Did someone really trade an orange for an oatmeal cookie? I want whomever ended up with the cookie negotiating my next employment contract.

I can negotiate oatmeal cookies.  Employment contracts, not so much.

Who wants a nice navel orange?

I already had one, tasted like a grapefruit. ewww

You probably had a seville orange.

I'm not sure but it was nastay!

That happened to me on my bike one time.  I discovered an orange tree, so I picked an orange and then I peeled it and started to eat it.  Bitter, bitter, bitter!  Found out later they're seville oranges that grow wildly throughout rural parts of Florida.  The good oranges are in groves.

I wish I could get seville oranges so I could make real marmalade.

We have those along a couple of our bike trails here.

I really do think the more families that can get by on a single income, the better off the economy will be in the long run. I realize that ideal doesn't necessarily apply in your case LooLoo, but I like it that more and more families are trying to make single income living work.

It's funny you mention that, because I was just thinking about that the other day.  I've noticed that people are finding themselves trying to push in a more old-fashioned direction, as though we're coming full circle.  Marriage, one-income households, white picket fences, all that.  It's idealistic, and...cute.  You're thinking any edition now, The Good Wife's Guide will make its return to the magazine racks.

Then reality sets in.   Economically, we're less prepared than ever to move in that direction.  Two, and sometimes three-, and four-income, multi-generational households are becoming commonplace.

It's a dichotomy that I find kind of fascinating.  I, for one, am extremely interested in how the complexion of America will be in 10 years.  Assuming, of course, the 2012 people are wrong!

Thank goodness that we do not have to have a multi-generational household.  It would never work.  Our families need to stay in their homes, and we will stay in ours, thank you very much!  We visit and what not, but live together?  No way in hell!

I lived in a multi-generation household myself.  Then I turned 21, and got out.  I value my independence.  But, for some, independence is a luxury that can't be afforded.  I hope myself or any of my family are never in that boat.

janeslovesjam sorry to hear that.  I agree cars might be the worst part of cycling.  I feel fortunate to live in a community that's big enough to support a nice set of rec trails, and an increasing number of bike lanes; but small enough that I can quickly get out of town and bike away from traffic.

There's no question, cars are absolutely the worst part of cycling.  And by cars, I mean methed-out rednecks in F-series pickup trucks.  Other than that, I rarely run into problems.

We, too, have some nice rec trails and more and more roads are equipped with bike lanes.

I'm also kind of on the edge of the city.  Ten minutes either way, I'm either in the sticks or in Tampa proper.

I wanted to address car doors.  Always ride more distant from a car than the swing of the door.  Always.  I see people all the time, sometimes bicycle commuters I see regularly, will ride barely 4-5 inches from a car's side-view mirror.  They're just asking to get doored.  Sometimes you'll need to wait for traffic to clear to make safe passage, or even get up on the sidewalk for a block or two.  I'm not on of these anti-sidewalk-at-all-costs bicyclists.  Even though I prefer to stay off of sidewalks, they have their place in situations here and there.

I'll probably be the only one to promote it, but it's what I did in college so - ROWING!

Rowing looks to be very good for cardio.  I see a lot of that living not far from the University of Tampa and their rowing team being a frequent fixture on the river and upper part of Hillsborough Bay.

That's a good question.  I don't know why everyone isn't doing this.  It's been the key for me losing 60 pounds.  I started out riding 5 miles or so at a time, then gradually took longer and longer rides.  I now regularly do rides from 25-35 miles, and will do longer rides as soon as I am able to upgrade my bike to a more road-friendly model.

I feel the same way on the bike.  It feels great to be out there, hearing the birds, being in the open air, getting to see things you would never see in a car (deer, alligators, rabbits, snakes, wild turkeys, many other birds), and most importantly, burning calories.

I'm looking into touring eventually as soon as my situation better permits me to do so.

If you can balance on a bike, there's some sort of riding out there for practically everyone who's in reasonable health.  Long-distance road riding, mountain biking, paved trail riding, beach riding, even riding the streets in your neighborhood just fast enough to get your blood flowing.

I recommend it to anyone who asks.

3 DIY Tortilla Tricks
I love Mexican food—tacos with crispy shells, crunchy taco bowls and salty tortilla chips. But I could do without the extra calories, fat and sodium in the salty, often deep-fried tortillas served at many restaurants or the less-than-healthy packaged versions of these foods sold in the supermarket.
