Protein Shake Question?

Quote  |  Reply

I have been drinking Soy Protein shakes every other day for a while now. I was just told by somebody at a gym that Protein shakes will just add weight to my body, is that true? I don't care if the weight is muscle but I am now concerned that I might be getting too much protein from the powder over getting it from foods. Is getting too much protein also a bad thing for your body?

I am 148 lbs, 5'4" and 27 yrs old. I work out 7 days a week and I eat on the average about 1650 cals a day. I am burning between 600-1000 cals a day. I burn more cals with exercise on the days when I eat 1800-2400 cals. Any answers to these questions would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I wish I knew but my brother just told me the exact same thing yesterday. I was complaining that I weighed so much more but i didnt think i looked bigger. He said drinking protein will make your muscles more dense thus making you weigh more on the scale. But if anyone has a great answer to this question i would REALLY love to know!

I don't know if this will help you, but i've been trying to get in more protein as well, but since im a vegetarian this is kinda hard. I discovered these "EAS" brand protein shakes that come in 4 packs with several different (delicious) flavors. They come in low carb, 17 grams of protein and only 110 calories each!!! You could drink 2 if you wanted! Like I said, I don't know if this helps but by adding these into my diet i have noticed a difference in the way my muscles are looking...more defined for sure! It's also a great energy kick before a morning workout. I doubt that 110 calorie protein shakes will make you gain, i haven't noticed any gaining since ive had them so...just a suggestion!

Protein can add weight to your body but it should be in the form of muscle mass/density which is what you want. More muscle mass means that you will burn more calories resting. While your concern about getting too much protein from powder may be a valid one, soy protein is a natural protein and without using something like protein powder it might be hard to get enough protein in the day especially considering how often you exercise. Protein powder is easy to adjust though. You can always just do half a scoop and have a smaller shake and have a little peanut butter on the side or even in your shake if you want some directly-from-food protein.

Thank you everybody. I appreciate your help with my questions. I need the muscle mass so that I can burn more calories when I am resting. I will vary how much protein I use in a shake and make sure that I eat foods with higher protein in them as well. Thank you all again, you have really helped me.
