Proposition 8
Should Christian values overrule human rights, or should gay rights overturn the consensus of the moral majority?
booo prop 8!
Well, that's 2 Canadians opposed! LOL!
that's what i was thinking ;)
Human rights should overturn the consensus of the so-called moral majority... Interracial marriage used to be "immoral" also. And segregation used to be "equality." (Separate but Equal)
I think churches should do what they want regarding gay marriage. But, the government should not make decisions about human rights based on religion.
Legal marriage is not the same as religious marriage, if people want to combine the two then they can say goodbye to the separation of church and state and the legal protections that churches enjoy because of it.
IMO it is just mean-spirited to deny gays the right to marry. It does not impact anyone else except in their ability to judge and feel superior to gays. Shame on them.
Prop 8's BS. ![]()
Human rights supercede religious convictions.
I'll leave the religious folks to their right to not recognize a marriage "in the eyes of God" based on their convictions. But, IMO, it is discriminatory for the government to deny gay couples the civil rights that heterosexual couples enjoy.
Hell, I'm not religious at all- my husband and I were wed in a civil ceremony at a registar's office. I'm sure my marriage isn't sanctified. But I do still enjoy the benefits the government bestows on a married couple. I think my gay friends deserve the same rights.
The moral majority is neither.
Human rights outweigh any religious agenda ever and always!

Many thanks for the input Mooni!
Your comment (and Denise's) did make me realize that I may have inadvertantly and unfairly categorized those in favour of Proposition 8 - not my intent at all, and I apologize to anyone who may have been slighted by my original wording. I do recognize that it's entirely possible to be in support of Propostion 8 and not be a member of the "Moral Majority". I'd still like to hear your opinions.
I remember when Reagan was first elected and how he helped bring about the so-called moral majority. I had dropped out of college and was partying pretty heavily. I had many gay friends and they were dear to me.
I'll never forget my friend and soul brother, Gary the Groundhog, coining the phrase for us: The moral majority is neither. I've been saying it for over 25 years now and it is even more pertinent now than it was then.
I think that some of the people who are in favor of Prop 8 are simply afraid of change or sadly misguided.
I have little patience and very low regard for the people who promote the moral majority rhetoric.
Life is short, often hard and sometimes, if you're lucky you find a partner to share it with. I don't see why anyone should or would put road blocks in the way of that.
Boooohhhh prop 8!

Prop 8 sucks.
Human rights should always overrule.
The No on 8 phone banking I've been to has been at churches where their interpretation of Christian values is in favor of gay rights.
just let people make their own decisions in life, who cares what your neighbor wants to do with his life, it's his life ....let them be!
Looking at the responses thus far, it would appear that all of the young, beautiful people oppose Prop 8!
#14 - Seconded. I don't understand how someone else's relationship effects anyone else outside that relationship.
I mean, if you're against gay marriage, don't marry someone of the same sex. If you're against abortion, don't have one. I don't see why people need to meddle in other people's lives.
Same sex couples deserve to have all the rights of marriage. This is important because it effects things like being considered "family" to visit a dying loved one in the hospital, health benefits, tax treatment, and inheritance laws. Honestly, I don't know why there isn't a federal civil union. It has nothing to do with religion.
P.S. I'm from CA, and I voted absentee against 8.
Boo on Prop 8.
Gay couples should be able to get married, not have civil unions. It's like segregation, seperate but "equal". People always argue that "marriage is a religious union". Yeah, maybe that's how it started, but people of different religions or with no religion get married. Look at Britney Spears or probably half the people who get married in vegas, and get an annullment after a couple days. Sounds like they really respect the "sanctity of marriage".
No. I think all marriages should be relegated to civil unions. Then people can go to their church of choice and get married if they feel the need to do so. Many countries in europe have been doing this for eons and it works beautifully.
We in the US call it marriage and have given religious leaders the legal authority to marry people. Take away that legal ability from all religious leaders and let them perform religious marriages.
i'm pretty sure that before marriage was a religious union, it was a social and political contract. think tribal alliances.
