I want to buy a protein powder. I've checked out a few places, hoping to find some small size samples to buy so I could try them out, but I can't find any! All of this stuff comes in huge containers and they're not cheap. I don't want to buy something and not like it. I'm considering EAS Vanilla 100 % Whey Powder. I hear it's one of the better tasting ones. Anybody tried it?
Thanks!
I got a few single serving pouches of different types at Whole Foods, but sadly I didn't like any of them. Maybe it's just me, but every single one I tried just tasted like chalk. Good luck finding one though, and please let me know if you come across any good ones.
Yeah... most, if not all, protein powders don't taste so good. Thats why people make smoothies/shakes with them to mask the taste.
I like the EAS protein powder although I've never tried it straight. Buy it someplace where you can return it if you don't like it.

Yep. I add my whey protein to yogurt and oatmeal to mask it. If I was less lazy about cleaning up messes, I'd blend it with veggies and such for a smooth. I've never met someone who thought their protein powder was delicious.
I've tried the BSN lean desserts chocolate fudge and love it! It is really thick even mixed with water. It is only 20 g of protein though. It is 130 cals.
The body fortress one is ok - liquidy... but it has 26 g protein and 110 cals.
I have the EAS chocolate one. I find it pretty good. At first I didn't really like the chemically kind of aftertaste so much, but it was still drinkable. And now I don't even notice that anymore, and I like it much better. Weird... Of course, I do only add water to mine because I am a student with too much class to go home after workouts and make a tasty shake. It's easiest for me to transport it dry in my shaker cup, and then just add water to the powder after my workout. But yes - so far EAS has worked well for me, though I haven't tried the vanilla flavour.
I've found that health food stores (like organic grocers) tend to carry sample sizes. GNC has a few sample sizes too.
I've tried Body Fortress vanilla whey, which is the cheapest you'll find, and it tasted fine, but had a horrible aftertaste that lasts for hours. However, I've talked to some people who have never experienced an aftertaste. I think some people are particularly sensitive to the taste of whey (it's a byproduct of curdled milk, so it's understandable).
I've tried rice protein and Spiru-Tein whey (both chocolate), and both were delicious. I mix them with milk (I use almond milk but you can use regular), lite silken tofu, frozen yogurt, and a banana to make a milkshake at about 200 calories. I've done a pumpkin pie one with pureed pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices, and I also like vanilla/blueberry and chocolate/banana.
I hear that chocolate flavors taste the best, but I think vanilla is the most versatile because you can just throw some frozen fruit in and you're good to go.
I mix the EAS with a banana and milk and its very good. I also found a George Foreman life shake to be really good - it also has gobs of vitamins and minerals and omegas and all the goodies so I don't have to take a multivitamin anymore
When the CVS pharmacy only had vanilla left of the GF I went to the health food store and got Nature's Plus Energy Shake - its very good too but a bit of after taste but has lots of vitamins I get all these in the chocolate and mix with banana
oh sweet - I didn't know Spriru-Tein made a whey protein powder, I've only had the soy (which are delicious, and they have lots of flavors!)
I use Body Fortress Vanilla - I like it a lot, in oatmeal, cereal, or smoothies. The chocolate is drinkable, but not as good in smoothies. The cookies and cream is not meant for human consumption.
26 gm protein, 110 cals. and about 1/2 the price of anything else.
I'd like to try EAS, but can't justify the price. Muscle milk is way to many cals.
Smoothie King sells the powder they use in their "gladiator" and "shredded" smoothies, looks good for protein and cal stats, but expensive. I might go for that when the current bottle is empty.
EAS is very nice in all flavor's but expensive.
i also like Met-RX which is much cheaper the strawberry is drinkable but is my least favorite, all the others are nice ... with chocolate coming out tops for me, i also mix different flavor's occasionally banana/choc or strawberry/vanilla or turn them into smoothies by adding fruit when i fancy a change.
When I first started the whole protein shake thing, I braced myself for the worst.
Like you said, it's not cheap, so I picked up the smallest and cheapest container I could find, which turned out to be a soy chocolate protein powder. I mixed with with soy chocolate milk and found it to be pretty damn good!
However, soy milk goes bad quickly, and since I was out of town so much this month, I picked up some on-the-go pre-made shakes that are pretty disgusting. They taste like sweet water with a chocolate-chalk after taste. I have to choke them down while chanting in my head, "Yay protein! Yay muscles! Hurry up and get it down!"
I bought a 2-pound jar of ON 100% Whey Protein in natural vanilla yesterday and I love it! I was short on calories last night so I had 2 shakes! :) I would highly recommend it because it tastes natural, has no after-taste, doesn't taste chalky and dissolves easily. I will definitely use it in recipes.
Before I had Weider whey protein in vanilla and it was disgusting. I think they only sell this brand in Canada, but in any case don't buy it. I couldn't even drink it in the morning and I had to find all kinds of ways to mask the taste.
Some stores like GNC let you return the product if you don't like the taste, so you won't be stuck with some product you paid $50 and don't use.
Good luck! :)
EAS is cheap at costco, ~$40 for a 25 pound bag as I recall, much cheaper than the 16 oz tins for $10. Any healthfood store that I've gone into it's ridiculously expensive.
I use MetRx Extreme Chocolate and find that as long as it's well mixed and cold, it's very good ...
I buy the EAS Whey powder in chocolate at Sam's for $29 (6 pound bag). Although I can mix it with water and it is ok as far as taste goes. Mixing it with skim milk or even half water and half skim milk makes it actually taste GOOD ![]()
I reallty enjoy, Muscle milk, it tastes great and you get great results
I am on the Herballife Protien Powder and I really like it. I have triend many things but they give you a recipe sheet and well and some secrets. I use their choc but depending on what you like. I am switching to the Sam's or Walmart brand but here is Key.
Chocolate /Banana
2 scoops of Protien powder (I use Chocolate)
1/2 banana
2 cups skim milk
1 cup ice
I could drink all day, and when working out I add extra protien.
The only brand I've tried and liked (and trust me, I've tried tons of them) is Solgar's Whey To Go protein powder in the "vanilla bean" flavor. It's unsweetened so there's no funky aftertaste and the flavor is clean and well-balanced instead of being chemically and artifical like a lot of others.
I got my container at Whole Foods, but I think it's cheaper to order off Amazon.
On the rare occasion I take a protein shake, I use GNC's PM Protein, chocolate. And mix it with half water and half skim milk. Tastes well, for protein.
