in the face of all the somewhat cranky comments, i have to note that this is a plateau buster if i ever saw one. good on you for analyzing the food you are swapping in and out of your menu.

Weight Loss How long till the weight starts coming off again? Jan 30 2011

zig-zagging calories really helps. recall that just like your body gets used to motions and you may burn less calories doing th same exercise, your body gets efficient at storing when you eat similarly too often. switch things up!

Plan a nice long week chock full of high-burn activity. Reorganize the whole house; offer to help someone pack, move and unpack; go on a long hike or camping trip. When i was at a long plateau, i suddenly got a job cleaning and boy-oh-boy did that change everything!

I am now at a little plateau myself (school and winter combo, ugh) and am trying the zig-zag and looking for something to burn off a load of calories. good luck!

Weight Loss 1200 a day Jan 30 2011

around 1200 is what the site suggested for me. I find it way too low. i naturally eat around 1600 and burn around 2000 a day. Any splurging, and i gain weight, so to lose weight i have to exercise and eat less than 1400.

Not sure why the site sets me at 1200, but when i do eat only 1200 calories, my diet is unbalanced (either i hit the right amount of fat, but not enough carbs, or i am full on low fat carbs but lack in protein) and i am either hungry or sleepy.

any ideas?

the smaller frame thing has finally sunk in for me too. I lost a cup size, going from 36C to 34B that i miss, but i keep telling myself i still have some boobs.

the definition in my thighs is getting better. i did not dawn on me that i would eventually lose weight there too, and now i have, they feel totally alien!

Awesome thread! wish it had been here years ago when i first joined :)

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi, and that this site is a godsend. I went from over 185 pounds to 139 pounds over two years by tracking, planning, learning and sharing.

This site is awesome, this thread is awesome, and you are all awesome. Just thought i would mention ~

Fitness Bat Wings! :[ Jan 21 2010

i barely have bat wings... just a tiny bit of paunchy skin there from weight loss that i am normally barely aware of. today, while talking to a classmate i saw her see it and notice and it was so hard for me to not explain the weight loss and age thing. being in class with a load of 20 year olds really highlights the differences between them and us more mature counterparts.

working the muscle to tone up what is under the flesh can help a little. make sure you moisturize often to restore elasticity. If a year or two after reaching your goal weight the flesh is still unsightly, speak to a doctor for options.

It really takes a long time for skin to bounce back :)

i would agree, and suggest the same to other people - but, after going through seven different shoes with assorted discomfort (and yes, professionally fitted new-balance and others) these give me no grief so they are good for weights and elliptical. No way would I run in them, rest assured.

MEC is amazing isn't it! I have a location nearby and love to browse for camping and extreme gear... never buy any... lol... but it is the best place hands down.

kettlebells are a fun way to mix it up. you can take your basic moves and do them with irregular objects like medicine balls and therabands.

exrx.net has a great list of just about every move known to man.

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

it is a vast site, and you can find moves by body part or by method. have fun~

get an adult hoop at walmart (or similar) that has no weight. Use that until you are awesome at it. my sister and i made spectacles of ourselves in her front yard all summer once and we could hula forever and a day with unweighted hoops. Once you body is really at home with the hoop, then weight it.

We had a zillion fun moves like hula on the neck, hula both arms, hula one leg at a time, hula up high, hula down low. we got a little nuts with the hula.

i keep forgetting my water bottle. lol. i have a stainless steel one for hiking and camping that i mean to bring.

i suppose the whole question enters the realm of necessity and experience - i lost a cup size with the 50 pound loss, so i totally understand the need (my past need) for a good sport bra and that is somewhere you spare no expense. Underarmour should really be bought new with thought put into the purchase, so that makes loads of sense. Weightlifting gloves, if you are far beyond your first year are a must, and you can go through the cheap ones pretty fast with sweat and wear. Depending on the person and activity, shoes are key to form.

seems most of us that have responded are pretty brass tacks and bare bones when it comes to workouts. I find that the gear and methods can be as addictive as exercising - you know, shopping and browsing for the perfect thing, learning more about whats out there, looking for the best fit for you and your routine. Hard pressed to name what is the most exciting thing about fitness, the results or the community!

:) thanks all for input.

Fitness Exercising-Knee Pain Jan 17 2010

i would get the advice of a doctor for certain. If you have significant weight to lose, or have never exercised, you could be suffering a working-in period - you shoes could be the wrong fit for exercise - you could have injured yourself - you could have improper form - only a doctor or trainer could give insight really.

As a litmus test, maybe try cardio only for a week - and see how you feel (stop if the pain persists or gets worse and go see the doctor) then try weights only for a week and do the same. It could be that you just need to get used to working out... it's a tough call when described only as knee pain.

My knees are kinda knocky too, but i find a full body workout and cardio helps, so all may not be lost! check with the doc, and have a trainer check your form.

Weight Loss I can't not eat pasta! Jan 17 2010

so, yes, 1000 calories a day is a road to starvation and weight gain. yes, Gain.

that said, there is nothing wrong with pasta at all if you work it into your diet in a smart way ~ you could mix it up with homemade pasta (egg, flour, pepper... you can't get healthier than that), whole wheat pasta, rice pasta, soba noodles.

It may take some experimentation for better or worse but it will certainly be fun and interesting. Lately, I have been all over egg noodles from the asian grocer and egg noodles from the italian grocer - the varieties of this simple food ar mind boggling!!

As zonemikel noted, watch the toppings. A simple marinara can be whipped up at home and packed with veggies. Meat can be lean or... as i used to do when vegan, try red lentil, adzuki beans, barley, buckwheat or anything in combination to make a grain packed sauce. Try a cup of cottage cheese with a teaspoon of nutritional yeast in a blender to make a faux-fredo.

I adore making tagliatele homemade (one egg, a handful of flour, pepper - mix - roll super thin and cut into strips or use a pasta machine - boil for 2 minutes) with a pat of butter on it. naked pasta! this brings up the main point...

... Portion Control.

Please power-pack your pasta! Use heaps of healthy sauce on top of a modest amount of noodles. A serving of pasta is One Half Cup of Cooked pasta. I love love love pasta... and my portions used to be massive. not anymore. massive portions of healthy sauce, yes!

Soba noodles are my fave though for sure. Buy them in asian sections and top with loads of steamed veggies. add a little spicy low-cal thai sweet pepper sauce and wow!

K, so i wrote a novel, but I love pasta as much as the next girl and learned to live with a healthy amount and maybe appreciate it more than i used to!

expand your pasta horizons, not the portions! :)

Fitness Pilates Jan 16 2010

pilates makes you more aware of your core, thats for sure. it does not really increase strength - for that you require resistance.

any movement is good. anything that gets you breathing deep and warming up is good! my sister does pilates every day and it really inspired her and improved her health.

nurtition, weightlifting and some cardio are optimal for weight loss :) yet pilates fits in very nicely.

Fitness Functional Strength - Your thoughts Jan 12 2010
22:34 (UTC)

the second gym i joined was a YMCA. Aside from the usual gang of grunting men in the free-weight section, there were two men that stood out from the rest. All the exercises they did seemed so pure, so functional. They lifted irregularly shaped objects. They focused on core strength and basics. They were extremely strong and had great endurance. I would see one at the gym - he would be there before me and long after me - then I would see him running several kilometers later in the day.

Every move they made stuck in my mind, and if there were anyone I would like to emulate in the weight-room, it would be them. I always wondered what they did in life that demanded the regimen they chose.

So, ya, I wish I could do a pull up. Someday, maybe. That is one exercise (out of the Big Three) that I agree has the highest functionality coupled with the highest indicator of fitness.

Lunges are perhaps too low on the functionality when compared to squats. Squats are forever functional even though we don't lift things from the ground over our heads often, (that idea made me laugh when whoever posted it) they work fundamental groups of muscles in a way that pushes our capabilities in several applications - breathing better, walking better, strengthening the back, improving balance, building the legs, increasing flexibility - and whatever else i have missed :)

hmm... can i carry more groceries since i have been working out? yup. even my modest effort has greatly improved my functional strength. Would I trade it for a sport specific regimen? nope.

I had a free session like that at Goodlife > flash forward two years when I applied to be a personal trainer at Goodlife and was told that my income was pretty much entirely based on what I made from clients. There was no hourly rate.

So, if it was at Goodlife, or a similar brand, I can understand.

So, backing up my story ~ The information gained at the first free session is very valuable. Since you can see through the scare tactics, the readings such as weight, water content, muscle mass and all that is a great start-point for you!

Work out for a year or so and take another 'free' session to see where you are.

If you ever feel like a duck out of water after six months of learning, research and working out on your own, pay for one session to get some questions answered then carry on from there.

Some people really do require the services of a personal trainer - A good trainer can spot these people and give them the help they need. Some people like to toss money around - A smart trainer will let them.

Vegetarian Subtle vegetarian? Dec 18 2009

i have met some super young vegans that are pretty intelligent about their food choices. sometimes though i do wish there was an IQ test for this site... the weight loss forum is rife with brainlessness at best.

i liked the response that stated something like, why choose a label when one can simply say 'i dont eat a lot of meat'. it took me a while to realize that one myself!

i eat red meat once in a while, fish once in a while, chicken twice a month or so, eggs weekly and milk daily (in coffee)... so ya... not a vegetarian... but i do enjoy some vegan meals~

better than being like "i am a lacto-ovo-pesco-poulo-vegetarian during the fall/winter/spring but go all carnivore in the summer at barbeques."

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
