Good to know. Some of this makes me feel less like beating myself up; however, some of it is too late for today (as in, eat breakfast and eat better/regular). It may be too late for that today. I didn't eat breakfast or lunch, opting only for dinner and not enjoying that either. Since I'm diabetic tho, and its hours past dinner, and I'm light on calories, I will go "enjoy" a Glucerna diabetic shake. The chocolate will thrill my taste buds and I'm thinking after this read that my body could use the calories and the protein. Thanks again. I felt miserable, cranky and like crying all day. I need to get over it. |

Kudos and a big pat on the back! Honestly, the BK stuff would have made you feel awful (would have stopped me from eating it, definitely), and Krispy Kremes I have never had one in my life. I guess I can't miss what I never had. Everyone you work with needs a reality check. LOL |

If you love yourself, feel your current stats are fine, are comfortable in the size of the clothes you wear and think you look good wearing them, have no health issues (yet -- but being heavy doesn't necessarily mean YOU will have health issues but statistically overweight people are at higher risk for certain conditions than normal weight people), enjoy being a couch potato and eating foods that will ensure that you remain a couch potato, are happy with your love life or lack thereof, then there is no point of losing weight for you. I don't like the size of me. I'm uncomfortable in my own skin. I would like a wider variety of clothing to choose from, dare I write at 52 I'd like to look more "stylish" and have more options available to me. Is it vanity? I don't know because I was truly uncomfortable, physically, at 200 pounds. Currently at 169, I'm still not completely thrilled with my body shape and the way clothing fits me. Sure, I can still wear most of the old stuff I have and its loose and baggy and I don't mind because it is a testament to my efforts and I don't have a lot of $ to spend on replacements....however, I have gone shopping and I would like to dress more trendy and after a few more pounds, and when my eyes/brain catch up to seeing me at THIS size, I will probably spend the $ to buy those new pieces that will showcase my weight loss efforts. It isn't all vanity, but vanity is a part of it. Passing by a mirror or store front window and seeing the reflection of a beached whale looking back at me is depressing. Now when I catch myself off guard in such moments my initial reaction is....wow, I really DID lose weight. I look....better....more normal....and...happier. |

| Weight Loss | Um.. how much do boobs weigh?! | Jan 29 2012 13:45 (UTC) |

This post seems to catch everyone's eye - well Bette Midler had a joke about her enormous boobs - and she said she went to the post office to weigh them. The punch line is: I wont tell you how much they weigh, but it costs $87.50 to ship them to Brazil. Third Class. I have had big boobs since I'm 13. It was wonderful - not - in 8th grade to be unofficially voted the girl with the biggest boobs. Come to think of it, back then at 106 lbs, they were merely a B cup. As I got older and womanly, they are a D. Depending on the bra manufacturer the band size varies but currently 40 D or 38D. Recently on a different forum someone suggested I measure beneath my boobs for a more accurate band size, and go with that rather than the cup/band combo, and try a larger cup. Smaller band/larger cup....rather than larger band/smaller cup. I'm going to try this. My daughter is built exactly like me on top, but on bottom like her dad and has small hips. While I used to look like an hourglass or an X from the front, she sideways looks like a P. One of her friends said to her you are from the feet up skinny, skinny, skinny, skinny, skinny, then POW - BOOBS. She took a lot of flack for it in high school but she handled it well. She took a line from Jessica Rabbit and would say...."I'm not bad, I'm just drawn this way" and add to it--don't judge a book by its cover. Unfortunately when you're built this way, males get the wrong idea. Just because you're built like a playground doesn't mean everyone is invited in to play. So for the men (boys) reading this.....remember that. And to the poster who wrote that his penis weighs 10 pounds.....thanks for the chuckle. :) |

I hope you went and had the cheesburger - and ate the whole thing. Your daily calories wouldn't have suffered (unless of course your target was higher). I had a day like that and woke up craving chipotle - I figured out the components of a burrito (the wrap was the worst of it) and I eliminated sour cream, guacamole and cheese, doubled the lettuce and salsa and had chicken which I normally avoid there - and it was fantastic, worth every single calorie, and didn't put me over for the day. That was the first time since the diet that I caved into the crave and I still lost weight that week. It was a real eye opener. Generally, as I'm sure you do, I make my own food and eat balanced. Sometimes, you have to give in to the crave and make it fit into your plan--then move on. It makes you feel normal and that your weight loss efforts don't totally run your life (even tho they do).

Aha - answering these posts/giving advice - would be easier and more accurate if we had the added facts of starting weight/current weight, age, height. Yup, you may very well be not eating enough which makes your body efficient in surviving and struggling to get every drop out of every calorie consumed. Forget my prior weight loss advice--it doesn't serve you.

You are getting very full. Verrrrrrry verrrrrrrrry full. ;) I went to a class at our local high school with an instructor and all...and I swear for me it was rubbish. I got a tape out of it and laid in my bed and relaxed, eyes closed, and listened, listened, listened....let the bodyless voice lull me into a state of......I don't know what.......then, the narrator made an audible mistake, and I was immediately lulled out of any relaxation that was ever going to be possible. Thereafter whenever I listened to the tape, it was as if I was waiting for the dip in the road, the crack in the sidewalk, the BREAK in the monotone....ugh. This was about 15 years ago and no, it made no difference to me. Also, 25 years ago I bought an audio tape from Joe Land (pretty sure that was his name) and supposedly underneath the sounds of the ocean waves there were subliminal messages. Nothing. Didn't work. Also, over the course of my 30 years of dieting, I purchased an accupressure device which looked like a little hearing aid that would slip into your ear and you would wiggle it so the plastic nubs would stimulate and anti-hunger pressure spot. Nonsense. It did nothing. The only thing that has taken off the weight (albeit until now I never realized it was all about maintaining afterwards) is dieting. You can diet smart, or you can diet hard....but its all about eating less, moving more. THIS TIME, I hope to maintain the losses. As I get older, and sicker (hypothroidism, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver, menopausal) it gets harder and harder to make the real magic happen, but I'll be damned if I stop trying. |

That commercial and other typical diet plans, no matter what they are, boil down to reduced calories -- I totally agree. That aside, here is a gem of advice for you sunnygal8888: Use the tool tab here at calorie count, under that, calorie target. Lets pretend that you already weigh your goal weight. So put your start weight and your goal weight at the same weight. Tab through the remaining fields and answer them truly, and find out the amount of calories you need to maintain that weight. I specifically write to use this tab and not the burn tab. Anyhow....when you find out that daily calories figure needed to maintain your goal weight....jot it down, remember it, think about it, and then here is the following scenario. Imagine that tomorrow morning you woke up at goal. Presto-chango, magic wand, abracadabra. It'd be amazing right? You'd be thrilled, right? Wish granted, with one caveat. To STAY that weight, you have to eat to maintain it. Which of course means you have to be pretty diligent about keeping your daily calories stable, or zig zagging them throughout the week to have a splurge now and again that you create a deficit for during another meal. But here's the real truth-----losing weight IS easier than that when you've got weight to lose. When you start heavier, you get to eat more--your deficits don't have to be too hard to achieve. We just reduced up to 500 calories from our daily consumption, and the math, 99% of the time, does all the work. Of course, as we lose, we require less calories and adjust accordingly. There is no miracle cure. It isn't necessarily "easy" to be a human being who has temptations and makes mistakes. But the other side of that is, we learn, hopefully, from our mistakes. Make healthier choices daily. Exchange full fat dairy for 2%, then 1%, then skim if you can. Choose leaner meats and better, whole grains. Hydrate yourself with water. While I don't advocate diet soda, if you are drinking regular, switch to diet temporarily so it is as painless as possible, then switch to seltzer. Myself, I finally got on the water bandwagon and besides coffee with skim milk and the occasional tea, its all I drink. If you drink alcohol, find a less empty alternative--like a wine spritzer instead of ... whatever. Eat lots of veg. Find treats that you actually enjoy. Plan a splurge---PLAN. Planning is the key. Nothing has to be off limits unless it is a RED FLAG food for you. If you can't eat a handful of potato chips without wanting a family sized bag...then don't even start. Avoid them; don't buy them, etc. Have a plan and make sure you have healthy foods around to choose at all times. Life happens -- be prepared. Forgive yourself if you falter; learn from it and move on. You can do this, if you are prepared. Diet smart, not hard. When we diet hard, we set ourselves up for failure. |

5 ft. 8 in. / 145? You sound perfect to me. Maybe you are building muscle? Maybe with your deficit and your workouts - they are cancelling each other out? Could your body have become so efficient that it maintains on fewer calories? I have no answers, but again for your stats, I'm sure you look great. |

First of all, that time of the month ALWAYS brings weight fluctuations, which aren't "real". That is temporary, so never let that bother you. Since you are 17, your dietary needs are more than an older person. That you are 4ft.10in., your dietary requirements are less than that of a taller person. I suggest you input your stats under the "Tools" tab and find the recommended daily requirements for you personally. As to metabolism boosting, you're already doing it--exercise. Good luck. |

| Weight Loss | 5'4 and 133 pounds. how can I diet? | Dec 27 2011 07:21 (UTC) |

Well the good news is at your weight and height it doesn't sound bad at all. I haven't done the math, but you really aren't overweight. Secondly, as a 17 year old, its a bad idea to restrict your calories too much. Again, I haven't done the research, but youths get more to eat than adults on any commercial diet plan. What I suggest is that you enter your stats here under the "Tools" tab. You should get your answer there. Certainly, you should not reduce your daily calories too much as that would be dangerous for your still growing body. If I'm not mistaken (I may be--its late and I don't feel like doing the research) it may be recommended that you NOT go lower than 1800 daily. Hopefully someone else---or you, yourself----can verify that. That you exercise [a lot] is good. I don't know how much a lot is, but so long as it is not too much, keep that up. As to the foods, make healthy choices. Go low fat on the dairy (yogurts, cheeses, milk, ice "cream"). Go for whole grains instead of processed. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Choose real foods over processed frozen and/or canned foods. Lastly, if I were you, I wouldn't aim for too much weight loss. It may be in your case that the exercise is more beneficial than calorie restriction. So, do your diet homework and input your stats and find the answer. |

The rate of working out is most likely building muscle. The way you describe your diet, you've got nothing to worry about; it sounds very sound! Don't obsess about the scale--it will only make you question everything and that isn't a good mindset to be in. Congrats on how well you have done....and continued success ---- don't let this throw you off. At 30 Plus lost pounds, your body may just be adjusting. Keep the faith. |

My base recipe that I always start with is: 6 ice cubes, 1/2 banana, dash of vanilla extract, 1/4 c skim milk To that, I add at least 1 more serving of fruit (1/2 a peach, 1/2 cup berries (blue, straw, rasp, black--whatever you prefer), green grapes, 1/2 an apple. The peach is fantastic. This summer, I added pineapple (canned in juice, drained) and coconut extract. It was like a pina colada. Also, I had fresh cherries and took out the pits (annoying but necessary) and added them, plus a tablespoon of Hershey's unsweetened cocoa and 2 extra ice cubes. What turned out was like Italian ice, chocolate/cherry flavored. Very filling, very delicious, and took a long time to eat with a spoon. I have a VitaMix blender, so the ice gets pulvarized no problem. I got to the point where I'm pealing and freezing 1/2 bananas, and when fresh fruit starts to "go" I cut it in 1/4s and freeze it. The VitaMix can handle the frozen fruit. My daughter likes to add the cocoa powder and a tsp. of sugar to all her smoothies. |

www.skinnytaste.com -- that has become my current favorite. I especially like the revamped no-bake cheesecake, and, taking that a bit further, I find the 1/4 cup of sugar is unnecessary, at least for my sweet tooth. Also, I spoon it into individual servings, top with a dusting of graham cracker crumbs and a teaspoon of all bran buds, and sliced strawberries. Its fantastic. |

About the monthly temporary weight gain, there's really nothing we can do about it except to expect it and deal with it as temporary. It happens for a reason and really isn't gain, just natural fluctuation. If it really disturbs you and throws off your mojo, stay off the scale during TOM (time of month). Secondly, stay off the scale but once a week under the same conditions (morning, after using the toilet, naked). I once weighed myself at 4 a.m. when I got up to tinkle, and at 7 a.m. I weighed 2 full pounds less. Go figure. Make it a weekly routine--you're less apt to be upset with the scale by daily fluctuations. Why you would get TOM 5 days after the last and that never having happened before, I don't have an answer. I can't say something isn't medically going on with you, or if it is because of your diet. What I can add is that I'm 52 and menopausal. I started eating better in the spring, but when I started weight watchers in late July, after not having TOM for 3 months, it arrived after the first week of WW, then 28 days later like clockwork. Now, it has left me for another expanse of time, so who is to say the diet didn't "regulate" me for a while? I don't know. As far as your calorie intake, however, at 246 lbs. you might want to aim for the higher end. Diet smart, not hard. Don't make it more difficult for yourself to stick to your program. Do yourself a favor and calculate the calories needed to maintain your current weight, then do not reduce past 500 from that figure. Lastly, congrats thus far, and good luck. Stick to it until it becomes a habit. :) |

Well, the upside of falling off the wagon temporarily is that over the course of your weight loss journey you have built better habits, and that they are habits, will be easier to fall back on. For instance, drinking more water to hydrate and flush out the sodium. I myself have stopped drinking anything but water rather than club soda or juice. That is a given now, and only since July. Eating better overall will have stuck with you. That you want to get back to your program is another big plus. That the holiday foods will be disappearing is another. I have no doubt we'll all be back on track in no time! Good luck. |

How much have you lost/what was your starting weight/what is your current weight? Are you "really gaining" or could it be hormonal TOM or sodium? Could it be a normal fluctuation? OR, have you put on like 10 pounds back to your weight? Do you weigh in daily? It could be nothing at all just normal fluctuation or water weight. If, really, it is gain, then you have to examine if it could indeed be building muscle. If so, are your clothes getting tighter, remained the same or looser? All things to consider. |

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
