Hey Lizzy!!

I can definitely relate to the period issues, I lost mine in 2007, got 2 cycles in 2011 and just last week got my first natural period in 5 years.  Im older though so I am not sure if this will 100% apply since I had 10 years of periods before I lost mine and I assume you've only had about 2-3?

I had to get to a BMI of 21 to get mine back, I think after years or I guess months in your case of a severly low BMI your hypothalamus stops properly sending out the correct hormones to regulate menstruation.  At 112-115 your still pretty underweight and I dont think your body will be able to produce a period until you get to at least 125lbs for your height.

Your also still growing being so young so dont be afraid of gaining weight for your health, your body needs the nourishment!!

If you have time research Functional Hypothalamic Ammenorhea (sp?) it gave me a lot of good information!
Hugs! and message me if you have any questions!!

Original Post by francateresa:

Hey ladies....does anyone know if it is that more difficult to have your period return the older you are?

My docotor said that since I am 33 ; I have to work that much harder than a teenager recoverying from an eating disorder?

Emmy....did you have symptoms?

Ok I know this is way after the fact since this post was from 2011. Buuuut if anyone is still wondering about age and missed periods.  I didnt have a period from 2007-2011 (Ok I had 2 periods in that 4 year period) tried to get past anorexic like behaviors in 2010 but still had episodes of disordered eating (only eating raw veggies, fat free or low fat foods etc)

2 months ago, I just had enough started eating desserts brownies to be exact and it didnt stop there went for icecream etc, got my BMI to 21 (had to suck it up that I need to weight 130 not 120's to menstruate) but its worth the health benefits my skin is shiney and my hair grew and got my first period last week!!

Oh the moral of the story all of this happened after I turned 30!! In fact I ovulated for longer than I did when I was in my early 20's so 30's shouldnt be any more difficult!! Good luck it totally can happen all!!

Just wanted to share that I am in the exact same spot as you all! In fact its sometimes so depressing to get pants because they fit everywhere then depending on the time of day are super tight in the stomach area.

Aside  from ED recovery, not really sure if I have any food allergies, the only dairy I eat is in the form of yogurt.

I chalk it up to slow digestion from years of being not so nice to my body.
I actually have an appt with a GI doc next week, will let you know if he sheds any insight on this.

PS I also eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies which certainly doesnt help I am sure.

Totally glad I found this thread! Was having a bad post ED day well week actually.
Like Secret Tiger I get tense over big dinners, something about eating a big meal late freaks me out.

I also feel bad/gross if I eat in my car, doesnt matter what it is even fruit or veg, and not eating on plates or bowls even if its snacks bothers me sometimes. (well a lot of the times)

tryhard and rue yes!  I know exactly how you both are feeling, my original ED issues came after I was laid off and out of work for 3 months, it is then that I was home bored and became so focused on my weight ugh!

Now I am in the same pattern and its frustrating when food/weight/calories are on my mind from waking up to going to bed.  Sometimes I cant even get through a whole movie without fixating

So happy I found this thread! I thought it was just something I was going through!
Reading all of you ladies stories it was like reading my own over and over!  While I am not sure how to get a handle on the situation all of the time knowing there are others out there having the same issues helps!

My biggest problem and I hope to god someday its over I cant go an hour, half hour without thinking about food in some way.  How much I love it, hate it, what im going to eat what im not going to eat! It makes me crazy sometimes!

While I am glad to not be ammenorhic, cold all the time and dizzy, I dont know how to stop constantly thinking about food!

I also wanted to add that I think my binge foods are so out there! Although I read the one girl who ate diet swiss miss (I eat them all the time)
Anyone have any odd binges involving artificial sweeteners? (Equal splenda etc) for the past 3 months of my recovery I have been eating tons of peanuts and cashews with packets and packets equal and diet hot chocolate and crunched up saltines (like a sleeve of saltines and cups and cups of nuts)
all to still feel unsatisfied, why cant I just eat 1 fun sized snickers bar and be done with the craving!

today my BMI is 14.4 with 17% fat with loadsa exercise so no wonder i havent had a period again in a while....god just typing this makes me realise again how stupid and crazy i am, yet its hard to get back on track as u know.

im sure all the research points towards BMIs over 20 but i really think bodyfat and the stress on the body of restriction and (excessive) exercise play a big part too.

Oh my gosh hunny! a BMI of 14.4 is severe malnutrition to the point where you ARE doing inreversable damage to your body!!

I know you know all this but your killing yourself, and we can only lose and abuse our bodies then gain back so many times before your body gives up!
Please get help again your in a very dangerous area here with your physical and emotional health!

Orlaith and Miss renee! I totally understand your concerns actually infertility is what ultimately made me decide to get better, I was 27 (not in a relationship or anything mind you) but when I went to my gyno and asked her about it since I had not had a period in 3 years she started talking about how I would need donor eggs etc etc

This was my driving force to become really agressive about recovery, and I am happy to report that I now menstruate, ovulate and see a new gyno so while I still am not quite ready to have a baby I have the normal cycle back.

But I understand your being upset and frustrated!! I was awfully worried too (I even joined an online infertility support group!)

You do need a BMI of at least 20, well my  case 20.5 and now 21.
I had to eat fats and not just nuts and avocados, it wasnt until I incorporate red meat and a full fat dairy serving each day did mine come back

Good luck with everything! If you ever want to talk message me!

Hi Turtleblues!!
It's funny I havent been on the CC board in about 4 months and wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing and hopefully offer some encouragement to other ladies experiencing the same kind of issues I was and then the first post I read was yours!

I can say I shared the exact same concerns as you, infertility, osteoporosis etc!
My gyno was less than helpful (I wont get into my rant on her b.c it just frustrates me to think that there are health care professionals out there like her)

Anyway, heres is a little quick background, I lost my period in 2007, from a very restrictive diet, I still ate but limited it to very few fat free foods.
Didnt have a period for almost 3 years, around 2009 I tried eating more gaining some weight going from a BMI of 18 to 20, nothing happened.  Started to get freaked out after seening my gyno in Feb 2010 who told me I was most likely infertile and probably had premature ovarian failure and that it probably had nothing to do with my strict diet so that wouldnt fix anything.
In a way her harshness was good b/c it made me determined to find a solution and not accept her suggestion to take birth control and get a fake "period".
First I started accupuncture with a fertility specialist who suggested 1 get treatments weekly and take herbal supplements, called "womens precious formula".
Then I had 4 servings of full fat dairy a week, and against my better judgement ate 1 piece of red meat once a week.  I didnt worry so much about weight #'s or BMI, just ate normal meals, of mostly warm food (accupuncturist recommended it)
You mentioned nuts, oils and avocado, which are great healthy fats but honestly I have to say the dairy fat and red meat made more of a difference (I was a vegetarian during my restrictive phase so this kind of sucked but health was my top priority)
I know yours is exercise induced so obviously limiting the exercise is importaint too and yes yoga is great to help increase blood flow to your reproductive organs.

Anyway not to get off track or write a novel, in April 2010 I had my first period in 3 years, and have continued to have them since, I stopped accupuncture in May, after I felt I got my body back in rythem.

So I know its hard to hear be patient and it will come but it really will, I mean mine took 3 years!
If you want to talk more about anything feel free to message me whenver!
Good luck in your quest for health! You can do it! :)

XOXO

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
