Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids. This is important if you are getting sick.

Sassy - I would be sooo excited to see 190 on the scale again. The last time I saw that number was watching it go by when I was pregnant with my oldest child (he just turned 20). It's all in the perspective I guess. As for my "Ah-Ha" moment, there were a couple of really big factors and many, many smaller ones. The two major ones were: 1.) I could not stand in a grocery store line-more than 2 deep- without being in crippling pain. It was ridiculous! 2.) My ex-husband, his girlfriend, and 6 month old daughter moved in with me (I know, I know, but it's a long story) and it flat exhausted me trying to help take care of the baby - it occurred to me that my kids were getting old enough that they would be starting families in the next few years and I want to be able to enjoy them. Some of the small things included not fitting in movie theater seats (or the auditorium seats at my son's graduation) not being able to sit cross legged, getting out of the bathtub where the water had come half way up my stomach to discover there was really only about 6 inches (I was displacing it that much), not being able to buckle my own shoes, and a myriad of other things that we normally take for granted. So, in October 2009 I embarked on a journey to change all of that and between then and July 2010 I lost 105 pounds. Then I took a deliberate break both to practice maintenance skills and to give my body a break in order to accept the new weight as normal. In Feb. I went back to serious counting, etc and have lost the 3 pounds I gained back and an additional 5. I have another 70ish to go in order to be at a completely healthy weight. Blessings on the journey to a new and healthier you, Sunni |

When looking for a quick and easy way to season home cooked food without any added sodium Mrs. Dash products are a lifesaver. There are 8 - 9 spice blends and 3 - 4 marinades and none of them have any sodium. Blessings, Sunni |

Bearybear - I see two things that you might want to look at - your carbs look great but I would try and reverse the protein and fat figures. Most of us try and get more of our calories from proteins than from fats. The second is your sodium intake - the recommended maximum is for 2400mg a day. Mine usually runs a little bit higher than that, but I also don't usually have a water retention problem. If you are retaining water you will definitely want to bring it down. In the meantime, make sure you are drinking plenty of water to flush the excess out of your system. I love Subway - filling and if you do it right very low fat and calories. It is the only fast food I eat anymore. So far so good! Blessings, Sunni |

| Weight Loss | Has anyone ever pressured you into losing weight? | Feb 12 2010 00:18 (UTC) |

If you have been with him for four years - this means through the last loss and the regaining. This throws up the biggest red flag for me. Why were you unable to maintain your weight? Did you lose it the first time around to please him as well or was it so that you could be at your best? If it was the first, this probably has a lot to do with why you didn't keep it off. How is your relationship otherwise? Is he critical of you in other areas as well? Is he an overly controlling person? When you think about the answer to this question don't just consider overt controlling methods but the subtle, insidious ones as well. For example - when was the last time you went and did something with a friend or family member without him? Does he make comments about how you could improve your wardrobe, haircut, cooking, house keeping, etc.? If so these are all signs that this is not a healthy relationship and could be leading to your overeating and thus gaining weight. (It would be a sub conscious desire to maintain control over something) Even if this is not the problem (and since I don't know you, you will have to decide if it is) you should not ever undertake a commitment of this level to please someone else. Sure you can lose weight, but then what? You have to want this for YOURSELF - YOUR health - YOUR self confidence - etc. Only then will you be able to maintain what you lose. Finally, I know you most likely DO LOVE HIM - but making a comment like that doesn't make him sound like he really loves YOU! It makes it sound like to him what you look like is more important that how you treat him, your intelligence, your talents, etc. All of which are the same no matter WHAT SIZE YOU ARE! Sometimes honey, love just isn't enough! You are the only one who can decide what is best for you, but I beg you to take an honest look at the rest of your relationship and make the decisions with your eyes wide open. Blessings to you, Sunni |

There are two very significant things that made me decide once and for all that all this excess weight has to go and stay gone. 1. When I realized that people had simply stopped asking me to join them for anything that involved physical activity. I was capable of doing a lot, maybe a little slower, but everyone took one look at my size and didn't even bother to find out. This pissed me off, but was also an eye opener. 2. My oldest child graduated from high school last spring. I realized then that he would probably be starting a family of his own in the next few years. I want to enjoy my grandchildren when they come along. I discovered how unprepared I was physically for this when I had a young couple and their infant daughter living with me for a couple of months last fall. This was the driving impetus to my getting control of this issue in my life. There are dozens of mini reasons, but these are the two big ones. I am already reaping tons of benefits as well. Some of them expected, some of them not - but I will take it. Blessings, Sunni |

| Foods | What's in your salad! | Feb 11 2010 19:56 (UTC) |

I make a fairly regular tossed salad (mixed greens - including raw spinach - carrots, celery, radishes, broccoli, etc.) but instead of dressing I will use a 1/4 to 1/2 cup cottage cheese (depending on how much salad I put on my plate) and salsa on top. The cottage cheese adds protein and the salsa is very low calorie way to add a bunch of flavor. (Most salsas are 10 calories for a 2T serving thus a 1/2 cup is only 40 calories) If there are beets on the salad bar I will skip the salsa and just put a few beets on top of the cottage cheese. I'm not anywhere as tall as you gals (I come in at 5'7") but I can certainly sympathize. I have lost 45 pounds and have only changed my pants size by one and that was because it had only been when I gained the last 10 pounds that I had had to go up again. Sunni |

You also have to keep in mind that when CC adds any activity to your burn meter it subtracts out what you would have burned during that same time period if you weren't exercising as it has already accounted for that amount. |

Many schools of thought on this one. Some say that food you eat close to when you go to bed does not burn off as well as food you eat earlier in the day. Others say that you are better off saving calories for a later/bigger dinner to avoid the mindless snacking that many of us indulge in during the evening hours. I personally am like you and want to have enough calories left at the end of the day to feel like I have really eaten dinner. If my dinner only consists of 400 - 500ish calories then I feel deprived and find myself with my head stuck in the fridge looking for something else to eat. I say it is a matter of listening to your body, if you don't feel hungry all day and overeat at night then no harm no foul. If you are losing weight at a slow but steady pace with this eating pattern again no harm no foul! Blessings to you on your journey to a new and healthier you. Sunni |

I like Newman's Own Lighten Up Sesame Ginger & Berinstiens (spelling is bad) makes a low cal version of their Cheese Fantastico that I really love. I will also just use salsa on my salads sometimes as well. For a half cup there is only 40 calories. I have also just used a half cup of a low fat cottage cheese as well. (This works really well if you have cold beets in the salad) If you use a full calorie dressing - dip your fork in dressing and then take a bite - you get the flavor and don't use very much in the end. Hope this helps, Blessings to you on your journey to a new and healthier you. Sunni |

Ask for a nutritional guide - they might have one. (Some local restaurants do and some don't) Your friends might think you're crazy but so what? Eat a very small amount of the chips (with a whole bunch of salsa) they bring out before hand. Drink lots of water, ice tea, or diet soda before and during the meal! Unfortunately at this point - no margaritas! (LOL - if that was ever your thing) Consider holding the melted cheese on top, and whatever you decide on ask for the take out box up front and take home half for lunch or dinner tomorrow! Finally, if you can eat what you get and stay at or under your burn amount for the day - then enjoy! If you don't go over your burn - you do NOT contribute to weight gain in any way. Warning though if you weigh everyday you might experience some fluctuation on the scale in the morning due to sodium intake. (Most restaurant food is high in sodium - they can't seem to help it) Have fun!!!!! Sunni |

I too use salsa on a lot of things. Have you ever tried it on just a plain green salad? I often use it instead of salad dressing - most brands are about 10 calories to the serving (usually 2 Tablespoons) so 1/2 cup is only 40 calories. This is way more topping than using dressing (even the low calorie stuff at 25 -35 cal. per 2T) there is some bulk added to. Another thing I have discovered is whipped cream cheese. A 2T serving is only 60 calories (this is for the regular version - a reduced fat version still has this many calories and doesn't taste as good) and I only need half a serving on an English muffin. My final bad habit that I have turned into a positive is the whole eating at the computer. They say it is a bad thing, because eating becomes mindless - for me it forces me to slow down. If I bring my food to the computer and only take a bite or two during natural breaks in a game or after reading and responding to a post, etc. a meal that would normally only take me 5 minutes to consume - now takes closer to 1/2 hour. I still insist on dinner at the table (the value of the time spent with my kids is insurmountable - it gives me a chance to check in with my very active teenagers at least once a day) I just have to work harder at slowing down. Blessings, Sunni |

Holly - the name of the game is consistency. If you step on the scale leaning over so you can actually see what it says 3 times in a row what is the variance. If it is minimal then just step on the scale the same way every time. This will give you an accurate measure of how much you are losing - even if the number is not the same as say your doctor's scale. If the variance is too much (when you stand on it the same way) then it is time to get a new scale. Sunni |

Are you close enough to take her on fun outings that will help her get in that extra activity she needs? If she sees you eating an apple - will she want one too? Model good habits for her - you probably have more influence than her parents do. Can her parents get a new pediatrician? The doctor should be being very clear on what she needs nutritionally to develop correctly. I hate it when professionals tell you that something needs to be done and then leave it to you to figure out how. This is what we pay them for! Good luck! Sunni |
