Propagation
I propagate japanese maples for fun.
I currently just take cuttings, but I have 2 species (a laceleaf and an autumn moon) that I want to graft to some of my cuttings.
I've got instructions, and pulled info off the internet.
But I'm curious if there is anyone here who has tried this and has any tips in addition to the standard steps to take?
Wait.
Is this a joke thread?
I can't tell.

no, so I expect no one to read it. further proving my theory.
I truly do this, and am truly planning to do the grafting.
I propagate dust bunnies. Not for fun though.
I study waves propogating through the Earth. It's basically the coolest thing ever. P-S converted waves are my fav right now because of the amazingly clear image they can produce in the presence of fluids. You rock S-waves!!!
I read it, but I don't do it, and as everyone knows I won't post on what I don't do.
annoying > boring

and this is a problem why? ;)
i taste them to distinguish between clays and silts, and sometimes sand grain size. it can be a tough call in the field.
I spent 5 years working at a garden and three of those in the propagation greenhouses. I didn't do much with tree grafting though I've seen books about it. Mostly we took cuttings of perennials. Can you tell me the basic steps (or give me the link you're using) that you're using now?
P.S. I love Japanese Maples - I was standing in front of one in my profile pic because it matched my dress. =)

and i kid about the geophysicist part, its like an aggies/longhorns rivalry but nobody takes it seriously.

They wouldn't let us taste them in our rock identification test in high school. I snuck a taste of the quartz/salt anyway. It was, of course, quartz. And then I felt silly.
I don't have the link - stuff is at home. its cutting a V into the branch to be grafted, and then slicing down diagonally into the base/root stock and then put in the branch and tie together.
Or instead of the V, just a 1" diagonal. I've read both. I've seen the diagonal more often than the V in stores and stuff, but seems hard to keep together?
I only have a couple of root stock plants that are big enough right now though. I kept giving them away to family & friends!

well at least you knew better than to rub it on your food.
omg i <3 u!
*Licks her quartz, amethyst, hematite, moss agate*
they all taste the same to me?
*licks Amethyst*
that was a little different.
Hey Amethyst, was that good for you?
Hey! Stop licking me!!
edit: Never mind - keep going.
