Foods Does anyone eat Quinoa or Chia seeds? Jun 20 2012

Original Post by pushbuttonkitty:

i love quinoa, i sub it for rice all the time.  i soak and rinse, though, even if the package says it's already been soaked and rinsed, because bitter quinoa is nothing you want to taste!

one of my favorite ways to eat quinoa is took cook it in faux chik'n broth (i'm a veggie) with a two to one liquid to quinoa ratio.  then i chop a mexican zucchini and a tomato, add some black beans (i cook my own in the crock pot and freeze them to avoid eating canned foods as much as possible) and maybe a colored bell pepper if they're on sale, and some shredded cheddar cheese and some seasoning (cumin, cayenne, whatev) and then mash half an avocado and mix it all together.  the avocado helps bind everything, and if you mix the zucchini and peppers in while the quinoa is still hot it cooks enough to be crisp tender without getting soggy or having to cook it separately.

you can use the same theory to do a mediterranean flavor instead of mexican (change the seasonings, sub for feta, sub for chickpeas, whatev) and it pretty much becomes a base for whatever you can imagine.  leftovers are yummy in a wrap or tortilla with some shredded lettuce.

Drool........   this thread is making me hungry!

I eat quinoa - I think it's tastes good.

Here's what I often do with it -

Cook it according to package directions.

Let it cool a little and then put it in the fridge.

Chop up some cucumber, tomato, and red onion. Stir it into the quinoa.

When I'm ready to eat it, I add some chopped fresh herb, like cilantro or basil.

Then I put it on my salad.

If I make a large batch, I'll put a little lite italian dressing, or just olive oil, in there with it to keep it moist.

no idea about chia seeds.

That sounds amazing!  Throw in a bit of feta and a couple of olives..... I'm there!

This ^^

I would just estimate;  its easy to let these little details drive you crazy!  Just choose what you think is an accurate enough estimate of the amount of marinade/syrup that you actually ingest,  then log that each time.

Back in the 90s before most people had internet,  and web-sites like CC didn't exist,  it was hard for me to find exact calorie counts for certain foods,  so I would look up calories for a few similar types of foods,  then take an average.  It seemed more important that I logged (in pen!!) something for each food I ate,  even if that value wasn't totally accurate.  Consistency counts :)

Foods Does diet soda really cause cancer? Jun 18 2012

Birth control in tap water .. I'm sorry but WTF.

Do people really believe that? who drink's tap water now a day's anyways..I don't. I don't know if I believe the cancer thing also because they say you can get cancer from anything pretty much now..I probably would have been dead already.  Even if there is birth control pills in tap water, It's probably not a lot to do much damage unless you drink a whole bathtub load of tap water everyday

I drink tap-water!  Its free and clean,  and where I live ,  it tastes good too.  It also doesn't come in a wasteful plastic bottle.

Tap-water is also usually subject to more stringent regulation and control than bottled water;  it is therefore usually safer.  Anyways,  many bottled waters are just tap-water put into disposable (therefore wasteful) bottles in one place,  then trucked across long-distances, using up valuable resources (gas, oil, tires, wear-and-tear on trucks and roads, traffic congestion on roads) and causing pollution (truck exhaust, noise pollution from said trucks).  Not to mention that some types of plastic bottles can leach harmful compounds into the water they hold (remember bisphenol-A anyone?).

Don't buy into bottled water!  Go taps go!!

P.S. not related, but if you carbonate your own water, you could make all sorts of home made/sugar-free/personalized sodas and know exactly what you're drinking for much MUCH less cash per glass. Just a thrift-tip!

This is a good idea if you love pop.  Another advantage would be that you would be using table sugar instead of HFCS.... and you could control how much sugaryou added.

Personally I think water is the best/healthiest drink,  but everyone has different issues/tastes/preferences.

OP -- you could try replacing your sweet craving with fruit -- try something you don't usually get,  like pink grapefruit, nectarines, cantaloupe, watermelon, or even berries in a smoothie.

It won't be calorie-free,  but you'll be getting fibre, nutrients, anti-oxidants, water, etc.  and the chewing you have to do (except for the smoothie) slows down the eating,  and makes you feel fuller/more satisfied than just guzzling down something quickly.

I guess I'm lucky that I'm not a regular pop drinker -- both the regular and diet versions tend to make me thirsty for real plain water!

Good for you for walking!!   Truly one of the best exercises .. relatively easy on the joints, we already know how to do it (no learning curve),  and you get to explore the area you live in.

I totally support you,  and I say congratulations for beginning your journey!  I've added you to my "supporting" list.

Cheers, Violet

Health & Support Period Jun 09 2012

If there's a possibility you're pregnant,  find out.  Better to find out sooner than later on something like that.

If you suffer from anorexia,  you may have lost your period if your body-fat has gone too low.

Any number of medical issues could cause you to miss periods,  so the main thing is to get to a doctor -- try a clinic or the emergency room if you don't have your own Dr.

Good luck,  and remember that in this case,  ignorance is NOT bliss.  :)

I think it could still be "baby fat".   18 is still pretty young!   People often keep that rounded face look until their mid 20s or so...   don't worry too much about it,  just revel in your youth.
