| Young Calorie Counters | HOW do I stop counting calories? | Jul 15 2011 03:53 (UTC) |

Hi zombers, I know exactly how you feel. Near the end of my recovery, I was so sick and tired of obsessing over numbers and having my whole life and day dictated by thinking about food and calories. So I made an effort to stop counting, and I did, and it surely helped me recover from my ED. First of all, if you weigh/measure all your food, keep away all the scales and measuring cups in your kitchen. There's no need to measure your portions just to get the exact amount of calories! It's time consuming and pedantic. Secondly, instead of eating foods that you only know the calories of, venture into that territory of foods without labels (such as restaurant/food court/parent cooked food) and don't try to find out what the ingredients are so that you won't think about the calories. Thirdly, learn to enjoy the food you're eating instead of trying to figure out how many calories are in it. Just choose anything you want on the menu! If you find your mind wandering back to calories, you gotta stop yourself. Its called 'metacognition' when you think about thinking, which is a skill I've learnt to develop. When you realise that you're thinking about calories, stop yourself. Don't plan your meals in advance, and just eat regularly. Since you're still in recovery, I wouldn't suggest intuitive eating because sometimes the skewed ED might tell you that you're not hungry for the whole day, and then you end up not eating for the whole day xD So the best is to stick with 6 regular meals, but without knowing the value of each. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I thought I'd just share with you how I stopped during recovery! |

I find that it is quite common for people who suffer(ed) from an ED to have kind of like a 'perfectionist' sort of temperament. I remember when I was a kid, I always made sure that all my coloured pens will be put back in the order they were packaged in xD But mine wasn't to the point where the sequence that I ate was according to colour. I've heard some people do that... |

I've gone through this too :P But sadly, unless you wanna go to China and break your shin bones to get surgical metallic implants that will hurt you for the rest of your life, there's not much you can do to make you grow taller. I asked my doctor and he said that it all boils down to genetics. I'm 18 this year and I'm still a shortie :( I was hoping there were growth pills on the market too - but apparently none of them have actually been proven, or have really scary side effects. We just gotta accept our height as it is! You could say that we are "fun sized" xD |

"but my thighs have become really noticeably larger and flabbier and my legs a lot 'thicker'." This could be your ED talking. At around 40kgs, I don't think your thighs could be 'flabby' at all! You have to remember that with anorexia, your perception of yourself is distorted. To clear it up, your body will distribute its weight evenly. Have you ever seen a person with a really skinny top but huge bottom? (I certainly haven't) So don't let any irrational thoughts keep you from recovery :) And also, I was told that the type of food doesn't specifically go to a certain body part. So I guess the statement 'It'll go straight to your hips!' isn't exactly true haha. weight distribution is different for everyone, hence the 'pear' or 'apple' body shapes for women. |

all of those points are so absolutely true, especially the one about picking food based on its caloric value than taste. Here's a few more:
And i think some people may have read my OP wrongly. I am not implying that CC will lead to an eating disorder, but I am quite sure that it is one of the most significant contributors. Also, is it really 'narcisisstic' and 'juvenile' to regret a past action that has impacted me still and for the rest of my life? I know the calorie value of almost every food, and I don't think that can be ever be 'managed'. I don't mean that I can't stop CC-ing. In fact, I don't log my meals everyday. But I still know the numerical amount that I have consumed, and I still suffer from the guilt that comes with that knowledge. I'm not blaming CC for my ED, I'm just stating an opinion that I would much rather not have done it in the first place. |

It's always the guys isn't it? :P They don't seem to understand that certain comments can really cut deep... If I finish a meal, my dad will always exclaim 'WOW! You finished the whole thing by yourself!' which makes me feel extremely guilty and regretful. Now that I think about it, I tend to avoid eating too much around him... |

@Dani135 - Maybe your rolls didn't rise because it wasn't self-raising :P Next time try adding baking soda ^^ And thanks for the replies guys. Seems like wholemeal just makes the product denser, which I don't mind unless it's a chiffon cake or something haha. So I'll probs experiment a wholemeal-stevia kind of cookie thing and see how it goes. Wish me luck!! |

So are all of them Definitely 1 fo 1 substitution?
And does it change the outcome of the product? |

So that's still exercising without protein though :P today I went for a run at around 3pm, and I had a meat salad for lunch. I felt really sluggish when I ran and definitely did not feel the same as I did on Friday. Hmm... I wonder if there's some scientific explanation for this. I'd like to know! |

Thanks guys for all the suggestions! The CC palate one is a really clever concept since it links right back to here with the nutritional info! And also, katheats seems to be really obsessed with oatmeal lol xD I also found one called Honey What's Cooking? I just find the ones with nutritional info more convenient so that I don't have to manually add all the calories out before I decide whether or not I should even use the recipe :P Anybody know any asian ones? Asian food is yum! |

I don't have abusive parents but I did have an ED, and I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. But I'd just like to let you know that that's what a community is for - especially this support thread :) So the people here are always here to talk and feel free to message any one of us if you'd like someone else to talk to. I think that it's great that you're being sensible about your eating, because having an ED would just make everything worse. I'm not sure how to react in these circumstances, but I've heard that there is some medication to deal with the symptoms of schizophrenia? |

If the calories were absorbed, would you actually have logged down the ants? O.o Nevertheless, it's best not to get obsessive about miniscule amounts of calories. It's an unhealthy habit that can lead to serious eating disorders. Please becareful :) |

@youndme - But don't you want kids? Or are you not planning to have any more? Personally for me, I am definitely worried about being infertile. I made one mistake in my life by having an ED and losing my period, and I definitely hope that I won't have to pay the price by being unable to have children. |

Thanks guys for all your interesting replies! I do agree with all of those later afternoon exercisers. Or maybe because we're just used to it? I know a lot of people who get up at 5 in the morning to go for a run! (I could never have that discipline haha) But yeah, thanks caro for explaining that with the red meat. It does make sense. And I think that was the reason why I felt so 'springy' yesterday. I wouldn't mind going vegeterian (or pesceterian) as I definitely enjoyed that feeling yesterday, but that would be quite hard as my family are meat lovers... |

Haha that's a good point about the carbs, but I didn't only consume carbs today. I did have protein from beans, nuts and vegetables. I'm just wondering if meat actually makes your body 'lag' a bit haha! |

To get your period back your body has to be at an optimum weight where it feels 'sure' that you'll be able to maintain so that your reproductive organs can function properly again. But even when you do get your period back, it might be quite irregular as losing it disrupts the cycle entirely. My period is still extremely irregular (I got it back last year in february for 2 weeks, then never got it again till this december; went regular till about april where it hasn't come back yet) But i am at a healthy weight, so I know that my cycle is still adjusting. However, I think in your case, you need to get to a higher weight first in order for your body to even recognise that it can start menstruating again. |

Hey there, I have to say a big WELL DONE on overcoming your fears and eating that Cornetto! Moreover, you didn't try to recompensate after! That's fantastic and really really strong of you :) It's a great feeling isn't it? To emerge victorious after a long and frustrating debate with that annoying ED voice inside your head. I've recovered from my ED already, but I still remember having huge debates with it all day. That's one of the things about ED. It makes you think about food all the time, but when you are about to eat, it makes you feel all bad about it! Your positive mentality is awesome, and I think that you're a great inspiration to others in recovery. Keep on with this attitude and you will reach your goal! Just to remind you though - chewing and spitting isn't any better than purging. It's still a destructive ED habit and does not benefit recovery in any way. The point of recovery is to learn to have a healthy relationship with food and to try to eat "normally". You wouldn't really want to have a person sitting opposite you at dessert spitting out their cake in their napkin would you? :P Well anyway, I wish you all the best for your recovery. You seem to be on the right path. If CC is a place where you can vent and feel better, then do so! But just try not to obsess over calories by logging literally every single bite you take. Learn to estimate and not to be ruled by food/calories :) |

| Weight Gain | Now I love chocolate, what? | Jun 11 2011 02:17 (UTC) |

Don't feel bad about it! Chocolate actually has a compound in it that releases a natural "feel-good" chemical effect on your brain. It's the same thing that your brain gets when you're in love! That's why people always get that really pleasurable effect after eating chocolate. It's not a bad thing, as long as you don't eat chocolate as a substitute for meals. Dark chocolate has anti-oxidants in it too that is said to help combat potential cancer cells. Chocolate is good! Lindt is the best. Yum :)

You might be overestimating your calories. Do you just give rough estimates of your meals? Maybe you might even need to up your calorie intake. Also, if you're trying to gain, you shouldn't be doing intensive exercise. But at the same time, doing that little bit of exercise may have caused you to sweat which is loss of water weight. |
