Protein requirement

Quote  |  Reply

I know that some might feel that this post belongs in the food section, but I'd like advice from people who believe in fitness...

I'm looking at upping my Protein requirements... and not too sure how to do it successfully... Anyone knows of good sources? I know that chicken, tuna, nuts, ... are good, but do you know of any other foods, snacks, etc???

I guess I realized that I'm eating wayyy too much carbs and need to level my nutrients...

Im a runner and if I'm lacking in protein I usually go for a protein shake (homeade with designer whey) or a protein bar (under 200 cals) as an easy way to get like 25 g FAST.

As far as foods go (in addition to those you said), I like black bean soup (and beans in general), salmon, and kashi goLEAN cereal.

I forgot to add: muscle milk light is delish too

If you need a high protein start to your morning, you could try yogurt, eggs, or oatmeal, which are all good ways to fit protein into your breakfast.

Also, I usually eat soy nuts as a snack (good source of protein, but some people don't like the taste)

Fish, poultry (white meat), red meat (lean cuts) are good sources of protein.

I like the real food approach myself. So in my case I'm all about the meats (like you said), eggs and their whites, JERKY!!! string cheese, cottage cheese, ants, cicadas, earthworms........just kidding.

Those are really the best. I consider beans, yogurt, nuts and seeds secondary protein sources as protein isnt really their main macronutrient.

I avoid soy and such for thyroid, endocrine, and environmental/political reasons. (Sorry I'm really opinionated about the stuff.)

Here is some good information on how much you should get. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14563169/

Good sources of protein/amino acids are

Whole grains, oats, brown rice, brown pasta, legumes, beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, peanut butter, cottage cheese, cheese, tuna, salmon, lean meats and other fish, turkey, chicken, seed and nuts, leafy greens, broccoli and other veggies, eggs, egg beaters, cereal.

I am a firm believer in high protein consumption. I believe eating a high protein diet not only fuels your body to give you energy but also builds sleek & sexy muscle. Daily I eat almost 2 pounds of protein which obviously means it is my biggest percentage of calories in a diet that is roughly 1500 calories. The protein I eat come from animal products but only lean & healthy sources that contain healthful fats.

- Grass Fed Red Meats are a staple in my diet... I preach about how nutritious these meats are every time I post a comment! But it is true! They are nutritionally equivalent to omega-3 rich fish like salmon & sardines, yet you do not have to worry about mercury, PBCs, parasites or Mad Cow Disease. Luckily, these meats are becoming more popular because studying are being published about the health benefits of grass-fed animals! The meats that I eat DAILY include [and is not limited to]: Grass Fed Beef, Elk, Ostrich, Bison, Venison, Lamb, Goat

- I do eat some poultry but I find red meats to be much tastier - when I do eat poultry I eat strictly turkey or chicken breast & eggs & egg whites

- I also eat a lot of fish which is an amazing source of protein & healthy fats just like the red meats but you just have the be careful with the mercury consumptions, etc - I love wild king salmon, sardines, escolar, chillean sea bass, hamachi, sable fish, halibut, scallops, shrimp, eel - and the list goes on! Feel free to eat any & all of these fishies to up your protein intake!

* A lot of people recommend protein shakes: but I really don't advocate them! Whey protein comes from milk - and I find dairy to be very unhealthy & soy is not exactly the healthiest source of protein either. Now this is just my opinion so if you feel that these things work for you, by all means consume them - but I have just read plenty of articles stating that these products are not healthy. If you must have protein shakes, have the ones that are made from egg protein!

--Obviously you can tell that I am a huge believer in animal proteins! I have some delicious recipes too if you want any!
