The Lounge why do people bake when they're trying to lose weight? Dec 23 2010

Baking and candy making are my creative outlets........I love to do it and I love to give it away. Since I started this journey I've baked very little and considered not making a thing this year for the holidays. A friend who has lost 130 pounds convinced me to give it a try. I've made cookies and three kinds of candy and have yet to have more than a nibble of one cookie and a caramel.

I've enjoyed the wonderful buttery smell in the house and the smiles on the recipients faces.

Baking is something I do very well & I like to share.........I'm not musical or artistic, I'm sorely lacking in the decorating dept. buut put me in a kitchen and I excel. Plus, I now know I can occasionally surprise someone with a treat or make cookies with my grand-kids and still keep the pounds off.

WEAR SHOES! It took me years of often painful treatment to finally get rid of the plantar warts I got on the bottom of my foot from using gym showers.. Just drying your feet well is not enough. Please, get yourself a pair of shower shoes.

Hi OGR,

I talked to my dad.......he said the feeling is pins and needles. It is pretty constant, but a bit worse in the evening. Walking does make the feeling worse not better. I think that's why he sticks to the stationary bike as his main form of exercise! Dad also experiences a feeling of coldness in his feet but his feet are warm to touch! He also reminded me that he has scoliosis as well as stenosis.

I hope you are able to figure out the cause of your neuropathy and good luck with the nerve conduction test.

Take care, Terry

My dad (78) has neuropathy in his feet and severe spinal stenosis. Poor guy leans slightly to the right when he walks. I believe his neurologist said it is lumbar disc compression. He is in otherwise excellent health....no diabetes etc. He walks daily and rides a stationary bike.....he does back strengthening exercises and stretches as well. He had a pretty severe weight problem until he was in his late 60's/early 70s and was sedentary. Half a Vicodin in the morning and sometimes the other half later in the day keep him moving.

Truly, I can't remember when my dad didn't have back problems but the weight loss and exercise seem to be keeping the problem from getting out of hand.

I hope you find out the cause of your problem.......it must be very frustrating.

Take care, Terry

I've had the problem all my life but it was much worse when I was younger. I am 54 now and the redness is not nearly as bad. Like amethystgirl, I use a mesh pouf and a good moisturizing lotion. The skin on my arms is soft for the first time in my life!

My mom always told me I had it because I was fat but both my daughters and one sister have it and they don't have a weight problem!

Fitness Should I Join My High School's Cross Country team? May 19 2010

Join the team!.......for all of the reasons Cherry  & Shane mentioned above!

My daughter joined her CC team as a freshman and ran all four years. The best friends she made in school were from the team.

Ten years later my daughter is still active and I believe the habits she learned being part of the cross country team are part of her success.

Join the team and have fun!

Welcome back! I lost 46 pounds in 2008, spent 2009 gaining exactly 46 pounds back and have lost 44 so far this year. I have at least another 60 to go. It is a constant struggle.......I read that every time you try to overcome a bad habit (overeating, smoking etc) you come a little closer to success. I guess it's like practice! Let's hope we will both be successful  this time around.  Take care, Terry

And I thought I was the only one who ate my cereal with yogurt! I like plain greek yogurt with fiber one cereal, slivered almonds and fresh fruit!

I rather like small spoons for eating anything indulgent....seems to make it last longer, I think.

As for the water....the colder the better for me.

Fitness 40s, fat, and training for a triathlon Apr 24 2010

Hi.....I have no personal experience but my sister did a similar triathlon two years ago at the age of 43. She joined a group called mom's in motion to train for it. Other than working out at the gym she was a non-athlete.  She did great! There were participants of all ages and fitness levels! I saw a child of eight and a woman who was almost 75. There were very fit 20 somethings and very overweight 40 somethings.....and everything in between. It was amazing to watch!

The swimming part of the Tri was in the ocean.......I know my sis met with the group to do ocean swims at least twice a week for a few months before. She ran and biked every weekend and a couple of times during the week.

I am so impressed that you want to do this! I still have another 60 pounds (at least) to lose and have lost 42 and am scared by even the thought. Keep eating right and training and you'll do great! Keep me posted .......I want to keep up with your progress!

Almost all of these look good........believe it or not a LITTLE bit...just a pinch of nutmeg in potatoes and some beef dishes adds so much flavor. The first time my mother in law suggested it I thought she was nuts.  Now I do it too. A little cocoa adds flavor to chili but you would never know you were tasting chocolate. I agree strawberries and balsamic are great.

Thanks, Arteokay for introducing me to a new site! It's great.

When someone asks how much I've lost etc. it's like I can see them adding pounds up to see if they can figure out just how fat I really was (-:

That one! I NEVER say how much I lost.

I ran into an old friend in a restaurant a couple of years ago. She had lost over 100 pounds and noticed I had lost a bit of weight too. She asked how much and I said "enough" she asked again and again, getting more upset each time I wouldn't tell her the exact amount. Her husband finally had to pull her out of the restaurant, apologizing over his shoulder as he went. It was one of the most uncomfortable moments I've ever had. My husband and kids were a little horrified........needless to say I haven't spoken to her since.
