker than junk so I'm probably eating less than I really could - this might explain why I'm not gaining. I also have a tendency of feeling like crap when I have cheesecake instead of .. full fat cottage cheese/yogurt for example.

Over the holidays I literally gorged myself with ice cream and pizza everyday for a week and remember feeling too full to eat a single grain of rice after my meals. When I stepped on the scales I discovered I had gained nothing, so I've really come to the conclusion that I can eat as many empty calories after my meals as I could. So now I'm trying to get over this uneasiness I have about eating low nutrient/protein calorific foods, and it really serves to know that I totally don't have to beat myself up after.

Next time, enforce a 'don't ask, don't tell' rule. you'll be much happier not knowing your partner's past. I've slept with dozens and my partner might have too, but we don't aks, don't tell. It's going to lead to problems.

Yves Good Veggie Dogs, taste like canned processed hot dogs. I've always loved canned hot dogs as a kid so I was ecstatic to find that they tasted almost identical!

This is normal. It means you're growing up. If you feel like crap about it, I'm sure you're probably not the only one. I've studied somewhere that frequently, teen girls experience a dip in their self-esteem because inevitable changes in body composition in adolescence takes a girl away from the 'cultural ideal.' Also, our cultural ideal is not realistic. When you can come to realize that most others are also in your shoes, you should start welcoming these changes as a symbol of your transition into womanhood. Celebrate it, your boobs are symbolic of your power to nurture children.

Recipes Protein Ice Cream! Dec 13 2009

I think this idea is ingenius! I will try it and let everyone know how it turns out. Also, I agree with Julz on the protein powder - perhaps using it in milkshakes really is the dullest, boringest, way to get it in your system...

I've used them in baking muffins, pancakes, cookies etc and i've also tried to sprinkle them in my milk for cereal and oatmeal. If you have a tasty protein powder like I do (peanut butter chocolate), it really gives the baked goods and cereal a kick!

I really like the idea of protein ice cream. I am working on building muscle so I do want to maximize my appropriate protein intake. I've made my own version of protein ice cream by freezing silken tofu blended with frozen fruits.

Firstly, good job for having the incentive to burn off what you over ate!! It sounds to me like you know what you want and you are firm on your goals of how to get there. That is something remarkable.

The extra calories won't affect you at all if you burned them off, today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow ....

Some people have a weekly calorie target. If you go over today, make it up tomorrow. Just make sure you aren't binging, which I'm certain you aren't. You seem pretty organized about this, so thumbs up for that.

Also, I'm proud of you for working off the 400, instead of starving it off. Working off the 400 makes sure you still get enough minerals and nutrients from the other foods that you consume. When you create a deficit by cutting out foods, you're inevitably cutting out the nutrients in your diet too.

you must understand, im a dancer.

theres a reason i have to be thin....

niceoneman,

whenever i watch 'So u think u can dance' i can't help but notice that the amazingly talented dancers on the show in fact aren't thin. why is it that you insist the need to be thin? i'm not challenging you, but i just want to know -- is it perhaps a different type of dance that would be more advantageous for lighter dancers? i do know that the dancers on that show are definitely not thin, in fact some of them have very burly, muscular thighs -- and i think it looks really sexy actually. Just curious, i've never danced in my life.

(except in my undies in front of the mirror on some rare mornings lol)

when i was your age, me and my friends frequently (maybe couple times a week) would go to McDonalds and we'd each get about 2-3 double cheeseburgers and scarf them in the middle of the night since nothing else is usually open. I don't think we ever gained an ounce of weight from it. i think at your age i would not stress out too much about cheat meals, because once your metabolism catches up to you, you'd surely regret not eating all the bad things you can when you still were able to!! i'm not saying that you should have 2-3 cheeseburgers a night like i did, everyone's different. but i'm saying that at your age i was ok with eating crap without being too hard on myself
