Wow Devious what a great article!!! Not just for young women, but for all women. I often have been angry at societie's expectation of being slim. However I am just as guilty at judging myself by those same standards and complimenting others on their weight loss instead of looking healthier. While I am not attempting to be super skinny, I am still inflluenced by the media, so sad.

I'm not sure I was ever a 0 I was a 3 once many many years ago and I am only 5 feet tall. at 108 I look like a sick cow, all hips and concave stomach...........not attractive at all.  My husband actually doesnt want me to go under 130 and that is still considered overweight for my height.

Anyway, life is not about a size, it is about being happy and a size cannot make you happy.

Hi Rvince, I agree a regular multi-vitamin can be very helpful. I have been at this for over a year now and have lost 30lbs..........actually I had lost 40 but gained 10 back grrr, It is a setback, but here I am again...

as far as advice I would say to find something active you love to do. For me it is swimming, but it can be anything. If you love to do it, it stops being excercise and becomes recreation. So join some of the classes at your gym, you may be suprised what you find fun!

setbacks can be overcome, if you are bad for a day or a week (or 6 months in my case Frown), that doesnt mean you have failed, just pick it up where you left off and keep going.

I also was (and still am a bit) self concious in the gym, and in the pool there is no hiding anything, but it is getting easier and I can say that the others are right, if anyone does "notice" you, it would probably be complimentary on your efforts.

Also, I agree with the others on 2 other points, make sure you eat enough and go down gradually, and dont burn yourself out by making too many lifestyle changes at once. One thing that helped me is to choose certain items to take out of my diet, and I would make better choices. You can also compromise for things you just dont feel you can give up. I will not give up my real butter, however, I have switched to "whipped butter" which goes further for fewer calories. It is always better to choose moderation over absolute denial. (at least where food is concerned)  Ask people what sort of substitutes they use in place of high fat or high sugar foods and everyone will be more than happy to share their substitutes.

know the feeling.........I work out in the evenings because I cant seem to get my but up except on weekends.........Weekends I'm up between 6:30 and 7 on my own and rearing to go, I'm done with my workout by 9........weekdays I could hit the snooze a million times. I started swimming for my excercise since it is hotter than Hades right now. I love to swim, so now it isnt just excercise, it's fun. I keep trying to get up and swim........but so far its been a no go. Maybe tomorrow...........

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the encouragement!!! Yes I always have yogurt or half a peanut butter sandwich after I work out. I also usually time a light snack about 30 minutes before I workout too. I also water with me and drink it during my swim. I was worried that I was not eating enough, but like I said, I am only 5 feet tall (4'11.5" actually Smile) and have had issues because my burn rate is lower than most. I have given myself an off "diet" day. I had two slices of pizza at the Mellow Mushroom (I think they put heroin or something in their pizza because it is soooo amazing) we also stopped at coldstone creamery this afternoon.............(it really was very hot today, over 100) and I had a frozen yogurt (small). I worked out an hour and 15 minutes this morning so I feel like I got my burn meeter off to a good start today.

Anyway, thanks for your words of encouragement.

I joined a health club today to use their pool. I was getting frustrated trying to swim around teenagers and toddlers.....and dodging storms... A girl I work with joined today too, she is also a swimmer.

I have never been to Savanah, I have been meaning to go but you know how it is............busy busy busy.

Ya know, I have always thought it funny about other countries, I have been chastised for this countries politics, like I had Bush's ear or something, yeah he sure was listening to me! NOT America's politics havent been so popular in the past several years. It is just plain ignorant to blame or fault another person for the faults of  their government.......especially a country such as Russia or China where the people have not a lot of say in what happens. Even in this country we elect people we think will do a good job, but things dont always turn out the way we hoped. I really believe that  we are all so much alike really.

I am off to bed, I am really wooped!

Hi All, I droped off for a couple of days........... I came home from work early yesterday and went straight to bed...........I was sooooo tired..........I get that way at that time of the month..........I always feel like I can barely lift my head........ I didnt swim yesterday, but since all I did was sleep.......I didnt eat either!! LOL Anyway, today was much better. I swam for about an hour and 15 min. I had to wait for a storm to pass to swim, I hate that!!! I have kept my caloric intake about 1000 calories below my burn rate........so we will see how that works this week. According to my calculations, if I can keep the excercise up, I can eat about 1500 to 1800 calories and still loose 2 lbs a week.

My anniversery is Thursday! I cant believe we have been married 5 years already.............time flies doesnt it? I think we are going to Savanah for the weekend. I'm not sure though, my husband is planning something but I think he wants to surprise me. Well, I'm off... Welcome to all the newcomers and I wish you the best of luck!!!

Fitness Working out in the morning vs. the evening? Jun 15 2009

For me, I work out whenever I can. I have started swimming again, so basically whenever I can get in the water I do. Sometimes several times a day. I work out both mornings AND evenings on weekends and usually evenings most other days. I would like to switch over to mornings during the week, but that has more to do with thunderstorms picking up in the afternoon and ruining my ability to swim than any consideration to calorie burns. Either way I feel great when I'm done, I love my workouts and miss them terribly if I cant swim at least once a day. I hate gyms, so my entire workout is swimming (with stretching of course), especially since I live in the deep south and running in 95 degree weather with 90% humidity is insane (although this is probably just a cop out for me since I hate to run anyway Wink) With all this said, work out whenever you can and find something you love to do. Swimming IS my recreation as well as my excercise...........what could be better?

Hi All! Well I'm off and running this morning, got up at 7 and swam 1,ooo meters............took 50 minutes to do it.........I wont be threatening Michael Phelps for a bit but hey, that was better than thinking I was going to die with one lap! I live in Charleston SC so I feel your pain! I think if you cant walk ten feet without drowning in a puddle of your own sweat, you probably shouldnt be running...but hey, that's just me, to each their own! You are welcome to make the drive and swim with me, 90 degrees is a bummer, it was 95 with about 80% humidity here yesterday........the water feels sooooo good, come on over :) .

I also had a ton of ear infections, tubes, repaired eardrum, reformed bones, and removal of a mastoid bone..........over about 25 years........my ears suck! But I have found if I take care and get the silicone forming kind of plugs that works well. they dont hurt like other ones do.

Lynn, dont be too hard on yourself. Ever thought of taking up kick ? No kidding my sister uses that when she gets really ticked off to burn off her anger. She says it works good at calming her down.

Peace All! chat at ya later!

Thanks Lynhaslost.........I appreciate the welcome!!! I wish you luck with the Ali, I actually bought some myself months ago, but I'm not that good at being consistent with taking a pill, it may have even worked for me.........but I think you actually have to take it regularly! LOL

Minda, you crack me up, I actually enjoy your rants......LOL I feel the same way, I think one of the reasons I have not been on this site in months is because of some ninny that chastised me for eating sugar free pudding.......because that is bad food ya know??? Bite me.......Anyway, I am enjoying the posts here. I will pledge right here never to chastise you for anything!

I did get my swim Friday night........it was so nice, and I even got up to swim this morning. I have to quit getting on the scale myself.......I actually gained a half lb this week, and this is with all my swimming and I have been sooooo good. Oh well, it's like you said Minda..........I am gaining muscle and my clothes dont fit tighter so I'm probably just fine. I cant even tell you how much I enjoy my swimms.......I am a bit worried about my ears though. My right ear has had several surgeries so I am trying really hard to keep the water out, but it is tougher to do than I thought it would be.

I was good today, I did go to cracker barrel for breakfast but ate off the kids menu. I was even full afterwards!!

I am off and running........so everyone have fun and keep your faith!!

My husband and I both have vibram's They are great on the beach especially. My husband has arch problems and he loves his and they even seem to be helping correct his foot problems. I'm a barefootin girl so I took to them pretty quick. We do get weird looks from some, and questions from others.........but honestly.........these are best shoes in the world in my opinion, I read some articles recently on them and actually they are finding you run more efficiently barefoot than in tennis shoes.........those that run in them say they love them. I'm not a runner, but I will tell you I can walk all day long in them and not get tired.......

Hi all, I love the idea of no deadlines. I have been loosing weight for over a year, fell off the wagon around christmas........gained 10lbs back UGH! So here I am again, I have another 35lbs to go.

My wake up call was all my illnesses.....acid reflux, gallstones, other stomach issues........I would wake up in pain.......excruciating and that is if I even could sleep because the acid in my stomach would make me violently ill. Anyway, surgery was mentioned but the doctor said he wouldnt operate because I was obese!! OMG!!! I cried and cried.......of course he was right, but I was miserable.

I lost 45, have gained 10 back and now am trying another strategy........enjoying myself!

I am counting my calories, and weighing in, but I have rediscovered an old love which is swimming!

Well, my old coach would be rolling in his grave if he saw me swim right now (I can even hear his voice in my head) but I am just going to work with it.

My biggest problem is that I am only 4'11" tall...........go ahead and check out what my caloric intake should be just to maintain at 130............which is still considered overweight for me, oh joy. So basically the only way I can loose the weight and keep it off is by finding an excercise I love and so I can eat more than 1200 calories a day and still loose weight. I am shooting for swimming daily for an hour which is more of a treat than excercise.

Right now though I am sitting on my couch, typing and feeling sorry for myself, I sat out side my pool for an hour tonight praying the lightening would stop so I could swim........it's now 10 and I have given up...........I am so bummed. I know I could probably do something else for the excercise, but I hate almost everything else (I'm in Charleston SC and it is summer so downhill skiing is out). I actually loathe working out on equipment, excercising indoors always seemed unnatural to me. I have tried it, even tried to love it and psych myseslf into thinking I'm having a good time, but I cannot maintain it more than 2 months. I wish I could enjoy it like one of my sisters does.........sigh.........anyway my strategy is just to get active doing things I love love love.......Well, keep your fingers crossed there are no storms tomorrow......

I'm with everyone else............why do anything but swim? I used to swim a lot when I was younger, I dont even know why I got away from it other than access to a pool. I just started swimming again a few days ago, since I have a pool right down the street. I LOVE IT.........why did I ever stop........I get tired, but it is a good tired, my arms hurt....(breast stroke.............sheesh I'm out of shape!) but even so..........it seems almost effortless for me...........even when I know I am working my but off.........it is amazing how much more effort you are willing to put into a thing when you love it! I'm with you Qualquun, I have found my exercise........it works every muscle in my body, burns more and I feel good when I get out of the pool..........outside swimmers hair there is no down side!! Go swimmers!!!

I'm heading back to our house in NC to vote, do some work on our house and pick up my daughter for her birthday and bring her to Charleston for a few days. It's a 5-6 hour drive...YUCK!! Anyway, normally I would have rushed out of here, not eaten breakfast, stopped at fast food along the way, etc.... Not good. I'm leaving in a couple of hours, I am getting my breakfast as I type and I'm bringing a roast pork sandwich (left overs from the other night) some graham crackers, a tangerine and an apple (hmmmm, maybe one small piece of dark chocolate later for a reward). I do plan on stopping for something to eat tonight, but having food in the car will prevent me from just stopping anywhere because I'm STARVING. I'm one of those that goes from not hungry to starving, cranky and headachey in minutes. Soooo I'm preparing!!

I wont be able to log in for the next couple of days, so I am hoping the eating habits I have developed over the last several months will keep me from slipping back to bad food. I've already experienced how nasty some of my old favorites taste to me now, so I'm not as inclined to stop for fast food (greasy with an icky aftertaste, bleh) Unfortunately there isnt a whole lot of decent places to stop between here and Eden (not much of a selection when I get there either). So, wish me luck to avoid the chicken fingers at our old favorite place to eat! Southern fried food is NOT condusive to weight loss!!!!

Weight Loss What made you WANT to lose weight ? Nov 02 2008

There were so many reasons to loose weight, yet I seemed to ignore them all for a long time. My health was poor, I had acid reflux really bad, my knees hurt, my legs got tired simply walking up stairs. My doctors told me I had to loose 20lbs just to have surgery to help my acid reflux. My husband insisted he loved me as I was, but I didnt feel attractive anymore either....so, I finally put my foot down and decided I would do something about it instead of half heartedly blaming my genes or bad metablolism (because it couldnt have been my fault now could it??)....

I am more than halfway there now (yay me), my knees no longer hurt, I dont get tired going up stairs (okay maybe if it is a lot of stairs) AND my acid reflux is gone. I am finally begining to feel attractive again so that just provides even more motivation.

I know what you mean mrsmao! My husband used to eat whatever, but he would at least ask if I had a problem with it. He started to loose weight because I was the one who did the grocery shopping and I quit buying the junk. He would buy his own goodies, but now, he has also joined CC to try and loose 20lbs. But, before I just reminded myself what I was doing for myself. He had to make his own choices, and just because he ate junk didnt mean that I needed to. I would just buy my replacement foods, until I got stronger, now I dont care if he sat down and ate a bowl of candy (well I would actually, but only because he would make himself sick and then I would have to take care of him) I just dont even want the junk anymore.
