Weight Gain Support in self-help. (Recovery of sorts.) May 23 2008

Lalabanana,

First of all, congratulations on helping yourself to becoming a healthy person. You'll get there sweetheart, just have patience and listen to the good people on this thread. We're all here to help you. Many have been where you are now and have recovered and are living their lives once again. Listen to them and take note of what they say. I am underweight but not due to anorexia. I had a lot of anxiety and stress and the weight just fell off. I looked awful. It's not nice, is it? I am putting it on again now and am happy to do so.

I am in the UK too and if you see your GP he is obliged to keep anything you tell him confidential. He will NOT tell you family. To do so would put his job at risk as he could be struck of the medical register. Go see him and explain what is happening. He can help, I am sure.

Meanwhile, keep posting here and letting us know how you're doing.

Love

Can you afford to buy some weight gain supplements? These will add lots of calories to your daily intake if you drink them as well as eating meals. If you're American you can get Ensure Plus. If you're in the UK then go for Weiders Weight Gain. You make it with milk into a shake and it's quite tasty.

Weight Gain strange? May 10 2008

The same thing is happening to me! It's really weird. I'm not anorexic but lost 14lbs due to stress three months ago. I am now packing in the calories as fast as I can as I need to gain this weight back having always been on the skinny side. My arms looks 'chunkier' but the scales still show 112lbs, no gain at all!

I have indeed lost a lot of muscle and am wondering if I could gain this back then the scales would show some difference. It's just so frustrating!

Tahiti,

The weight gain supplement is available in the UK. I don't know where you are though. If you're in the UK then you can buy it from Holland and Barratts health food stores. It's called Weider's Weight Gain and will provide around 380 calories when made with skimmed milk but around 500 when made with full cream milk. That's how I make it. A couple of those a day and you've already got 1,000 cals inside you without struggling to eat a big meal. I usually drink one with breakfast, another with lunch and one before going to bed.

I have had the same thing. I got a really bad virus in January of this year which wiped me out. After this I started suffered panic attacks and anxiety. I couldn't eat as my mouth felt so dry and my stomach heaved at the thought of food. Due to the anxiety I lost 14lbs in weight. As I have always been a skinny person this was the last thing I needed. It's not easy to put the weight back on again either. What I have found helpful is sipping supplements like weight gain shakes. We have Complan here in the UK or Weight Gain which make lovely milkshakes and if made with full milk can give you 500 calories per shake.

Hope you soon feel better,

Taffy.

Weight Gain wrong direction on the scale! (warning: this is a vent!) Apr 29 2008

The same thing happened to me. I really packed in the calories in order to gain weight but saw no difference on the scales. I was so disappointed. At one point, like you I even lost a couple of pounds. After two weeks of solid eating I had lost weight. I carried on though and upped my calorie intake even more by adding shakes like Weight Gain and Complan. I haven't weighed myself for a week now but my clothes feel tighter and don't hang on my bottom so much.

Hi Charlie!

Just wanted to say welcome to you. I'm in the UK too and although I've not suffered with an eating disorder I have lost a lot of weight due to suffering with anxiety. Now that I am on the mend I want to gain back the weight I lost but it really is a slow business.

Good luck!

Hi Amila!

Thank you so much for your very sound advice. Yes, I have lost a lot of muscle. I can tell as my legs and arms are 'flabby' where once there was muscle. I shall certainly start working out.

Thank again!

Hi Janrose,

Many thanks for your reply. I'm really grateful to you. I am  (whisper it!) fifty four years old and lost weight due to severe anxiety over the last three months. I am better now but would really like to put back on the weight that I lost. I am eating around 2,200 calories a day now and can feel my jeans tightening round the waist and hips, whereas before they just hung on me. I also need my belt on a lower notch now, so I must have gained something.

You could be right about the scales. I do use them in the bathroom where I have a vinyl floor but they're about 20 years old believe it or not! I must get some new ones soon!

Take careSmile

Thanks headingup

I'll try asking round the chemists and see if I can buy Ensure Plus. I lost weight due to anxiety and panic attacks not anorexia but understand how hard it must be for you. I'm so glad to hear that you're eating again. You really do need to gain some weight and I hope it is getting easier for you now. Let us know how you get on.

Wishing you well in your recovery,

Taffy

Hi Charlie

I've heard about Ensure and know it is available over the counter in the US but not here. I didn't know you could get it from your doctor though. I'm not seriously underweight (5' 6'' and 112lbs) so I doubt if he'd prescribe it for me. I lost weight due to suffering from anxiety and depression for a couple of month and now want to put it back on. It's not easy though as it seems such a slow process. I'll keep trying the milk shakes and see how it goes.

All the best,

Taffy

Oh wow dee, you've made me feel better already. I was so down at not gaining any weight even after stuffing myself with extra food but now I see that it can take a while for the weight to come on. I thought it was just me! It's such a relief to hear of others who have trouble gaining. I've always been slim, as a child I was so skinny I looked half starved, but as you get older you realise that being thin just makes you look drawn and is ageing. That's why I want to gain.

Thanks again dee for your help.

Thank you so much for those helpful links missmagill. And for your informative post. I used to walk about 3 miles per day before I became ill. Now though I am lucky if I manage one without feeling exhausted. I know I'm not seriously underweight, just thin, but I feel much better and have far more energy at a higher weight than I am at present.

I realise now that it will indeed take time to gain the extra weight so I'll take your good advice and try increasing my calorie intake every few days.

Thank you again missmagil :)

Thank you for your prompt reply, amila.

I suppose I'm expecting too much too soon. Overnight weight gain! I only started my high calorie diet yesterday after logging how much I eat every day. I was shocked to find I'd only been consuming around 800 to 1000 calories per day. I went out shopping and bought lots of high calorie foods like peanut butter, shakes and creamy yoghurts to snack on.

As I say, I only started this yesterday and expected to see the results this morning. When I put on my jeans I thought they may be a bit tighter and was disappointed when they were just as loose as before. Ridiculous, I know! Gaining weight isn't an overnight process.

I shall add another 500 calories to my diet and see how that goes.
