You can try making the workout more challenging by increasing the incline on your treadmill. |

| Fitness | Ladies, to use or not to use gloves .... | Feb 21 2013 16:00 (UTC) |

I have callouses from lifting and rowing, but as my weights increase it's getting harder and harder to maintain good grip on the bar as I go from lift to lift. I think I'm going to look into getting a pair of gloves for certain lifts (mainly it's hard for me to do traditional squats with the weight on my shoulders) while building grip strength and callouses on other lifts. |

Egg whites deal a big protein bang for your calorie buck. |

Calories remaining would make more sense if we had a goal deficit. That's actually a good idea, can it be implemented? |

I do not like the "remaining calories" option... I'd rather have the calories estimated so that my deficit would be close to accurate. |

Chili or soup for sure. Also, you can grill/bake/poach a bunch of chicken at the beginning of the week and add it to different meals - chicken sandwiches, chicken salad, chicken on top of a salad etc. |

Nuva Ring is the best!! I have been on and off BC for years and previously was reliant on a variation of the Pill... I tried low hormone, Seasonale, etc. I will admit part of my issue was forgetting to take it or not taking it at the same time every day, so Nuva Ring solves that problem. My doctor also said the hormones are more localized to the midsection so mood swings are lessened and it probably doesn't help as greatly with acne as oral contraceptives do. I also get it for free because my doctor's office always has samples! And that's my two cents! |

I've dislocated my right patella twice, and now pretty much stick to linear movements: biking, running (straight), rowing, etc. I just don't want to risk injuring myself again by playing lacrosse in the grass, and even swimming breast stroke ends up hurting. If you're definitely going to do MMA (which does not strike me as a low-impact type of sport), make sure your stabilization muscles as mentioned above to reduce the risk of another dislocation, and for sure get fitted for the proper brace! |

You should browse eatingwell.com... they have so many great low-cal recipes, and often give you the measurements just for two servings. A lot of times, they will also give you "prepare ahead" tips. That site has saved my dieting life from being super boring and terrible at the dinner table! |

The Kraft shredded fat free cheddar is perfect for my use... which is basically limited to on top of eggs in the morning. It doesn't melt very well in the microwave, though. |

I eat either egg whites or Better n Eggs every day for breakfast depending on what's in my fridge. The Better n Eggs (egg substitute) has added nutrients, which I appreciate, so I prefer that, but it is way more expensive than buying eggs and using the fresh whites. |

As a fellow rower, I think you should know if you can do it or not. The motion of rowing is literally standing up on the footboards. Probably if it's that swollen, you wouldn't even be able to get to full compression, so I'd definitely second the RICE method advice. Ice ice ice, and talk to your coach, doctor, or athletic trainer if one is available for treatment options. |

| Fitness | running inside vs. outside | Mar 01 2011 18:27 (UTC) |

The treadmill is inherently easier because it is a conveyor belt moving underneath you, and if you just hopped up and down, you would be "moving forward." When I go on the treadmill, I usually bump up the incline slightly to make them a little more even, since when running outside, you have to push off harder than on a 0% incline treadmill. If you do the same, you might find the experiences more even when it comes to catching your breath. |

I use 0% Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for French onion dip, ranch dip, etc. Less fat, more protein, more delicious. |

This is me right now... I started at 188 in July, got down to 157 in October, holidays & work stress mean that now in January I'm back to 170. I'm so disappointed that I fell off the wagon so hard, but then I remember how successful I was when I started and kept getting the positive reinforcement of clothes getting looser and the scale's numbers going down, so I know I'll get there again. |

Definitely want to get back on track before my birthday in the beginning of December. GW for November 8 is 158.0. GW for end of November is 155.0. GW weight for end of 2010 is 150.0. End GW is around 140, we'll see! |

| The Lounge | SAT/ACT Becoming "Optional" | Oct 15 2010 05:14 (UTC) |

The SAT does not actually indicate how a student will perform in college. A separate matter is that the SAT is skewed to favor white upper middle class/wealthy students because these are the students that generally receive the most preparation for the exam at school and also the ones that can afford to take a class that teaches directly to the test. The SAT is taken predominantly on the coasts and midwest metropoles (Chicago, Minneapolis, etc.), whereas the ACT fills in the middle of the country. Colleges like Smith/Vassar/Wesleyan/BC/Ivy Leagues probably don't take SATs into account as a main decision point when determining acceptances, but I'm sure they love to maintain their reputation when publishing their medians in US News & World Report and on their admissions websites. I was in the test group for the "new SAT" that tests out of 2400... on my essay, I got 8 possible points out of 12, yet on my AP exam, I scored a 5 out of 5. So I'm not sure that the SAT is actually consistent (at least on the writing section) with actual student abilities. Getting rid of the SAT would probably only result in fewer headaches for high schoolers, their parents, and their educators, not to mention acceptance decisions based on true merit. |

I'm in the first phase of the nutrition plan as well, and I look more at the overall percentage of my diet versus figuring out what one serving of protein is and one serving of carbohydrate is. |
