Weight Loss how many calories should I eat a day? Feb 05 2013
20:20 (UTC)

i like to use this calculator.

I have to agree with the other posters and suggest that you exercise. It'll help you reach your goal, and if you do go over your calorie per day it won't be such a big deal.

Exercise will help increase your metabolism which is what everyone wants.

Since you've stated you don't have a lot of time to workout, I suggest HIIT (high intensity interval training) combined with circuit training (weights, minimal rest with some aerobic exercise combined).

As for HIIT, start off with a small amount of time. Do a 5 minute warm up, then you start a 5 minute hiit.

example.

5 minute warm up : marching

HIIT
5:00 - running in spot
4:30 - marching
4:00 - running in spot
3:30 - marching
3:00 - running in spot
2:30 - marching
2:00 - running in spot
1:30 - marching
1:00 - running in spot
0:30 - marching

After this cooldown by walking around, stretching. Generally HIIT is 30 seconds of pushing hard, then 30 or rest/slow movement. This will help greatly to improve your cardio and increase your metabolism.
You don't have to just run in spot either, it can be any type of cardio you want. Can do jumping jacks, mountain climbers, ski side to side, anything that increases your heart rate.

Don't do HIIT every day though, as it can fatigue you very easily, so 2-3 times a week.

for circuit training, if you don't have any weights you can use body weight exercises. push ups. lunges, squats, bridges, torso twists, etc.

if you like videos to watch, you can follow Zuzanna and her ZWOW's. I find these fatigue me quickly because they're basically HIIT style workouts, but they're short.

Weight Loss What's the best exercise to lose weight fast? Nov 24 2011

eat healthy(complex carbs, healthy fats, leans protein) - no refined carbs, sugars etc.

Change your workout routine - doing the same thing all the time causes your body to hit a plateau because your body adapts quickly to exercises.

plyometrics   - uses your own body weight to do explosive moves.
lifting weights, building muscle not only helps your bones but the more muscle you have the more calories you burn while doing nothing.
HIIT (high intensity interval training) - these a short workouts, but you put your max effort into each interval. HIIT can last from 15-30 minutes. Generally is max effort for 30 seconds, 30 second slow, 30 fast and so forth. But these can change depending on the fitness level of the person doing them

In any case, I'm sure anything would work for you, as long as you change it up a bit as opposed to running.

If you're interested in short but intense workouts, you can check out BodyRock  which is a mixture of HIIT with plyometrics and weights.

then i would say, don't change what you're eating. try mixing up your workouts. it's clear you've it a plateau. In my opinion, plyometerics will kick any person's butt into gear.

I know you've also mentioned that you don't have to consume too many calories, but you're going to read it again, eat an extra 200 calories. Do this for a few days then go back down.

I like this calculator - gives you an idea of how much to each, even gives the zig zag diet I'm talking about. Doing this will also help your body to no plateau.

just out of curiosity, if you are living with a body builder currently, why aren't you asking them for advice as oppose to people on the internet.

I'm sure they could give a workout routine for you, and give you a proper eating plan. It's not just about the amount of calories you consume, it's about eating healthy too.

i've never had a strained muscle before but definitely keep off it, and exercise it with very low impact exercises such as walking, swimming i think would be ideal for this kind of situation. Plus that way you will get an over all body workout.

also

Most muscle strains can be treated with the RICE protocol. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Rest: Take a break from the activity that caused the strain. Your physician may recommend that you use crutches to avoid putting weight on the leg.

Ice: Do not apply ice directly to the skin, but you can use cold packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

Compression: To prevent additional swelling and blood loss, wear an elastic compression bandage.

Elevation: To minimize swelling, keep your leg up higher than your heart.

however; if you do light cardio or exercises of any kind and it's uncomfortable, just stop and let your muscles rest.  You don't want to make it worse.

Weight Loss How bad is eating like this? Mar 04 2010
01:01 (UTC)

well it is bad because you eat a large meal but then don't eat again for many hours so your body starts to go into starvation mode, and once it does that anything you eat will be stored as fat.

maybe try eating just a 500cal breakfast then having a lunch that's about 500 cals and  then dinner? no one says you have to jump into eating 5-6 small meals a day right away. i know i sure don't.

if you enjoy eggs buy egg whites and ditch the yolks.

one thing i enjoy having is a slice of fat free cheese or skim milk cheese with 1/2cup of egg whites, and 2 pieces of weight watcher bread.

i personally cook the egg whites in a rectangle container in the microwave because i generally don't have time in the morning to cook it on the stove (however, cooking it in the microwave tastes just as good, and is healthier: no oils, butter or sprays are needed)

i toast the bread, put the egg on, then the cheese heat it up in the microwave to make sure the cheese has melted and bam, that's about 24g of protein right there.

oh also that's about 200 cals for the thing. depending on the cheese you use of course.

hey there, sorry to hear about what happened. My cousin had gone through a similar experience, she wasn't a vegetarian though. So with that being said it doesn't matter if you're vegetarian or not, just insure you're getting the proper nutrients.

Here's a great website for any medical related issues.

MayoClinic

It has the definition, symptoms, causes and much more.

I'm sure when you're ready to try again, that things will go fine :)

i was about the same wight when i was her age, and frankly i wished my parents pushed me harder to eat better but more importantly become more active.

You mentioned she will be joining her sister with dance lessons and that you have a pool. right there is great ways for exercise. The swimming pool is probably one of the best forms of exercise. Very low impact on the body and is a total body workout. Best part is it doesn't even feel like you're working out, and you can't tell if you're sweating or not.

If she enjoys swimming maybe join her in the pool, do some laps, play water sports in it.

As for food, it sounds like she's eating healthy, ensure that the portion sizes are not too large, but not too small.

I doubt it's because of what she's eating that's causing her to gain weight. It's simple when it comes down to it, the less you do the less you eat. the more you do the more you can eat.

So with that she may eating the proper amount to someone who is a bit more active - even if it's an extra 30minutes a day. If you do very little physical activity, your metabolism will be slower than compared to someone who does more.

If she doesn't enjoy high intensity workouts (which aren't good for overweight people, can cause joint pain) maybe try going for longer walks around the neighbourhood.

Does she like grapefruit? it's been proven that 1/2 a grapefruit will help a person gradually lose weight without exercise, so does 3 cups of green tea. Simple things like that can help boost her metabolism a little, including 3 liters of water a day.

If she enjoys spicy food add extra black pepper or curry powder. Ensure to reduce salt intake (if she's taking in a bunch) since it helps retain water, thickens the blood (not a good thing) and adds a extra calories to food.

Wish i could be more help, but just figure out together with her what kind of activities she enjoys and hopefully from there you can find one that gets her moving a bit more :)
maybe she's the type that needs the incentive: if you lose weight you'll get new clothes deal. That's how my sister was.

Fitness Best workout DVD? Feb 03 2010

i personally enjoy Jackie Warner's  DVD. It works upper, torso, lower and includes cardio intervals. So it's a circuit training dvd.

20min for each section, total 60 mins. You don't need anything other than free weights, and a mat for your back when doing crunches (just so it's easier on your back)

Weight Loss Gaining Weight Eating Vegetable Soup?!?!?!? HOW??? Aug 11 2009
18:56 (UTC)
5

yup, could be the sodium - try to aim for 2,400mg or less per day.
also make sure you're drinking lots of water since if you don't drink enough your body will retain water weight

don't forget that if you're exercising you may be building a bit of muscle which yes will increase your weight but that's a good thing because if you build even a little bit of muscle, it means you'll burn fat faster than if you had less.

another is if you're eating low amount of food (which might explain the midnight binging) then your body is just going to store everything as fat.

Weight Loss Weighing in daily to see results Aug 04 2009

i weigh myself once a month - why?

because weight doesn't mean **** when you're building muscle (which i am) so instead i take measurements around my shoulders, bust, waist, hips, thighs, calves, biceps and forearms.

because those are the numbers that truly count - even when you aren't building muscle.

have fun with your daily weigh ins.

Foods Need protein suggestions Jul 31 2009

here's some protein ideas.

Beef

  • Hamburger patty, 4 oz – 28 grams protein
  • Steak, 6 oz – 42 grams
  • Most cuts of beef – 7 grams of protein per ounce

Chicken

  • Chicken breast, 3.5 oz - 30 grams protein
  • Chicken thigh – 10 grams (for average size)
  • Drumstick – 11 grams
  • Wing – 6 grams
  • Chicken meat, cooked, 4 oz – 35 grams

Fish

  • Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked fish, or 6 grams per ounce
  • Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of protein

Pork

  • Pork chop, average - 22 grams protein
  • Pork loin or tenderloin, 4 oz – 29 grams
  • Ham, 3 oz serving – 19 grams
  • Ground pork, 1 oz raw – 5 grams; 3 oz cooked – 22 grams
  • Bacon, 1 slice – 3 grams
  • Canadian-style bacon (back bacon), slice – 5 – 6 grams

Eggs and Dairy

  • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
  • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
  • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
  • Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
  • Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
  • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
  • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz

Beans (including soy)

  • Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
  • Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
  • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
  • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
  • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
  • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

Nuts and Seeds

  • Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
  • Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
  • Peanuts, ¼ cup – 9 grams
  • Cashews, ¼ cup – 5 grams
  • Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams
  • Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams
  • Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
  • Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams

even switching your bread to nut and grain will help, oatmeal, red river are better choices than bagels. with one serving of oatmeal/red river you're getting about 5g of protein. then add some eggs to that and a piece of fruit and you're good to go.

Spinach also has protein, so make a spinach eggs salad or spinach and chicken/fish salad or wrap. Basically try to get protein in each snack/meal even if it's small amounts.

for granola bars, the only kind i'll ever eat are nutrilite bars. loaded with tons of good stuff.  Amway - Nutrilite nutrition bars is a link to the product, and here's a link to the nutritional information on it. Lemon Nutrilite nutrition bar. Obviously still better to eat real food, but this is great if you're in a rush.

Weight Loss No support from my husband about weight loss. Jul 30 2009
05:11 (UTC)
1

hey :)

i'm not married or a parent, but when i was growing up i was always that chubby girl or slightly overweight one. My sister had the nice body and looks while i got the brains. sure it was nice to be smart, but frankly it gets crushing after awhile when guys don't want you.

I finally got into a relationship with a guy, after losing 35lbs (was 190, dropped to about 140lbs) then after being with him i had picked up on his poor eaitng habits. before i knew i had gone up to 198lbs. I wasn't even 21 yet. i felt terrible.

I had always recieved comments such as 'your fat' 'why do you even try? you always just quit anyway'. He liked that fact that i was losing weight, but never truely helped me or gave me the support i really needed. About 2 years ago while playing World of Warcraft (i know, terrible), i had met this guy who was fun to play with. In the end after months of talking i had let him know what i was trying to do. Since then he has given me support. Sure sometimes i hated him for telling me i should go exercise or eat better, but i knew he cared. Every day he said things, sure sometimes it may hurt but with all his support and able to share my emotional experiences with him, i've lost about 62lbs and i've kept it off.

No i didn't go on some stupid diet (they never work in the long run). I'm the type that needed motivation from atleast another person, and he was it, even though e was miles away from me.

Here i am now, still losing weight, but now putting muscle on, eating clean and exercising almost every day. Not because of some man, i told myself i wanted to have  higher self esteem, be confident in myself and in the end be healthy.  Granted yes i find it hard sometimes when i've got my own family no less always asking if i want to snack on junk food or bad food for me.

But frankly, after seeing how i've changed physically and emotionally, i wouldn't trade it in, specially after putting in the hard work and knowing that i did it basically all on my own - no special trainers, no real training equipment, i thought to myself, i can do almost anything now if i truely set my mind to it.

So with that being said, it doesn't have to be your partners who help support you (though i'm not sure why they would complaing that you want to get fit and healthy), having a single person to help is a huge step. Even if you're not motivated to work out, do it anyways, even if your craving that chocolate fudge sundea, don't buy it or put it down, go drink some water and have fruit.

No joke, fruit for me is my dessert. it's packed full of healthy sugar (compared to refined sugar) and tons of health benefits.

To help keep yourself motivated, keep logs of your measurements, set small goals such as instead of jogging for 5mins straight, lets do 7mins. Keep track of your workouts. Soon before you know, you'll feel better health wise not only from the exercise but most importantly from the food. Sure you'll crave those deep fried grease but once they go away it's basically smooth sailing from there.
I've been tweaking my eating habits for awhile now, and i'm at the point where i have zero desire to eat junk food. Even if you don't exercise, just changing your eating habit is huge.

That's how i first started. I just slowly cut out the greasy food, and when i mean slow i'm talking 6 months slow. Simply because i didn't want to put a ton of stress on my body or end up binging.

I'm not a dieter, i'm a lifestyle switcher. it takes time, patience, dedication and self control. Soon you'll be thinking in more positive ways, have energy almost all the time - even after long grueling workouts.
I have ditched the people who were negative or a bad influence on me. No temptation if the temptation isn't there.

I'm betting, once your husband starts to results, he'll start encouraging you more. i know my current boyfriend is absolutely loving it. If he's still reluctant or wants to spend more time with you, make him go on brisk walks with you while the weather is still nice. No one says you have to be sweating hardcore to lose body fat.

I'm always willing to give any help or tips when asked or give support if needed, since i know how it feels when there is none compared to when there is.

Don't hesitate to send me a message through CC.
