Protein Powder???

Quote  |  Reply
Hi, this may seem like a stupid question, but I'd just like your advice. (If it's in the wrong section, then I apologise now).

I don't eat red meet at all, I don't like the taste of it, or the texture. I eat chicken sometimes and I eat fish about twice a week. However, I keep looking at how much protein I seem to be eating and I don't think I'm eating enough at all, it's all carbs and fat (not bad sat fat though). When I do eat protein, there's always so much fat too... I eat fish more than chicken and there always seems to be lots of fat in fish. The only other protein I get is that teeny amount from milk and cheese. I'm not a big milk drinker when the milk is on its own, and chocolate milkshake with all it's sugar and such seems like a silly idea to adopt..

My question is this: would it be ideal for me to start taking protein shakes? I don't like nuts really... so peanut butter on toast is out of the question really.

I do lift weights too... not huge amounts of weight... but free weights at home, and I was thinking becuase of this, and my lack of protein... a protein shake could be a good idea.

However, I haven't really got a clue and would like some advice from you people who do know.

Thank you in advance.

Another great source of Protein is lean turkey. If you can find turkey cutlets they are 98% fat free with 28g of protein in only 4 oz! Also, sliced deli turkey is great, and low in fat and carbs. Just watch the sodium.

I usually have 3 whey protein shakes a day.  It's a great way to add extra protein without much fat.

What kind of fish are you eating that's so high in fat?

Unprocessed white fish like Haddock and Cod have 1 or 2 grams of fat per serving (along with 20g of protein). The only way your fish is high in fat is if you're frying it in a ton of oil.
Don't worry, you'll find your favorite protein-foods in time. I don't eat any meat, but I get plenty of protein each day. I get it from spinach, tofu, fat free cheese, whole grain toast, fat free cottage cheese, and others, mostly veggies.

I also have a fruit smoothie with 1/2 scoop (12g protein, 55 cal) whey protein powder. I use ON 100% whey, and I usually buy the chocolate kind. But, I was adventurous and bought the vanilla, which I'll try tonight with a blend of cherries.

I don't know what brands they sell in the UK, but just go to the health section of your grocery store where organic foods and supplements are sold. If you see protein or health bars, you're in the right area. Just check the labels and get the brand that best fits your needs! :)
holland and barret sell whey powder and soya powder in the UK
I have salmon alot. and everytime I look at the stats it always seems to have loads of fat. :|

Thank you guys. :D
Holland and Barratt often do special deals where you get a big container of whey protein powder for under a tenner. I've tried the banana flavoured one and it tastes ok but I do have to use a whisk to get it to the right consistency.

Other sources of protein include mushrooms ( i snack on these raw ad at 4cals each you can;t complain, plus they are loaded with B vitamins), cottage chees (i LOVE the chive and onion ones and the pineapple one is quite nice) or there is lean fish like tuna, cod etc. Those sliced turkey and chicken breast you can get in the supermarket are great for snacking and the protein keeps my hunger at bay for longer.

Peanut butter is a good un but it does have fat and often sugar and salt added.
