Are protein bars a bad idea for me?

Quote  |  Reply

I realize they're geared towards athletes and people who work out. I never work out.

But, I think I lack protein in my diet because I don't eat much meat, beans, or nuts.  Plus, (i could be entirely wrong, i have no idea) my hair is really weak still and falls out from my anorexic trip a bit ago, so wouldn't eating more protein help this?

Basically, would eating a protein bar as a snack occasionally be detrimental to me?

Detrimental in what way? There are other sources of protein. For example yogurt has a good amount. The greek yogurt has the most amount of protein. Fish has also good amount of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.  Bison meat and lean grass fed beef have tons of protein and are low in saturated fat.

My personal opinion if someone who is not a serious athelete needs to rely on protein bars to get their protein they need to step back and really re-evaluate their diet, because there is something seriously wrong with it.

I highly recommend you talk to a doctor and a nutritionist.

Protein bars are ok once in a while, but ideally you shouldn't be getting your protein by relying on them. I eat them as snacks maybe once a week when I have pasta for dinner instead of a protein source, but I'm very particular over what kind of protein bar I choose. Greek yogurt, whole-grain bread, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, milk, etc. are pretty good non-meat sources.

If you could get one serving of meat/fish in a day, that would help you a lot.

But yea, this is more of a nutritionist situation.

Thanks, both of you.  I guess I was just basically wondering what the effects of getting too much protein would be for me.  I went ahead and looked it up on some sites online, which is what I should have done instead of expecting you guys to do all the work for me.
