Motivation So what turned on your "going to lose weight button" Jun 23 2012

Awesome job on the 72 pound loss. That's truly amazing. (Ignore the incredibly lame azz troll :P)

Like the earlier poster, the moment I knew I had reached the end of the rope was realizing that even my most forgiving baggy pants were tight...really tight. I discovered, horrifyingly enough, that I had gained about 15 pounds in a matter of two months. Apparently that's what happens when I decide to take a "break." A day turns into a weekend, a weekend into a week, a week into a month....and so forth. Here I am again. Good luck all.

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and wisdom. After I wrote that I thought how overdramatic it sounds...I mean I don't really want to die obviously (and I hate to be a drama queen) but last night was SO horrible. Yes- I did break it off, but he agreed it was for the best too. I still feel incredibly sad, like I can't quite catch my breath or I might start crying. But I do know you are all right--life goes on. I just hate to be alone...and he really was (is?) my best friend. He wants to be friends and hang out and stuff...but I just don't know how that will feel. I don't even know if he's just saying that he wants to be friends and maybe he hopes that we can be friends with benefits or what (he kind of joked about that yesterday...seriously).

So thank you all again, you have made me feel a little better- to be reminded that there is life after this break up.

Motivation Study stress!! Any tips on how to be good during exams? Apr 04 2012

I like to munch while I study too. What I try to do is set aside specific times to get up and get a snack or have a meal or whatever- and eat it away from my desk. I plan on something healthy and filling, most importantly- then I won't think about eating or have cravings. Then I get back to work. Sometimes I chew sugarless gum to work through study tension :)

Weight Loss any women 5'6.5 whats your ideal weight? Mar 27 2012

I'm 5'6.5" as well, around 150 right now but aiming for 130ish. My lowest adult weight was 128, I looked and felt terrific. I had almost no belly roll (just a teeny tiny bit, and this was post baby) and looked fit. I've always wanted to be in the 120's but with my medium frame low 130's works best I guess. Anyways, it doesn't matter the number as long as you feel good about how you look!

I read this article awhile back and too found it to be depressing and de-motivating. Why work our butts off just to end up back where we started? I've been back up and down the scale from low 130's to 180 and usually get stuck around 145 - 150. It's terribly sad to think that I could reach my goal and then no matter what I do, I have to regain.

Unfortunately- I do think there is some truth in the article. Just look at the boards here- how many people are eating 1200 - 1400 calories and exercising quite a bit and stop losing weight? It just doesn't make any sense. Other people (including myself) swear by zig zagging or "cheat meals" to bump up stagnate weight loss- I eat 1400 ish all week, don't lose an ounce, then, eat 4,000 calories one day and boom! Lose two pounds. That doesn't make any sense either! It's very irksome. Of course that isn't even a surefire thing. Weight loss is so individualized that what works for one person won't work at all for another. And what works now won't necessarily work forever. There's no magic bullet :( It's a constant game of trial and error.

Hey last,

Nice job on dropping all the poundage :) I can really relate to what you are saying since I lost 35ish pounds last year too but I still fretted over my thighs and stomach. Someone mentioned a good bra and I have to agree, maybe try a bathing suit with padding? Victoria's Secret sells them (their Bombshell line is very HOT & adds 2 cup sizes); I find that if my chest has a little more "oomph" I feel like it sort of overrules my poochy-belly. Also, don't worry about being perfect- no one is! Don't be afraid of minor flaws; they always  look so much worse to you than anyone else, I guarantee it. Enjoy the fruits of your labor - you have every right to show off and feel confident!

Always a fun topic :)

  • Being a good role model
  • Sexy lingerie and swimwear, cute skirts and dresses...
  • Feeling like the best version of me!
  • Being able to wear cute heels without my feet getting so sore (although, I have 25 pounds to lose, so not sure if that will take care of it)
  • Running as far and as fast as I want
  • My wedding...feeling beautiful and confident
  • Sending my fiancee "fun" pics to his phone

Mostly vanities, I gotta admit...but what's the fun of losing weight without getting to revel in your hotness??

Weight Loss Tips Everyone Can Benefit From :) Feb 22 2012

For me a big part of it is remembering that I'm human and screw up sometimes. You know- some days you're just going to eat a figurative horse, and there's no need to beat yourself up over it. Get right back to your healthy behaviors the next day...don't allow one slip-up to turn into a week-long binge fest.

And too- maybe change how you even perceive "bad" days/foods. Recognize that it's human to eat less than nutritious foods; you just need to accept you can't eat them all the time. "Moderation" is key. Food isn't bad unless you abuse it.

Amen. To everyone's comments. I can gain weight super easily - 10 pounds in a month! - but I know exactly why it's happening. It takes a lot of overeating to become overweight, even though it seemingly "creeps up" on you. I can eat an entire pizza in a sitting and a whole box of cookies on top of that. Of course I gain weight. I just tell myself it's very temporary and I'll "eat better" tomorrow ...or whenever... and lose it then.

The binge -and- diet cycle plays a part here. Many overweight people do attempt to diet...1200 calories per day or other silly ploys like cabbage soups plans and whatnot...doesn't last because it's not sustainable...hungry and undernourished, we  binge on junk foods and Bam! Weight is gained. Back to the ultra-restrictive diet plan we go. So we feel unfulfilled, and we can truthfully say, "I hardly eat anything!" and yet the undeniable proof that we actually do is right there in plain view.

I don't think it's a very good idea. Seems like it would just set you up for disappointment...those VS models have very strict diet/ fitness regimes they abide by to be runway ready, and of course we know about Photoshop. I know I will never have a VS model body and staring at a picture of one really doesn't inspire healthy thoughts or behaviors.

Motivation Has anyone seen my willpower? Dec 30 2011

Original Post by suzyannie:

I guess you can call that a method to stay on track: a commitment to health and being mindful of the calories and nutrients I am eating.

I agree with this post; losing weight and sustaining that loss is more a commitment than willpower alone. Yes, you will have those tough days, maybe even calorie-bomb days, but if you're committed to your goal you'll get right back on track.

Also, I don't know about you, but eating carby/sugary stuff in the morning makes me crave junk food so bad I can't stand it. I've found that eating protein/ whole foods keeps me satisfied and full and I don't even think about food or snacking! Unfortunately following the holidays I've had too many sweet treats laying around but now that they are gone I can get back on track :)

Yeah, start slow. But don't beat yourself up if you slip up! It happens...the best thing you can do is keep trying. I just wrote on another thread, even if it's one day out of the week you manage to eat healthily, at least you're one day closer to your goal...Good luck!

Ughhh...the junk food. Man that's a hard one to overcome. I have the same issue, and I've found that eating junk ----> wanting more junk food...ie cravings, etc. It's really hard, but the best thing to do is drop the processed junk. I've always been really suspicious towards salads and veggies, like eating that stuff would make me feel too deprived or something. But truthfully, eating all-around whole, unprocessed foods will make you feel fuller and get rid of the cravings. If you eat a good number of calories (like a 200-500 calorie deficit) of real food you will be full and still lose weight. Just try for a day. Tell yourself, you can have some of your favorites tomorrow but test it out. I've been pleasantly surprised how easy it is.

Weight Loss Am I the Only Quitter? Dec 09 2011

Your post made me laugh, not at you but because I'm sure, like,  99% of people here can relate too. Yes, I know what you're going through as I am also have issues with being unable to "quit." Huh, sounds like we're talking about meth or crack or something but honestly, certain foods/drinks (looking at you, ice cold can of soda) feel just that bad.

Anyhoo I agree with others' comments about motivation, etc. In addition, I think you also need to find out just what is right for you and your body, as in, what foods and when. I think eating whole, unprocessed foods and drinking water is best but a few months ago, the very idea of eating veggies seemed impossible so I tried to just limit my calorie intake. I'd still eat foods I loved (read: processed, high sugar and/or fat content) in small amounts. But that didn't really work; my body needed actual nutrients even though I thought I felt full on 1500 calories worth of junk.  Recently I've eaten whole foods, and what a difference. I feel really full and don't crave sugar and junk at all despite high stress (finals, etc.) Find what works for YOU.

I have had so many "false starts" I've lost track. The best thing to do is pick yourself up and keep going even through moments of feeling like, "Forget this- there's just no way" because even on that one day out of the week you do eat well, hey, that's one day closer to your goal! Maybe just try to string together a day or two more that you eat/behave more heathily. And don't be so hard on yourself :)

Hi everyone! I hear y'all. Regaining hard lost pounds SUCKSYell HARDCORE

I was down to 140 from 178 this past summer....I started in Feb. this year and pretty easily got into the 140s. By June I was fighting hard to break into the 130s...then I did...for a microsecond. I weighed 139.5 :P

Now, after many bumbling, frantic, and often irrational months of binging and trying to get on track and then just not, I weigh in at 162.5. I think that's with a little water retention, but still. 20 pounds is too much. All my clothes are just ill-fitting and uncomfortable. And I feel awful.

The important thing for us to remember is to keep going! We have to keep trying. There's a saying, time passes whether you make healthy choices or not, so why not choose to be healthy? Eventually six months will pass and you could either be thirty pounds heavier or thirty pounds lighter (although for me I could easily be sixty pounds, as I have been known to gain 10 pounds in a month! lol) Which would you choose?? Be strong.

This is kind of funny in a way, not that your issues are funny but I feel the same way sometimes! I'm on hear quite a bit (several times a day) looking for every little scrap of wisdom I can glean from the "pros." One thing I don't do is log anything (besides my weight) on here, the tools are great but I don't always have convenient computer access.

So, as bierorama brought up, I write every thing down in a notebook I keep in my purse. That's enough for me, I don't have a burning need to see the statistical breakdowns in my food selections and nutrients, etc. I would go nuts too! Perhaps you could try removing some of the compulsion by utilizing other tracking methods.

For me it was exercise first. I didn't count calories back in those days; simply cutting portions worked wonders. I became more diligent about my calorie intake once I had lost a significant amount of weight.  But I always walked, 5 days a week, no excuses. I know the biggest part of weight loss is decreasing calorie intake (and my exercise routine is by no means hardcore) but exercise is a really good motivator in that I think of how I'm building muscles, which will make me leaner and "harder" in a way that cutting calories alone won't.
