| Health & Support | What do ED specialists do? | Jul 01 2009 21:06 (UTC) |

I saw an ED specialist with regards to anorexia and yes, I was weighed, but I had a choice if I wanted to see my weight or not. We focused a lot on my past, why I am such a perfectionist and so hard on myself, as well as the time when my ED really developed. We also focused on coping strategies, ways I could not be so triggered in various situations, and also my parents came with me some (even though I was in college at the time) and they were able to better understand my disorder, and thus, how to help me. It was a very positive experience because I didn't feel SO guilty all the time about doing this to myself and my family/friends. I highly recommend going. |

Talking with a physical therapist is also a great option, especially if you are looking at doing a marathon. During my marathon training I was having some assorted pain but saw a physical therapist who helped me establish a good stretching plan and if you have any foot pain they can help fit you for orthotics, which I feel like help align not just your feet, but your whole body. Also, when you are running so much is important to have proper shoes. Sorry if this is off track at all, but it could be helpful. Good luck with your race! Do you have a certain marathon in mind? |

I would pass out. I can't go without food for more than a couple of hours anymore. I've heard mixed things about fasting, though, but I know some people that do a juice fast once in a while. They say it helps improve digestion and brain function, etc. I'll stick with my solid food but I'm interested to hear how it turns out for you! Best of luck. |

Are you taking progesterone? Because that helped me with my period once, and made me also feel like I was preggers (depressed and my boobs hurt like a mo' fo'). Whatever you are taking sounds like it's a short term thing, and your health is important- and having a normal cycle is VERY important. Exercise, not eating a lot of salt, and treating yourself to something nice (facial, manicure, etc.) are good ideas when you are feeling bloated or down. Or, if your name here is referring to the Flight of the Concords, I recommend watching some of their episodes, etc. Always makes me feel better. :) |

It would be nice to have be FULLY recovered, but I don't know if it is possible. Even though I'm a normal weight again and I don't count calories on what I eat, if I go to certain places where I used to know the calories of food I will start adding things up in my head or I'll count sometimes without thinking. But hey, I'm staying positive. :) |

Original Post by stayinthenight: Starvation mode is when your body realizes it's not getting enough calories, so you lose weight lower and your metabolism goes wayyyy down. I have experienced this, and it is definitely real. At first when I was restricting I thought it was a load of crap, but then I became used to eating ---- (not posting it in case it is triggering for anyone) and when I started eating 1200 calories I gained some weight. While I was exercising. That's starvation mode! And about speaking to someone, I'm sorry your family isn't more understanding. If you don't fee comfortable confiding in them, what about a close friend or even your physician? Or a psychologist/psychiatrist? There are many which specialize in EDs and helping you establish a positive relationship with food and I highly recommend meeting with someone before you lose more weight and truly damage yourself. I was told "when you lose your body, you lose your mind" and once you start losing more weight the obsession only furthers and you won't realize that what you are doing is so dangerous. Good luck to you, feel free to message me anytime. I know too much about this :-(. |

| Health & Support | What do I do in Ireland!!!??? HELP :S | Jun 29 2009 18:33 (UTC) |

Hey, I went to Greece while I was in recovery, and basically just 'sucked it up' and ate the food. Well, I fell in love with it and since I couldn't count calories- I stopped. And even when I was continuing to gain I just sort of judged and haven't counted since. Think about this: You are in Ireland! You are in a new, exciting place and there is probably so much awesome stuff to try/great experiences and your ED doesn't want you to have fun, doesn't want you to enjoy yourself. But you do, and this is a chance to tell your ED to go, well, f*** itself (to put it nicely :)!). At first it will be scary as hell, but focus on intuitive eating- if you want that ---- (insert delicious food here) then have it! Enjoy yourself. Think more about all the cool stuff you get to do instead of eating non-safe foods. I promise that once you start enjoying yourself your ED will take a backseat :) |

It happened to me, but my sleep pattern wasn't great to begin with. I would take a sip of Nyquil and that helped (note: I'm not trying to condone using Nyquil for the wrong purpose, it just helped me a lot), and eventually with the help of my gp tried Rx sleeping pills- which didn't help at all. I felt real jittery a lot-even though I was still drinking caffeine- and had ridiculous night sweats, and also refeeding is stressful! Hope your sleep issue gets worked out. I would try some sort of OTC thing if it progresses for a while. |

Keeping eating and enjoy it! When I was gaining and trying to get my period back, I just made sure I ate lots of healthy fats. I too love eating and had no problems getting calories in, and sometimes I miss getting to eat to gain ;-). The day I got mine back I went out to a bar with some girl friends and celebrated. Sounds corny, but it was fun! edit: Also, I'm the same height as you and got mine back around 115-116ish. But everyone is different. Good luck! |

Please go back! I had an ED and a lot of had to do with having IBS problems, which spiraled into restricting, which spiraled into being severely underweight, and losing so many things/people in my life that were important to me. Freaking out about eating so few calories is a definite sign of developing an ED, and a lot of your post really worries me. I really see myself in your post, and I would NEVER wish for anyone to go down the road I went down. I know you don't want to burden family/friends with this, but please talk to someone that can help you start eating a 'normal' amount. I know it's scary, but you don't want to live like this forever, and there are so, so many better things to focus your time on than calories. You can even speak with your doctor about this, and I'm sure they could help set you up with someone to speak with. Also, feel free to PM me anytime. Good luck to you! |

Hey, well I NEEDED to gain a ton of weight, but I began gaining by myself and was real unsure so did 2000 calories, and was able to put on a bit of weight for about 3 weeks, but then it stopped and my metabolism went real crazy and I needed over 3500 cals a day. But things are normal now, and I know what you mean about your clothes getting tight- it is tough, but I promise it will be worth it in the end! No one can live comfortably on eating so few calories, I know I missed out on a lot of great dinners/parties/etc. because I was afraid of eating more, and now never miss out. So good luck! You can do it! |

Hey anne, I used to eat about that much and became severely anorexic, and when I started eating a "normal" amount I quickly went from 90 to 98ish pounds (but being almost 5'8 I had a ways to go!), things leveled off though, and I eventually had to eat a ton to gain, and so I stopped gaining at 2000 or whatnot. Gaining on such a minimal number is just a result of your metabolism all out of whack, and at least for me, was only a short term thing. I would eat 2000 for a bit longer, just to get your metabolism back to normal. I'm not sure if you need to gain or not, not knowing what you weigh and all that, but if you do need to gain weight I would eat more that 2000, but if you just need to maintain 2000 is quite a dandy number. Best of luck to you! |

Hey, I was anorexic/over-exerciser and it's real scary having to give up over-exercising. In all honesty, I don't think you have screwed up your metabolism for good, although it may be slightly affected at first. It can be scary giving up something you are used to doing, so maybe you could do, say, 20 minutes less a day for a week (or as much as you may feel comfortable doing), see how you feel, and go from there slowly decreasing? I don't know exactly how your metabolism will be affected, but that is A LOT of cardio, and when I stopped doing so much I realized that there are other things I could do instead- spend time with family, friends, etc. Good luck! |
