You won't undo 6 days of good behaviour with one day of indulgance. Having said that, don't pig out, but plan what you are going to eat. Fill your plate with as many veggies as you'd like, and fill up on them, and take only small portions of meat, bread, pasta, or whatever other high calorie goodies might be served. You can even plan for a small peice of dessert, if you'd like. Just make sure you account for it in your food log, and eat it last, so you won't be hungry enough to pig out on it! |

A word of advice... lose the fat clothes. You have to make the decision that you will NOT be taking a step backward, that that extra weight is gone for good. I didn't save any of my clothes for more than a few months. Off they went to goodwill. |

All the things you listed are not things seen by a casual observer. And when you see them clinically, they are anything but subtle. In fact, they jump right out and grab you! The subtle tell tale signs I'm talking about are behavioural, that I probably wouldn't see in the office, but that someone else with an ED or is recovering from an ED might notice, and someone like myself might not. |

I am wondering, what are the 'little things' you notice when someone has an ED? I am sure many of my patients do (I am a dental hygieinist), but I can't say for sure. What are subtle yet tell talel signs I can look for? |

@ aquilinag: I'm 5'4". My original goal weight was 150, but then I discovered that 150 is still overweight for someone my height. I decided to go for 135 then. These last 10 lbs are a bugger! I need to get back to rigorous portion control to get the last of it off, and I'm just bnot feeling it right now. Perhaps once the weather wars,ms up and I can get outside more. I am very active, but what can I say, I love to eat! And today we celebrated my hubby's b-day by getting Chinese food. I dont think I'll even weigh myself tomorrow! I'll just have to pound the water to me for a few days, and then get back on. I was off the last full week of Feb, nad I really behaved myself diet-wise, and was very active; gym 6 days a week, some days for tgwo classes, plus swimming three times, plus skating twice, plus hockey ponce. My goal was to break into the 130's, but it never got there. Frustrating! Now we're into March break, and are planning a couple of days away with the kids. Eating healthy won't be easy those days, and forget about the gym. And then my sister is coming for the end of the week and we are going out to a nice restaurant while she's here, plus I'll be hosting Sunday dinner (good, because I can have all healthy stuff, but there will also be a delicious dessert! cheesecake, by request). So... those last 10 lbs are going to continue to be elusive for at least another week! |

It's TTofM, so hopefully I'm packing a couple of lbs of water weight. Thanks for the welcome! I am pretty active, w high impact gym classes (5-7 times a wk) like combat, attack, as well as spin, pump and circuit classes. I swim 2-3 times a wk, and play hockey once a wk. Do we have a specific weigh in day? My official day is usually Friday. |

Just the group I've been looking for!
I started at 256 in Oct 2009, and this morning weighed in at 146. This, after a very naughty day yesterday, of birthday cake, chips, pizza and ice cream. I am sure the sodium is what did the most damage, as I weighed in Thursday morning at 141.5. I am 5'4'' and 42 years old. My goal weight is 135. My ULTIMATE goal weight is 128. Right now I will be thrilled to see 139! I have been stuck in the 140s for a long time. SW 146 GW 135 UltimateGW 128 |

My stats are similar to yours. I started out at 256, and I'm 5'4". My current weight is 142. I'd like to lose at least another 7 lbs, but 15 would be better. I am 42 years old. I have WAY more loose skin than you. My skin has also been stretched by three pregnancies, and two of my kids were 10+ lbs! Not pretty. But loose floppy skin sure beats a big sack full of fat! You are young, so your skin is more elastic than mine, but chances are, you probably will still be a bit loose, even if you lose more weight.

Even though 1300 seems low, remember, you can't make something out of nothing. If you burn more than you eat, you WILL lose, eventually. I sometimes think too much is made of 'undereating'(I put that in quotation marks because I don't really believe this is undereating for someone like myself; a 5'4'' female with a sedentary job). When I started my weightloss journey, I was eating about 1200 average a day (some days I was around 1400). I accounted for every single calorie, and they were all nutritious; little if any processed foods, and very little in the way of simple carbs (sugar, breads, potatoes, rice). I didn't drink a single calorie. Zero alcohol, I cut as much salt as possible, no condiments... I lost 80 lbs eating this way. However... I couldn't eat that way forever. Once I started at the gym, I had to increase my calories. I probably average 1600-1800 a day now, and I aim for 5 days a week at the gym. I usually do 1 hr classes, and some days I do 2 hrs. I also swim 2-3 times a week, walk when I can, and play hockey once a week. I know it sounds busy, but did you know the latest recommendation is that every adult get at least one hour of moderate exercise a day? When I started this journey, I thought I'd aim for exercise 3xs a week. Who has time for more than that? Turns out we need to make the time for it, in order to be healthy. It doesn't have to be the gym every day; a good brisk walk, shovelling the driveway, fast paced yard work, kicking a soccer ball with the kids, taking them skating, playing Wii, or X-Box kinect... there are lots of ways of incorporating your exercise with time with your kids. I have lost 114 lbs so far, and am only 7 lbs away from my goal weight. The last 10 lbs is the hardest!!! Keep at it, and don't give up. This has to be a lifestyle change for it to work for you. |

Congrats on the weight loss! You've come a long way, but it sounds like it's time to change things up. Are you counting your calories? How many do you consume on a daily basis? I think the first thing I would do is ditch the protein shakes and trade up to vegetables and maybe some fruit. Protein shakes aren't very nutritious, especially compared to real food! They are full of artificial flavors and chemicals. Also, why the caffine, bronkaid and aspirin? You are better off going au natural. Ephedra is risky, isn't it? And two full aspirin a day can be very hard on your stomach, over time. My mother has lifelong stomach trouble due to long term aspirin use. As far as lifting goes, you can find lots of good websites and books on weights. Go for it! I started lifting about 8 months ago now, and I love it. Wish I had the time to do more. It did increase my apatite, but the good news is, you can eat pretty much as many veggies (aside from root veggies, corn and legumes) that you'd like. I would also suggest reviewing your time on the treadmill. Ask, are you really pushing yourself? Are you going so fast that you sweat like a pig? That you are out of breath? That you can't possibly go another step by the time you're done? If not, you might want to pick up the pace. Having said that, remember, weight loss is 80% diet, 20% exercise. Counting your calories (and eating real food) is your best bet, in my opinion. Kelley |

Yes, I can. Do I struggle sometimes? Yes. I am well over a year into this lifestyle change, and the other day, I walked past a Tim Horton's and I could smell the donuts baking. I thought about the times I would get my husband to buy a dozen donuts and I'd eat 4 for breakfast. I thought 'could I do that today?' and the answer was YES, I totally could walk in there, order 4 donuts and eat em all. Would I feel sick afterwards? Probably. But they sure would taste good going down. Most days, I am not tempted. The days I am, I try to remind myself of why I'm doing this, and you know what? It is so true; nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels. When I think back to how I felt at 256 lbs, physically and mentally, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I do deprive myself of foods I'd like to eat, mainly because I truely feel like I am an addict. If I start eating those foods on a regualr basis, even in small portions, I will start down a slippery slope. It's easier just to avoid those 'trigger foods' as much as possible. I didn't only give up junk to lose weight; I gave it up because of health reasons. None of those junk foods that I loved were any good for me at all; loaded with saturated fats, sodium, artificial flavours and preservatives, they can't be doing anyone's body any good in any amounts. So, yes, I eat delicious foods every day. In adequate amounts (most days). Treats are few and far between; truely treats, and if I cheat, it's not for a bag of chips or a chocolate bar, it's for a peice of my mom's homemade chocolate cake with boiled frosting, or fine restaurant meal. THAT is worth going over my daily alotment of calories! |

| Weight Loss | Were you raised on a healthy diet? | Feb 06 2011 14:42 (UTC) |

I was raised on mostly homemade meals, but htey were largely meat and potatoes. Veggies usually consisted of a can of something. To this day, I cannot eat veggies out of a can. As I got older, I developed a taste for junk. Especially for salty and savory stuff; chips and dip, breads, crackers, biscuits... not that I'd turn down sweets, but I'd rather have a big plate of nachos. I just derived so much satisfaction and pleasure from eating. And it got out of control. I love healthy food too, not just junk. I know how to cook, as does my hubby, and we both enjoy a variety of ethnic dishes. For the most part, my kids enjoy healthy food too. I feel bad, that my unhealthy eating habits may have predisposed my children to developing unhealthy habits themselves. I only hope I didn't make the changes too late, and they will follow my example.

| Weight Loss | Why is 1200 the magic number? | Feb 06 2011 02:45 (UTC) |

I started out with a 1200 cal target. I did this for several months before increasing my intake to 1500 a day. I have lost 114 lbs to date, and am 7 lbs from my goal weight. I am very active (gym 5 xs a week, pool 2-3), but if I consistently eat above 1500, I stop losing.
I needed that positive reinforcement the quick loss gave me. I used 1200 cal, because that was what the tools said a woman at my goal weight would require on inactive days. I figured that if I ate at that rate, once I reach my goal weight, the loss would just stop. Now I know that I require more cal on active days, so I do eat more, but on sedentary days, i do try to eat at 1200-1400. |

Don't worry so much about how he feels about your body; how do YOU feel about it? Are you happy with how you look? How you feel? Are you comfortable with maintaining it the way it is now? If we try to change ourselves to please other people, we aren't always happy with the results. Especially when those changes aren't in our best interest! |

I am tired of hearing this myself. If they could see my without my shirt on, they'd see where I'm hiding that extra 10lbs I could easily afford to lose. And a 10 lb loss will only take me to a BMI of 22.7; hardly skeletal. Because I've already lost 114 lbs, I assume they are saying this because I look prettydurn good compared to how I was. But that doesn't mean I am done yet! |

Came across this thread, and just had to comment on it, even though it is months old.
I get this ALL THE TIME. I have lost 112 lbs, and though I am within a normal BMI now, at 24.8 I barely fall within the normal range. My goal weight is 135, and my ultimate goal weight is 128 (BMIs of 23.2 and 22 respectively). Neither of my goal weights are particularly low, and I don't believe for one minute that I will look scrawny, or sickly at these weights. When people comment on my weight loss (which is often, as in my field of work I see people every day who may not have seen me for 4 months, 6 months, or a year), they almost always ask if I am where I want to be, at which point I tell them, 'no, actually, I have a few more pounds to go'. Everyone says something along these lines: 'You don't have to lose any more weight!' 'Where will you lose weight from?' 'You will be too thin if you lose any more weight', and of course 'Don't lose too much weight!'. Also, when they first see me, they often comment along the lines of 'You are fading away', or 'wasting away to nothing', or 'be careful or you'll disappear altogether!'. I also often get 'you look wonderful!' which is far preferable to everything else. My husband gets it all the time too. He has lost 47lbs, and his BMI is 30.4. He is technically still obese! I will say that he doesn't look it, but he still does have a spare tire. He is large framed, adn quite muscular, so he'll probably always be at the upper end of his healthy BMI once he achieves it, but for all his co workers to be telling him he'll look sick if he loses more weight is ridiculous! He wears scrubs at work, which hide lots, but he certainly doesn't look like he's fading away, and he is told that all the time by his co workers. I am beginning to wonder if it's becuase they are all girls and many of them want to lose weight but haven't taken any action on it yet. |

Thanks for the laugh! For the record, I too think this eating for blood type thing is a bunch of bull. One more fad diet to throw on the scrap heap. There may be some studies that show a connection between blood type and digestion of nutrients, but I would say they are probably very subtle effects. I'm AB as well, and I'm not supposed to eat chicken? And I've been practically living off chicken since starting my weight loss journey! And still managed to lose 112 lbs so far, dropped my cholesterol level into the basement, dropped my resting BP to 105/55, my resting heart rate to the low 60's... Just think of what I could have achieved had I been eating for my blood type! Having said that, perhaps during evolution, it was a lot harder for people with AB blood to eat properly enough to ensure their survival, and that is why there are so few of us. |
