The Lounge Preparing to move out for the first time? Sep 23 2010

Thanks everyone! I would be moving in with my boyfriend who is clean and likes to cook (he should be more worried about me lol). I don't think I could do roommates. I definitely have enough saved up (yay living at home + being cheap).

Dove - I was shocked how many ads said 'no pets allowed', fortunately I found out in my province (Ontario) landlords legally can't prevent you from owning pets (unless they are really causing a problem etc). Muttlover - I know all about landlords like that, we live in a duplex with her parents living below us on the main floor. I will definitely keep that in mind.

How about what to look for when I go see a place? Spirochete mentioned their place seemed ok at first. Should I check cupboards for cockroaches and stuff? lol

And any other tips a first time renter should know? My mom has mentioned insurance, which I probably wouldn't have thought of otherwise (I always thought it was for home owners :s).

That's funny, my boyfriend is the same. We are starting to rub off on each other though, he's been getting more money conscious and smarter about spending, he's also been putting a portion of his paycheck into savings. As for me I'm not quite as uptight, I don't deny myself as much.

And then think that at least your not WASTING the money, it is going towards something that you worked hard for and is yours and is providing a necessity to your life

I was actually trying to tell myself the same thing.

Anyway thanks for the tips!

I like names with some thought put into it. See what she's like for a day or two, her personality, interesting markings, colours etc.

I named one of our cats Alomar because he has extra toes and his paws looked like a baseball mitt, so I named him after the baseball player Roberto Alomar (I was 11 and he's the only one I knew :P)...we just call him Al though. My brother got a calico kitten, I thought of Jenga since her blobs of colour sort of fit together like jenga blocks. Also Maui (like 'mow-ie', kinda like the sounds cats make), Terra (like tera firma, her blobs are like the continants of earth). A friend had one named Pebbles which is cute. My dad's dog's name is Isis (Egyptian goddess), which fits her because she's a pure white blue eyed husky, so it sounds like 'Ice'. One of her puppies I named Sabbath because he was the 7th and last born. I had a black rat when I was 8 that I named Pitch, more unique than 'Blackie' (no offense to anyone but I really hate that name).

Anyway, I say be creative :)

My friend had a smiliar issue with two cats of hers.  Mother and son continuing to live together. She was told the reaction was occuring because in nature, said son shoud be leaving the nest, not sticking aorund, so the mother was reacting that way in an attempts to get him to leave.  Eventually everything evened out and they became more tolerable of each other.

This is my guess.

yeah seriously.. its not completely out of character for a 16 year old.

I figured by this day and age unsafe sex would be out of character for anyone at any age. What the hell is sex ed teaching? The pull out method!? Really!?!?

While I'm not saying it should be taught, it's actually not a whole lot less effective than condoms (with perfect use of course).

i'm sorry.  that sucks.  i live in a city where bikes get stolen on a super regular basis.  when i was a kid, we had our locked bikes stolen off our front porch in the middle of the afternoon and we lived on a super quiet side street.

my friends that ride bikes now all bring them inside their homes/office/etc. as locking them outside simply isn't enough.  i would recommend keeping your bike indoors when you aren't using it.

I live on the top floor of a duplex, so not that easy...but I guess the inconvenience is better than losing my property.

Maybe you could call animal control and find out what they would do exactly? I think you should report it though, the fact that they don't at least keep that female seperate while she's in heat shows they are a) stupid and shouldn't own pets or b) don't care as much as you think and shouldn't own pets.

My wife and I were married at 23

We dated for 4 years before marriage and are still happily married - sometimes you just know if it's the person for you and age doesn't really matter

I think 99% of people feel the same way...and still end up divorced. Most people don't go into it thinking "well I guess s/he is the one".

I also dreamed I had a baby last night, there was no actual being pregnant or giving birth part though. It stayed a baby for a couple days and then it suddenly was a few years old. I remember thinking just how well behaved this baby was (never cried) and that having one wasn't so bad after all.

Because every idiot I grew up with has a crap load of them and that scares me.  The future looks dim.  I think my kid could possibly have a half a brain.

I think most people feel that way though, that their kid is going to be better.

ok..what about an RRSP GIC? (sounds like it might be the same as an IRA?) Tax wise maybe it's better than a regular GIC.

Is there someone I could talk to that isn't affiliated with a bank so I can get unbiased advice/explanations in person?

I'm already going to Cuba in September, lorik :)

Where are you going?  I love Sol Cayo Guillermo - very small resort (300 rooms) and quite remote, but the most beautiful beach in the world!

Cayo Coco at the NH Krystal. The beaches there do look amazing.

I got an email back from Achieva that says I can't add more funds to a GIC until it matures. So what I'll probably do is put 5k into the tax free GIC, then the rest into a regular GIC. Then I'll have to decide if I want to start adding to a TFSA, or get another TF GIC for 5k. The latter would make more but again I wouldn't have access to it. Although if I started getting one each year, then after the initial 5 years, I'd start having a mature GIC every year. (I hope my reasoning makes sense to everyone :P)

I could lend you my kitten that has been constantly walking back and forth in front of me trying to rub herself on my face while I'm trying to type on here (I'm on my bed with the laptop). She seems to be an insomniac too, I think her favourite time to try to get attention and play is the middle of the night. I have to lock her out of my room at night because she will just keep walking in a circle on me and my pillow, then stick her face in mine as if to check if I'm awake. I try to put up with it in hopes she will eventually lay down and sleep, but she doesn't stop!

Hahah it's weird to me seeing someone saying they're going to cuba. I want to go to Cuba! Dammit USA!

Yeah. I've got two Canadian friends in Cuba right now. One has been there 3 weeks already. She's in love with it. Based on the what the news is reporting (which we know can't always be trusted), sounds like our chance to go is getting closer.

Sorry to hijack your thread, vice.

Well from my researching of the place, it seems American's are finding ways to go there anyway. I didn't really know much about Cuba, it wasn't my first choice, but it's definitely cheaper than other countries. The cheapest package I found was like $460 for a week :s (that's flight, hotel, food and drinks).

My bank only offers 2.10% for 5 year, so I'll probably go with the online ones.

Bonds sounded good until I read about them, right now I don't want to do anything that I could lose money on.

Can you put more money into a GIC/CD? Or do you have to keep starting separate ones?

I am trying to figure out which route or combinations will produce the most. Achieva Financial and Outlook Financial have 3.8% interest on GICs (ING has 3%), I could put 5k into the TFSA GIC, and then the rest into a regular GIC. That's why I'm wondering if I can keep adding 5k a year on the TFSA GIC (and if I have more, add it to the other one). That would make the most money, the downside would be I don't have access to the money for 5 years...well I guess that could also be a plus (no option to spend it) :P

So I could put $5000 into the TFSA and the rest of the money into a CD (GIC is the Canadian version I believe)? Since CDs have a higher rate than savings accounts, and if I need to I can take money out of the TFSA.

ING has 3% rate for the TFSA, which is a lot more than the other places, is there a catch I'm not seeing?
