Protein bar, is this bad?

Quote  |  Reply
i love protein bars, but I realize that they all pretty much contain saturated fat. I've only had 1 gram of saturated fat today, after my 2 field hockey games tonight I was planning to have this 32gram protein bar after.

here's its nutrition facts.

Calories:320
Total Fat: 9grams
Saturated: 6grams
Carbs: 32grams.
Sugars: 2g
Sugar alcohol(?): 18g.

Gosh, that's kind of a lot of saturated fat for something so small.  That's, like, more than some 3 oz steaks have, depending on the cut of meat.  Is there some other way you could get your protein without something so artificial?  If not, it wouldn't really hurt you to eat it, because the FDA says we shouldn't go over 10 g of saturated fat a day, so you'd still be ok, but I personally would avoid it.
I thought the recommendation was to not go over 20 grams sat fat -- 6 grams is still bad considering 20 grams (or 10?) has to last you ALL day -- i.e., you know you're going to get more sat fat at your other meals, so it's real easy to go over. Doing is once in a while is likely not going to cause any harm. Maybe just don't buy those kind of protein bars anymore. I don't know why they all have so much SF -- I'm sure they can figure out how to make better ones. People need to start speaking up ... or NOT buying them!

These bars have saturated fat in the form of fractionated palm kernel oil. The only reason they have saturated fat is because they need something that will keep the bar from falling apart at room temperature. Trans fats were the most effective fat for stabilization of candy and baked goods, but trans fats have been deemed too unhealthy for that purpose. It's a trade off.

If you look at a dark chocolate bar, they usually contain even more saturated fat than this protein bar does.
my zone bars only have 200 calories, with the sam, amount of protein and carbos.

that's impossible because each gram of protein and carb equals 4 calories. This bar has 64 grams when you add up protein and carbs. 64*4 is greater than 200.
your eating a protien bar?  well what kind is it lol

some are energy bars...others protien, and then the other others...
So, give more stats of the type of bars.  As for sugar alcohol, those suck :P
Protein bars, IMO, are processed junk and you should stay away.  You should consume no more than 9% of your total calories from saturated fat.  Since saturated fat plays such a major role in cholesterol, heart disease, heart attacks I consume as little as possible.

Go for a whey smoothie after workouts or try to look for better stats for the protein bars. Steer clear of coconut, cashew or peanut- these are usually the worst!
i usually just have my zone bar as a dessert for the day.

personally, I don't buy those type of things anymore.

For me, a banana, 2 tsp 100% pure peanut butter, 1 slice whole multi-grain toast, with 3/4 cup fat-free milk. Only 300 calories of delicious filling food for probably 75 cents. Now that's a serious snack, its almost a meal.
but can you carry that any where? Hummm! lol  its a mess sometimes and when your on the go, id rather have a protien bar then , well nothing (and if ur trying to in a calorie suprplus, its helpful).  but its just depends on the type, some bars are good, some arnt.
Whey protein! You can mix it with almost any liquid.  One scoop of Designer Whey French Vanilla has 18 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat, and 2 grams of carbs.  And only half a gram of saturated fat plus a ton of vitamins and minerals.  Also, think about it, do you really want to put something in your body you put a question mark by i.e. sugar alcohol?
I've switched to two scoops of whey after working out. I'll only eat a protein bar if I'm in a real jam and have no alternative available to me.
I stick to Luna bars.  Most of them have 180 calories and are perfectly balanced.  And no trans fats - all good stuff in there.
thank you all, and after reading it all i threw it in the trash and said "well i'll never by that again." hahaha.

hey, you CAN carry the banana-peanut butter-bread thing anywhere! I have a tiny plastic container, and put ONE slice of whole grain bread in there, with 1-2 teaspoons of 100% peanut butter (a little is enough), and keep the banana whole. Of course the milk can't be carried, but a calcium tablet fits into the container.

I even have a tiny flexible food cooler thing, that I can stick a tiny frozen "cryopack" in, and that sucker stays cool all day, and its small.

Even just a banana, with a tiny closed package of peanut butter is good for me. I find those bars are a rip-off, and who knows what's in them. But there probably are some decent bars out there these days.
Does all that fit in your fanny pack?

sure does, but I don't use a "fanny pack" much. But its tiny, they have tiny ice cryopacks now, and tiny soft food cooler packs. You just  roll it up.

I  usually just put a sandwich in there, and once I forgot to eat it, and it stayed cool enough to eat for 6 hours in hot weather. I also put a small bottle of frozen water in there sometimes, and this keeps it cold, and as it melts I drink it.

I prefer real food,  and not these bars. but there are probably ok bars out there,  but who knows what's in them. I will prefer a nice healthy sandwich.
