Afternoon everyone!  I'm not sure if anyone will remember me but I used to post on here almost daily during recovery from my ED.

Fab to see you all doing so well but most of these gaining eats look like what I eat now...only way healthier haha!!  Just want to say to you guys, GO FOR IT!  Nothing is better than being free of an eating disorder, eating 1000 calories meals some days and just snacking on toast and fruit other days is normal in life, there is no need to be so rigid.

Sorry to see some of you still posting here when I was!  That must suck to still be posting metaculous meal plans.  Just eat what you want!  I know it is a lot easier said than done, but pushing through those barriers really does make all the difference.  Good luck xx

Weight Gain recovery confusion! Oct 03 2010

Heya d/w you are not the only person who has gone through this - you sound just like me a few months ago and it was a confusing time!  1500 calories is NOT enough full stop.  The mental barrier of eating more at each meal is very tough to break but once you do, it all becomes a lot easier believe me.  When I fist upped from 1500 to 2000 I was sooo anxious and became really stressy and throwing things and stuff haha but they day after and from then onwards it just became so so much easier.  You need to increase your calories and it is up to you whether you want to decrease physical activity.  Now I don't even count calories, I just eat healthily and what I fancy whenever, its all so much easier when you're not underweight (I know its hard to think about 'maintaining' at your stage but there is no need to plan everything once you've gained to a healthy weight)

If you think the stretching and yoga is healthy for your mind and well being there is no reasn why you shouldn't keep doing it, unless it feels like you HAVE to do it (ed talking basically) even if you don't feel like it.

I know the feeling of omg what if I don't gain 'muscle and tone' and just look like a deflated slug, but the truth is stretching and stuff won't change your body composition.  Maybe you could join a gym to focus on resistance training but only if you are CERTAIN that it won't become any sort of fuel for your ED, which gyms can become unfortunately.

So today, right now or whenever you get this post, up the calories!  Just do it!  You sound like an intelligent girl and YOU WANT to do this its just the ED voice thats being a pain in the arse.  Carbs at dinner are normal for 'normal people' and normal people would also have a bowl of cereal later or even a dessert as well.  Sorry I've just realised how long this response is!

p.s. I'm doing teacher training at uni atm!  Are you doing primary or secondary?

Hi, looks like you are already doing a good job.  I recovered completely on close to 3000 a day roughly so I agree you need to up the calories a bit.

If I were you, I would definitely include liquid calories (like swimfan suggested) maybe along with lunch - have a glass of chocolate milk wit the tuna cheese sammie ...and a handful of dried fruit for dessert?  Or a yogurt with nuts or some greek yogurt with biscuits, anything desserty really.

Don't worry about where these calories come from (protein, carbs etc) as long as you get them in.  I used to worry about this like crazy thinking hmmm...I should probably have more protein and not that extra blob of chocolate sauce, but it really didn't make any difference when I chose the chocolate sauce over the tin of tuna...except making me a bit happier :)

It might reassure you to know that when I stopped fussing about getting tons of protein and learnt to relax, I honestly became happierwith my body as I gained and I still retained a lot of muscle.

Try to to fret about the 'binge' feeling too much hun, you are gaining weight and should be able to eat whatever the hell you want, the majority of the population indulges in eating a lot a few times a week anyway so you have full permission to go ahead and eat anything.

mashed_tatties, amen to that!  I too can relate so d/w too much you're not the only one with this problem.  i've found the most helpful thing is interaction with others - try and arrange to meet up with mates for a chat/shopping as often as possible or get a job where social interaction is key.  When you are chatting to others, your brain obviously isn't thinking about food.

When a lot of people are bored, they will eat just for something to do! (Now I'm not promoting this, but if you had an ED, you are so used to being in control that bordom won't just let you eat so instead you think about what you will eat).  I've tried it and there is no harm in eating out of boredom although it does sometimes mean you are not hungry for family meals and such so they may prove more of a struggle then.

Even putting your ipod on and going for a walk or relaxing with a magasine helps because your brain in concentrating (subconciously)on the song blaring.  Well I hope some of this is helpful to you! ;P

muchlinski....... no offecnce but that dietician sounds a bit ehhh??!!! and what you ate today sounds like something for someone to lose weight not gain!!  i kinda had the same problem with my first dietician, she told me to eat healthy and said that exercising 4 hours a day was fine as long as i ate healthy..... so we dumped her! if you enjoy soy eat it! your not going to recover any better if you dont eat what you want cause its just gonna make you more scared cause you'll be saying oh no can't have that the dietician says its bad!

I agree!  Ity sounds a lot like a weird maintenence plan haha.  beebeckee, I seriously wonder how some of these dietitions even qualified, mine was like 'oh yeah exercise your butt off at a bmi of 14' :/ uhhh..ye right thank you for aiding my death dear dietition!  What were the bars like?  Because holyshmo on that link you posted they look awesome!  I will have to make..if i can fork out the money for all those ingredients that is (damn limited student loan!)

I think it is very importatnt for us all to eat the foods that we genuinely like (obviously finding ways to make them more caloriific) so that when we reach tour goal weights we're not suddenly stuck and confused about what we are 'allowed' to eat now.

Oh and heeeya Annie! aka( pepperminttea) well done girly your meals n stuff all looks lush, overnight oats are always the way to go yum yum

I don't think you should have really written a letter to him, guys at the gym tend to be up their own a**es anyway even if they seem friendly etc. I mean he commented that you have a 'hot body' to your face which shows he is confident and a bit cocky in my opinion like he can just comment on girls appearences without getting to know them first.

I am so sorry that you don't have friends atm, I know how easy it is to lose friends along the way and can totally see how, especially with an ED you could end up with none :(.  The gym isn't really the best place to meet people though, even if they seem like minded(into fitness) because they go there to work out not to have chatter with strangers so any chatter will probably not come to much anyway and will either just be banter or you might make the odd aquaintence.

Do you have any old friends who you havn't spoken to in a long while?  Maybe give one a ring and arrange to meet up?  It may be scary to begin with but its a foundation way to build stronger friendships upon.  Or you could start a part time job which is very social and has a lot of employees for you to become friendly with.  Anyway, I'd just forget about this guy, chances are he isn't spending his time worrying about seeing you so just try and relax and ignore him next time you're at the gym.  If he talks to you then talk back if he doesn't then his loss eh?

Whatever you do and however you feel...keep the calories up!  I know from 1st hand experience.  When I went away to uni, I became really stressed and restricted my calories down from 2500(I had been gaining) to about 1000-1500 and my hair started coming out even when I brushed my hands through it!  When I started eating properly again, it continued to be fragile first of all but now, still eating 2500-3000 it is as strong as ever and growing back.  I don't think you need to increase for your hair, unless you are not gaining enough per week but at a low weight, too much exercise will but stress on your already weakend body and bodily stress means your hair is more likely to fall out.  Stick to light, gentle exercise and try and wash it every other day rather than every day (I find this helps!)  Eating a lot of oily fish in your recovery as well as mono fats like those in avocados should help improve the strength of your hair and make it look shiny.  Good luck!

becbecl, thanks lovely!  But my friends honestly thought I did weigh 7.10!  It shocked me a little bit too tbh but they overestimated all of us so I guess they are a little clueless haha.

spiritriser, thanks!  Don't know about you guys but I gained in my face first of all so I automatically looked healthier.  At 100lbs, my bmi is 17.2 which isn't crazy underweight but I feel like I've learnt so much now that my target weight is 110lbs (bmi of 18.9) which seems healthy for me :)

Snap!  I'm 5'4 and only 2lbs less than you now and I too am having a bit of a scary time thinking about the whole extra stone we should be gaining!  Thanks platymus that was really insightful, like the weight is going to go everywhere once we are at a healthy bmi, these stupid thoughts that it is all going to accumulate as belly fat or whatever are rather ED related I think.  My mum is 8stone and 5'4 and she looks really slim/healthy so I guess any changes can only be positive and make us look healthier.  No one has ever looked huge at a bmi of 18 so d/w!!! x
