Interesting Info I Have osteoporosis since my early 20's due to Anorexia. I have been on Hrt and the mini pill, calcium supplements and vit D. My T-scores are -4. something in my hip and spine. My bone specialst was so concerned with these scores and at 35 yrs of age put me on Foreto injections for 18 months as i was not allowed to take any other bone strenghting drugs because of my age, a blessing in disguise as i did alot of research on the above drugs-scary. I know Foreto is also a high risk drug but i felt i had no choice.......But i did, if i had to get my weight up and start mensturating again that would have been the best Drug for my bones. Estrogen is just as important for bone formation as calcium/magnesium is. I am now mensturating again, the last 9 months after 20 yrs of no period, got my bmi up to 21, I am 38.... The last year i have been taking a calcium supplement/ strontium supplement called Algecal, i it is a plant source of calcium. I am due a dexa scan soon, havnt had one in nearly 2 yrs. Afc82 are you mensturating?? if not you need to gain weight to get to bmi 20/21 to regain your period, once you get it back you can reverse alot of the damage to your bones even at 30, it can take up to 7yrs to reverse damage.( before you hit the menopause) I know this might sound Harsh but that is the grim reality of it, you are setting yourself up for a debilitating/painful future possibly having to take to a wheel chair to get around if you keep on the path you are on. I am speaking from experience. I urge you to embrase recovery, it is so worth it. Best wishes.... Sandy |

Hi lovespell, just be patient you seem to be doing all the right things, NO EXCERISE, and plenty of fats, keep up the good work it might take your body some time to trust you. You dont state your current BMI, or how long you have been eating recovery ammounts??? so its hard to know but everybody is different. I got mine back after 20yrs absence, had to get to bmi of 20/21, eating plenty of fats and gave up the excerise. Sandy

My Dr put me on the pill and Hrt for several years during severe anorexia, as this provides the body with some form of estrogen and progestrone and is susposed to slow or prevent futher bone lost. My T-scores were -4. something in the hip and spine and there was no sign of me gaining weight or recovering. I also took a daily injection of Foreto for 1.5 yrs as bone specialist was so concerned about my T-scores. Only last year after finally get my weight up to healthy bmi of 21, my period returned (after 20 yrs of no period) and am now back producing my own hormones and off all medications. I know there is side effects to these medications but would my bones have worsened if i didnt take them, i dont know. Definately the answer is to return to a healthy weight and your hormone levels will return to pre ED levels. It will also take your body up to 7 yrs to repair any bone loss provided there is no relapse and maintain the healthy weight of at least bmi 21. Hope this helps??? Sandy |

Girl 800 cals is a starvation diet, you are not going to gain weight or get healthy eating this amount. You tell yourself u are not hungry as u are so disconected from ur hunger signals as u have become so used to ignoring them. You will have to eat at first to a clock, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack eating every 2-3 hrs. Did you put butter on your toast, it would add another 100-150cals. Why only egg white the yellow is full of omega oils if u buy free range and this will help u get your period back, fats are v important for this, and the yellow tastes good too. Try one whole egg to start off with, i make myself an omlette with 2 whole eggs and one extra white with onions garlic etc. Lunch looks pretty small to i usually have 600-800 cals alone for dinner. If your snacking on carrot sticks dip them in peanut butter weird but wonderful combo, or cream cheese. Your servings are v small 30gram of brown rice is not a serving 60 grams at least is a proper serving. The weight gain thread over in the weight gain forum is brillent for ideas on what others trying to gain weight are eating, please go visit it. It would be advisable for you to count for a few weeks till you get to 3000 cals which is what you should be eating as a minimum, by then you should have a better idea of portion size etc and be able to eat without measuring. PLEASE GET YOUR CALORIES UP YOU CAN DO THIS |

I understand exaclty how you feel and about the voices too, but you have to challenge them, answer them back, i do need this food i'm 15, my body is still developing and growing, and it need food to get healthy and stay healthy etc. I try not to use negative language like, I'm going to get fat if i eat this, i say i'm going to get healthy if i eat this and that where i want to be. Its a daily battle fighting and arguing with the voices but if you keep doing it, it will get easier and i can promise you the voices do lessen when you get to a healthier bmi. I also kept telling myself i wanted curves, a womans shape, instead of seeing weight gain just getting fat. Keep plugging away the fact that you even recognise that you want to gain weight is brillent!!

I was a a bmi of 18.5 for 2 yrs and was always tired, was also on iron tabs for anemia. Its was only when i gained to a bmi of 21 that i began to feel more alive, energised and proper healthy. I think your bmi could have alot to do with your lack of energy as an 18 yr old you need to be eating 3000 + calories every day in recovery at a minimum. your body has alot of repair to do and is still developing and growing on top of this. I advise you get to a bmi of at least 20-21 and see if this helps.

Jsw83 Recovery is not easy, its the hardest thing any of us will prob ever have to do in life. I just wanted to tell you to stick with it, keep pushing on, fight the irrational thoughts and behaviours and see them for what they are - Anorexia trying to take control of you. The real you does not want to be like this for the rest of your life. It has taken me 9 yrs to recover from a bmi of 12 to 21.5 with very little ED thoughts and behaviours now, and regained my period after 19 yrs without it. My parents too are divorced and it was a messy one too, their disordered relationship had alot to do with my ED, a way of controlling my out of control home life and me punishing myself for not been reason enough for them to stay together. Life can be so tough, but you are your own person and what ever they are going through now you have to look after yourself, easier said than done i know. Therapy or a really good friend who you could confide in now for support would be good. It is Anorexia that is making you unhappy, you will find happiness when you are free from it and get to full recovery I PROMISE YOU THIS. Keep pushing forward. Sandy xxx |

My guess and its only a guess is, if you are doing relatively high activity levels(which is another form of restriction) you are keeping your metabolism surpressed so i dont think your metabolism could be in a hypermetabolic state, with such activity. |

I had such a long post wrote to u and it got deleted on me, i so hate that!!! Weight gain is weight gain it will all come on the same no matter what foods you eat, when you get to a healthy bmi you can start doing weight training to build muscle and tone. I started on the rd to recovery 8-9 yrs ago, i had anorexic for 10 yrs previous to this, as low as bmi of 12. It has taken me 9 yrs to gain from bmi 12 to bmi 21.5. I wasted 20 yrs of the best years of my life to this illness, and missed out on so much, dating boys, getting married, having children and good health, dont let it happen to you. You are only 15, having the perfect body will not find you happiness, right now you need to gain weight, your body still has alot of developing to do and you need to fuel your body with alot more substantial foods than you are eating now, have you got your period??? Life is too short, just let go and embrase recovery..... Sandy xxx

OMG i never counted calories or weighted food all the 20 years of my ED, when i came on this site and realised i wasnt eating enough to put on weight etc, i counted and weighed food for 2 weeks to make sure i was eating enough and to see visually weight of proper portion size's. I could never keep that up it was sooo obessive and time consuming!!! I just eat many substantial foods that are high in calories and fats, and eat what my body is craving be it something sweet or savory. Full fat foods taste so much better i was terrified in the begining eating these food but now i eat them all the time and my weight has stabilised, i eat lots of nuts, nut butters, choclate, salmon, whole eggs, cheese's,chicken with real mayo, etc every thing in moderation!! Fats are very important for most functions in the body. Good luck with recovery sandy xxx |

Ivgrl, This is such an inspiring thread, i am so delighted for you!! i love your new profile pic by the way, you look Fantastic. I am at bmi 21 at the moment and 99% of the time i love my new figure, i look so healthy and i love my curves and womanly shape. The other 1% i think all women feel unhappy with the way they look its normal i think occasionally. I also have no fear foods anymore, i eat most things and cant restrict anymore and dont want to. I'm really enjoying life at the moment, i wish i had woken up from my bad dream sooner, like years ago!!! Wishing you all the best for the future xxx |

I just wrote a really long reply and my internet connection dropped... sooo annoying I hope i didn't come accross as telling you to just "snap out of it" thats just impossible. If i did'nt go to my Dr who then referred me to an inpatient programme i would'nt be hear today, i'd be dead and that the truth of it. I became anorexic at 17 only went to my Dr for help at 28, now 37 and 2011 is the futherest ive been in recovery at bmi of 21, so i didnt snap out of it, it took me 9 years of inpatient and outpatient programmes to get here. I owe alot to this site also, i have learnt so much from Hedgrens journals and posts it has given me the power and confidence to finish recovery. You really need professional help, be it in hospital, or on an outpatients programme, you cant do this alone. The first big step is to go to your DR or if you know a dr in your area who specialises in ED. At 21 you are still very young, you have a very supportive mum, you are her baby and she can't stand by watching you kill yourself. YOUR ED MINDSET CAN BE CHANGED, its not going to be easy it will take alot of blood, sweat and tears, but you can't live in the hell hole of anorexic forever. You can do this, be brave and strong and take that first step of seeing a DR. xxx

Hi Kelsey, Judging by your photo you look very underweight and young teen. I totally agree with all puddycat has said. At least you know you need outside help admitting that alone is a big step, now next step is to go to your dr, maybe a friend or family member can go with you or make the app for you, give you that little push. Being on birth control will give you a false period it is prob not your own cycle, it is only masking the problem The longer you leave it to get help the more harm you are doing to your body, mind and life. I know what im talking about ive struggled with ED's for 20 years, it has left a trail of physical damage on my body, robbed me of having a proper/fulfilling life (im 37, not married and have no children and prob will never be able to have children). Go get help now while you still are young and get on with living a normal healthy, fulfilling life, you deserve it, dont let ED take another day away from you. xxx
