No one should feel shame, you're right Fern. I'm sorry you had to even think for ONE SECOND, that someone close to you may have been injured, or worse by this.

I am going to say that I assume that to most Americans- an act of terrorism on home soil is very personal.

I know I'd feel that way anyways. Even if I didn't have friends and family involved directly.

This.

ooookay so I ask this purely because I don't know -- does Canadian news spend more time on these things, or do you just seek them out to be well informed? Honestly?

Because while I was stuck in my house on Friday a Canadian friend of mine launched a verbal assault on Americans and how we don't give a **** about global causes, and we only care when tragedy strikes on American soil.

First my thought was "wow what a harsh generalization of my country" and then "where does this opinion come from"?

My best answer was from watching our news media and it's choice in coverage, but I'm curious if it's something else?

On that note, I hate mainstream media.

the other piece, of course, is that the bombers chose the target they did because of the zillion cameras they knew would be there. which means that they're getting exactly what they wanted: heaps and heaps of attention and publicity.

I know personally what angered me (besides the obvious death and fear) was the attack on my country.  I don't always agree with our policies and nonsense, but I love this country.

the texas event was just a tragedy.  it's true -- i had no one  to be angry at (per se).  and it's much harder to be angry at (what seemed) like a random tragic event than a planned assault on innocent people.  doesn't mean i cared any less... at all.

Also, I know it's been said in this thread before, but seriously...

look at how well CNN is doing covering everything in a balanced manner.

anybody else grow up in a small one-industry town?

maybe that's why the texas story feels closer to me. growing up in mining and mill towns, i can imagine (not really, but sort-of) what it might be like to have the primary industry, on which the whole area depends, blow the **** out of itself and half the town.

Yes. Exactly. These people may not run marathons because they're putting food on the table by what may be the only means available to them, working for the only company available and being treated like crap.

you realize it really had very little to do with the marathon other than it was a great place to blow the crap out of innocent people, right?

it's not a lack of empathy.  at all.  i think personally, it's because it's a flat out attack, as jules said.  someone deliberately and purposefully attacked innocent people, and tried to kill/injure as many as possible.  it's not like something that was already there exploded, these **** walked bombs into the crowd.

that said, it is proximity for me, for sure.  that and i can't even begin to imagine the horrors in West, Texas right now where as Boston i can go down and see/was a part of to some extent.

i certainly don't lack empathy for them. at all.  i can't imagine it.. and i can only hope the survivors find peace and that justice is ultimately served.

So glad it's over!! Thanks for the concern guys, I heard the shots and explosions as we're were about to go out for a walk and obviously we stayed put.

Heard the shouts and clapping when they had him :)

We (a LOT of folks came out) drank on the street and waved to law enforcement, FBI, medics etc as they decamped.

Now I'd like to forget that **** name and go on with life.

Seems like the Loungeites never get tired of posting on the RAGG.

Loungeites tend to post and comment on topics that happen to be in the current newscycle.  If you have a problem with the frequency distribution of the forum topic selection, you could complain to the networks, newswires, and news blogs.

Or write passionate letters to the NRA, the SCOTUS, and Congress begging them to make your internet posting life less tedious.

But I think it would be best to figure out why your internet browser forces you to read CC Lounge topics you have no interest in.

UGGGG I don't read them and rarely post in them.  They all play out the same way.  I guess I'll just continue to down bottles of self tanner and text my ex.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAH holy crap (that was kind of mean... but I laughed real hard)

I'm super scared for you febs, even if you aren't scared yourself. :P

I thought I read that you aren't supposed to answer the door, but then how are they checking in on people? I guess if you see several swat guys you know it's not a baddie... but still. Gosh. :(

I hope they manage to get that POS alive. I hate when they die. They get away with so much.

ETA: I think I read they had found more bombs and were disarmed or something?

I REALLY hope it was just the 2 of them and not a bigger group...

I dunno... I don't know if we will.  they just questioned a guy north west of us a block or a few who was out walking.  I want to go to my apartment.  aka i'm being a brat.

eta i've been on vacation since Saturday and just came home INTO this last night.  s

Oh ok, I knew you were in watertown right now, but i just thought you lived there. Well, I'm really glad to find out you aren't by yourself. <3

not yet KG and R and I were just saying that it's weird they haven't.  I assume the perimeter is east of us and not a concern over here?  Still.

ETA: now they're talking about needing batteries.  *sigh* I'd hoped they had him

they have a guy with a black hoodie and cap.. but that doesn't sound right..

Around here they are saying the City could be on lock down into tomorrow.

I wouldn't be surprised if the kid crawled under a house somewhere and offed himself.

I wonder if he could have been injured?  I wouldn't be surprised if he was bleeding out somewhere.

Please no.. I want to go home and see my cat.. :(

Also, this is a "smart" kid. It doesn't make sense to me that he would be the mastermind behind the bombing and then wait around like a sitting duck to just end up running and getting caught... but I'll hope for the best of course.

heh.  yeah. i'm with you, but I think the older brother was the leader of this... and the younger got caught up.

i also think this is probably the case, though i don't think it makes the younger one any less of a monster.

agreed but it makes me hope that maybe there isn't a finale planned that just the younger one can pull off.

interesting, and a little disconcerting, that both the uncle in boston and the aunt in toronto seem to be screamers.

i don't know if you intended this to be funny but i laughed.

when i saw them i literally said to R "apparently they don't know what purpose microphones serve".

the aunt kept yelling at the press for mixing up what she said too. she was pissed!

R was in the kitchen and came in because he kept hearing "chicken"  heh.
