Progresso Soups & Skittles
Hey guys - watch out for the Progresso soups!
I've been eating them a lot, and then I decided to read the ingredients.
They're made with chicken broth!
AND, I'm assuming that most of you already know this about the soup and what I'm about to say, but to those of you who don't, Skittles are made with gelatin.
Just thought I'd let you know. Marshmallows have gelatin as well.
Skittles...have gelatin?! Noooo. I haven't had the original kind since I went vegetarian, but that's a devastating blow. Apparently the European version is vegetarian, but not vegan, since it uses shellac. (I'm one of those vegetarians that don't mind eating bugs, evidently. =/)
Funny thing is, not all Skittles aren't veggie. I was worried that I accidentally consumed gelatin because I tried the new chocolate Skittles about two weeks ago, but a quick search indicates that they are vegan. I pored over the label closely before buying them, so the thought that I might've overlooked something worried me for a moment there. x)
On a side note, I discovered that Subway's cheese has rennet. I just gave up dairy, so that's not a problem for me, but I used to force myself to eat the cheese on my veggie sandwiches for extra calories, calcium, and protein. Uggh.
And! The real chafer. I ordered a side salad last night at McD's - I never go there, but my bf wanted it, and I was agreeable - and ordered light Italian on the side, thinking it was "safe" and it had both fish and dairy in it. Who adds fish and cheese to Italian dressing?! Arrgh! I'm such a naive vegetarian, I swear. I'm learning new things every day.
And giving up marshmallows was hard. I enjoy marshmallow fluff every once in a while, though, and that takes care of the cravings.
Thanks for the info! =)
PS - Poptarts and frosted mini-wheats have gelatin in it, too. Two of my pre-vegetarian favorite foods, no less. T.T
No way! Pop tarts?! Oh well. I don't eat them, anyway.
Ugh; I hate eating a food, REALLY enjoying it and then discovering that it has non-vegetarian-friendly things in it. Like with the dressing; they EASILY could've left seafood out of that.
I was SO glad to discover that you weren't talking about adding Skittles to Progresso soup, a la Skittlebrau (from the Simpsons).
I'm not a vegetarian, but I am fairly certain that there are vegan marshmallows out there. I think I've seen them in the organic/health foods section of my grocery store.
As for dressing, I don't know about Italian, but Caesar dressing traditionally contains anchovies, so watch out.
Edit: found a link to some of the Vegan marshmallows: Sweet and Sara Vanilla Vegan Marshmallows
You know, I didn't know about Ceasar dressing until about a year or so ago. When I think of all the fish I've consumed....yikes!
Most Progresso soups say " non- vegetarian or vegtarian" above the ingred. but i would still check.
Some kinds of Planter's roasted peanuts have gelatin too. Wierd I know; apparently they have MSG as well. I found that out while looking for a decent snack in my grandma's pantry a few months ago. Dx
Most Ceasar dressing contains anchovies. I'm not suprised by that one.
Actually, British skittles are vegetarian :)
Makes me happy.
Am I missing something? Marshmallow fluff is not vegan, it's almost all egg whites...
Wahhhh! Why do they have to put animals in EVERYTHING??!?!??!

Try 'Rice-Mellow'. It's really yummy!
oh and also not all poptarts have gelatin in them- it depends on the flavor. I have a veg friend who eats them pretty much as the basis of his diet.
yeah the unfrosted apple cinnamon, brown sugar cinnamon, blueberry, and strawberry poptarts are all safe (as long as they're unfrosted).
Starbursts have gelatin in them too.
But oreo's are safe! lol
as well as fruit by the foot
so are the original-flavored airhead

No they aren't. They have cochineal in them now. :( I've noticed lots of companies doing this now so that they can display proudly on the packet "no artificial colourings". Rainbow Drops is another example. It sucks.
I've been a vegetarian for about 9 years now, and each year I seem to eliminate something in my diet, I exclude anything that has a meat bi-product in it (I do eat eggs on a rare occasion and I'm Lactose Intolerant so I can't have dairy) but everytime i go grocery shopping and I see something that looks interesting, I ALWAYS read labels before I buy. Also, for those that are Vegan, you can go to PETA's website and they have a HUGE grocery list of many many products that are vegan friendly. Such as ALL oreo's are safe to eat EXCEPT the original! The other ones are completely free of animal products.
Campbells soups are made with chicken/beef broth too. Except for the Vegetarian vegetable soup. Make sure it says vegetarian because the normal vegetable soup has it in there too. >:[
So are most of the Ramen noodles.
:( I found that out like this spring and was pissed and horrified that I had eaten them since I turned Vegetarian three years ago.
Do you guys ever wonder how much of your brain is taken up by an internal list of foods that contain hidden meat? I really wish I could use that part of my mind for something more interesting than remembering which gummy treats are made with carnuba wax instead of gelatin.
Did you know you can make homemade marshmallows with corn syrup and confectioners sugar?
: )
They can get REALLY sticky though!
Ya the ramen was a real blow .. Although I found the "Oriental" falvoured one (I don't remember the brand, they're all different) had no meat and was "Safe" .. but my store stopped carrying it! Now the kind they carry, even the "vegetable" one lists chicken fat in the ingredients! ugh.
Since going vegan I have eliminated so.many.foods from my "list of accetable products" ..
I was really dismayed that most pre-packaged "vegetarian meat products" contain milk and cheese related stuff. Although the gardenburger vegan patties are pretty tasty.
Oh well! Just another reason to not eat junk food. After all. I am still trying to lose 40lbs.

vegan 'mallow fluff! they have a vegan alternative for almost everything you can think of..
Canadian skittles too? Noooo!! Not that I eat them often, but I've occassionally grabbed a few from a friend. Why must gelatin hide in all my yummy candy? ah well, I probably shouldn't be eating that junk anyway.
I can't believe frosted mini wheats have gelatin, totally did not know that since I read this.
Well..I don't think I've had them in three years, but I used to eat those all the time.
For progresso soups, there is only one now that I eat & really like thats vegetarian, all the others they started putting chicken broth into & thats Tomato Rotini.
I buy my marshmallows online from a place in Georgia, expensive, but it's worth it when my family goes camping and has smores!
