Health & Support My first post in a while... Advice please May 26 2012

I have never had an ED, but I have gone through periods of getting obsessed with losing more and more weight. For me it's "I need to lose x lbs" and once I reach it, it doesn't feel good enough so I keep lowering my goal weight. All I can say is take it one day at a time and don't look at any magazines. I think for a woman who is focused on weight magazines are the worst thing to look at because they make you feel fat regardless of how thin you really are. It takes time to change one's thinking so don't be too hard on yourself and try to think positive. Surround yourself with positive people who will encourage you and who care about you. Good luck on your journey! Smile

Rikaj,

I think you made some really good points and I totally agree. I've also found that drinking hot tea helps to stifle my appetite, but I just put splenda in mine. Also, I've recently found that eating pineapple can really satisfy a sweet tooth. Not the stuff in the can though, it's gotta be the real thing. I just bought one the other day and cut it up into bite size pieces and stored whatever I didn't eat to snack on later. I can't tell you how sweet it is and so much less fattening than snacking on cookies or cupcakes (my weakness, lol)! I got the idea from a friend and it totally works for me! Laughing

truthfully, its totally a pain. i'm like 5'2 and probably between 110-112 right now, started out last year aroudn 118 (gained from college) and it took me awhile to actually lose the weight and keep it off. i am/was a binger, so i started with trying to make my binges smaller and smaller, and binge on healthier things, like graham crackers rather than cookies, etc. im pretty active, runner and i lift weights and play soccer from time to time. anyway, i was recently able to get to my goal weight in japan of around 105, but as soon as i came home i felt deprived and ate my way back to the 110-112 range. when i was really low though i was constantly calculated calories and worrying about it, which isn't fun either. i'm debating with myself right now if its really worth trying to lose the extra few lbs, or if i should just focus on maintaining a muscular 110-115 frame...idk its all how bad you want it i think. when i really want to be skinny, before i eat something that i "shouldn't" i think about it and think i'd rather be thin than enjoy this. when im getting a little loose on my diet, i eat it haha. those extra 10-15 are hard work though, i dont think 110 is unmanageable though depending on your frame and such. i can maintain 110 pretty easily once i get there. another trick is i substiture hot tea for a nighttime snack if im feeling hungry. i put a splash of skim milk in it and fake creamer, it takes away my sweet tooth and fills me up...just did it tonight actually.

Do you really exercise 5 times a day or did you mean week? I actually am in a very similar situation except my problem is trying to tone up, but I suppose losing a little bit more weight in my belly area wouldn't hurt either. Tongue out Anyway, I have no advice to offer at the moment since I am having a hard time getting to my goal weight and staying there give or take a few extra lbs. However, I'm looking forward to any possible advice and I'm glad you posted this topic. Laughing

Original Post by tumanator:

The Meaning in the advice is good, but I just don't have any relationships to work on, due to many changes in my life in the last couple years I don't have any social networks in my local area, friends or otherwise.

And to anyone that glances at this, don't try to diet for any reason other than just for your personal health, cause no other reason will get you anywhere.

I have to disagree with not feeling better after losing the weight because I feel much better about myself now than I did when I was fat (sorry to be so blunt but I was). I'm more confident and I feel less insecure than I did back then. However, everyone is different and I suppose that not everyone will react the same to losing weight.

As far as the social thing goes...I can relate because I am a military spouse far away from home and have been for the past three years. I have had a hard time making friends as well because I don't work and friends come and go when you're in the military. I would suggest social networking sites like myspace or facebook because in a way they've helped me out with meeting others in similar situations. Maybe you could even try finding a local group on here that you could possibly meet up with every once in a while. And don't feel bad, I'm still having a hard time making friends because I only have 2 here and both of them will be gone for the summer so then I won't have any. Frown  So don't feel bad, you're not the only one.

I'm 30 and I think my number is 8, but for some reason I always feel like I'm forgetting someone, lol. I'm married now so hopefully I never end up getting divorced and end up going on a sex rampage to where the numbers just skyrocket Tongue out. I knew a guy once who'd had over 1,000 partners! Crazy stuff!

Health & Support Saving calories for "that day" May 11 2009

Yes, I also do this most of the time but I do it more with alcohol rather than food. I usually try to keep track of my calories and on the weekends I'll allow myself a glass of wine (or a few) or maybe a few beers (MGD 64 is great for staying within my calorie limit). Although it sounds great in theory, this method of doing it with food doesn't really work for me because I usually can't wait for the weekend to roll around so instead I allow myself a few bites of something that I'm craving and that usually satisfies me without me having to go overboard. I've also noticed that on the weekends as long as I don't go overboard with the alcohol my weight is not affected because I work out enough during the week to maintain. It sounds like this plan is working very well for you so if it ain't broke don't fix it and keep up the good work! Wink

Pregnancy & Parenting Baby is almost here, what kind of diet should I start after the baby? May 04 2009

Well, in my opinion, you may not have to worry about going on a "diet" to lose weight after the baby is  born because if this is your first child and you have good genes you will probably lose the weight quickly without having to worry about it. This happened to me after my first child, but with my second child (about 8 yrs later) I blew up like a balloon and I also breastfed.

I would just go for not necessarily restricting yourself but just making sure that you are eating healthy...pretty much what the other posters have said. Although you do burn 500 cal/day just through breastfeeding alone you will have to be careful with what you eat because you will be hungry ALL the time, or at least I was and I didn't really watch what I ate until I got fed up with being fat.

So, I would wait until after the six weeks and see how your body is handling everything. As I said before, you may not even have to worry about trying to lose weight if you're lucky. Wink Best of luck to you! Laughing

Vegetarian Is It Wise to Go On a Fruit and Vegetable Fast? May 03 2009
21:20 (UTC)
23

Well, as far as I know the whole point of fasting is to not eat a lot in order to lose weight or, in some cases, grow spiritually (depends on what your purpose it). Anyway, I don't think you'd really be fasting if you added all that other stuff in like the beans, tofu, fish, and eggs. I'm no expert and I've personally never fasted myself. On the other hand, the closest I've ever come was last week when I came down with a cold/allergies and everything tasted so bland that I didn't even want to eat. I did end up eating soup on those days though and altogether I lost 5 lbs.

So, in a nutshell, I don't think it would hurt you to fast for no longer than 2 or three days. I think that you'd be ok healthwise during that time too as long as you slowly go back to eating a well balanced diet afterwards. During my accidental fast, I felt fine (other than having a cold, lol) and I don't think I hurt myself at all. Of course, I'm also no health professional, but those are my 2 cents. Smile

Health & Support hunger and ADHD May 03 2009

Well, I'm not exactly sure what you want advice on so I will just assume that you're wanting advice on how to balance everything without feeling sick and not eating so much.

So, I've never heard of mononessa...is it a pill? If so, have you thought about trying some other birth control option like the IUD or maybe something like Nuva Ring? It could also just be that since you just started the bc, your body is still adjusting and things may get better in a few weeks. Or, if trying different bc is not an option, have you thought about switching your meds for the ADHD?

As for healthy options when it comes to food, are there any grocery stores or health food stores nearby...maybe within walking distance? If not, just try not to get too many fried foods in the cafeteria and I'm sure that they probably offer fruit too, right?

Sorry if I haven't helped much, but I would strongly advise talking to your doctor, especially due to the side effects you're experiencing. Your doctor would probably be able to help you figure something out as far as the meds go.

Weight Loss What do you do to properly count calories for home-made food? Apr 20 2009

I usually just guestimate. You're not always going to get your calorie intake for the day exactly right, unless you are super anal about it and have a food scale and count out exact portions. In my opinion, that is way too time consuming and I would rather enjoy my food than worry about every teensy weensy amount of calories that I may be eating.

Calorie count's recipe calculator doesn't help me out much, but I found one that seems to work better for me. It's always worth a try and if all else fails, just make sure that you're consuming healthy calories instead of the super fattening ones. Hope this helps somewhat. Smile

Fitness Elliptical vs Treadmill Apr 13 2009
15:47 (UTC)
13

I have tried both and I honestly think that it's more of a personal preference because I really really do not like the elliptical...it hurts my knees...which is what everyone else says about the treadmill, lol. I personally have noticed that when I'm on the elliptical it takes me about 20 minutes just to burn 50 calories, but when I'm the treadmill I can burn 50 calories in only about 5 minutes.

Then again, I also have a friend who says she can burn about 700 calories on the elliptical alone within an hour. So, honestly, in my own opinion I think you'd be better off burning calories on the treadmill, but it also depends on the level/heart rate you're aiming for as well.

But, to answer your question, I have seen better results on the treadmill. Others may disagree, but that's just my two cents. Smile

Foods Eating out.. Apr 03 2009

From what I can tell, most of the other posters have already covered anything I would've said and I think they've given great advice. I just wanted to add that if at this cafe or restaurant where you decide to eat, they do not have many fruit choices or healthy vegetables to offer that aren't slathered in butter or oil, you could always try ordering soup as well. Tomato and broth based soups are usually the best way to go and if you're not sure about the sodium content of a broth based soup you could always refrain from adding extra salt and try to drink lots of water to flush out all the extra sodium just in case (and maybe limit the use of saltine crackers if you use them). In my own experiences though, I have never had a hard time trying to find at least one healthy item on the menu, even if I go to a restaurant that doesn't offer much in the way of healthy alternatives. Sometimes you just have to get creative and find ways to minimize your caloric content, but it's well worth doing so in the end. Btw, I'm adding you as a friend too. =)

Fitness Please Help Me. (Always Hungry For sweet Carbs like cereal, oatmeal) Feb 12 2009

I work out at night and I experience the same problem after I'm done. I usually just try to keep a low cal snack on hand so that I don't have to go through the torture of not eating anything at all. When you work out you're burning calories and energy, so that's why you're feeling so hungry afterwards. I've also heard that eating a healthy snack before working out is good too because our bodies are like vehicles that need the fuel for energy. So, maybe you could try eating a healthy snack before working out so that you're not so tempted to chow down afterwards. Btw, I also have a serious sweet tooth and I found these pineapple parfaits at the grocery store and they are sooo good (only 70 cals too). I know they're not carbs, but it's still something sweet and it's healthy too. Try substituting the sweet carb cravings for things like bananas and oranges. It's worked for me.

I also read somewhere that when you're craving a certain something (like carbs for instance) it's because your body is lacking in something. Try googling it and see what you come up with so that maybe you can figure out why you keep craving carbs. Whatever you do though, don't stop working out. That will definitely bring the weight back! Good luck! Laughing

Weight Loss Hunger interfering with weight loss Jan 06 2009

In response to juicysmo's post, I agree. I try to stretch my low cal meals out through the day, but I have to workout at night so by the time I'm done I start feeling hungry again. However, instead of raiding the fridge I usually try to reserve a 100 cal or less snack or I drink a hot cup of oolong tea. Usually, the tea does it for me and helps stifle my hunger so I usually don't even need the snack, but I keep it reserved just in case. And instead of using sugar to sweeten the tea I just use 3 packets of splenda so that I'm not ingesting any extra calories.

Sorry for the late check in (again). My weight on Wed was 140. Down three lbs from last week, but I'm not holding my breath that it will stay this way. If this thread keeps going I won't be able to check in again for 2 weeks because I'm going out of town and I don't know how much internet access I'll have. Hopefully I won't fall off the wagon though and come back 10 lbs heavier!

Count me in too if it's okay because my goal is more around 130-135ish. I'm currently 142 lbs and 5'5. My original goal was 135, but since I'm trying to lose pregnancy weight I still have a pooch and I think that it will finally be gone once I'm between 130 and 135.

Just an FYI to clarify. It is UNFERMENTED and processed soy (tofu/soy milk/soy cheese) that causes these and other estrogen related problems. It may also be linked to reduded thyroid function.

Fermented soy, such as miso and tempeh are perfectly harmless and excellent sources of protein.

Isn't that what auresvita has already said?
