My protein shake tastes horrible! Help!
So, I made my first official protein shake this morning. The first few sips tasted alright, but the more I drank the worse it tasted until I had to plug my nose to get the rest down. The amount I made came to about three 8 oz glasses. I drank two, and threw the last one away. Any tips on how I can make it taste better? Here's the ingredients I used:
1/2 cup (about 33g) Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein
1 cup 1% milk
1 large banana (peeled)
5 ice cubes
Is there also a way I can make it so I get less of a volume to my shake? For example, if I only added 1 or 2 cubes of ice I would only have a enough shake to fill two 8 oz glasses instead of three? Thanks.
Thanks. Might that make it taste better, too? What if I add an egg? That'd probably make it taste worse.
Well I use Chocolate flavored protein mix, what i normally do is; put two scopes of the powder (i make it extra strong), add one banana, about two or three cups of milk (I dont measure), 1 egg and blend it for about two minutes, For me it tastes like a dull chocky chocolate but it is very easily drank.. I actually like it.
I wouldnt use the ice cubes.
I normally go with banana, tahini, soy milk...and sometimes I add a little fresh spinach. I am sure you can add the Whey and get near the same (I have had it in similar concoctions).
I love em!
Good luck! Let us know what you figure out is good..

Oh, I forgot to mention that the protein I have is chocolate flavored.
Chocolate protein, peanut butter, milk and a couple ice cubes usually does the trick (I'll add some raw oatmeal to the blender as well sometimes).
Skip the ice and add in half a FROZEN banana.. or skip the banana and just use really cold milk or soymilk.. I love my choco whey protein shakes made with light, plain soymilk!
Another idea - consider using a bit less milk.. it will make it a bit thicker but it will not be 3 8oz glasses worth! I hope this helps..
I have vanilla whey protein... makes things taste weird, but all the same, I have to use half a serving to not make my shakes dangerously thick. It usually doubles the volume of liquid I use too, causing it to be 16oz shake from the 8oz of milk I use. With or without bananas it does this, and with or without ice.
I do a regular shake, 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup juice and then just add one scoop of vanilla protein powder...this morning I tried to add ground flax seed, blech!
Try experimenting with the whey protein you are using. Some of them taste unbelivably nasty. Unfortunately, there's really no way to know which one you'll like except trial and error -- try to buy the smallest size possible until you find one you love, or find a source that will provide samples.
I have chocolate flavored, and I've tried a few things....what I like the best is the protein, water, some ice cubes, about a spoonful of jello chocolate fat free pudding mix (just the dry mix from the box) and a spoonful of peanut butter. I've tried w banana and other stuff,a nd for some reason I really only like it w the bp, pudding mix and protein mix.
I keep my protein shakes simple; Designer Whey (french vanilla) stirred into Orange Juice. That's it. Tastes wonderful, like orange cream.
For a more dense, hi-calorie (but without powder) shake I blend 1 cup plain kefir with a frozen banana and a bit of vanilla syrup (like you put in coffee). Tastes just like an ice cream shake.
Years ago when I was underweight I blended a raw egg with the yuckier protein powders and it helped. But they didn't have the better flavors back then.
I never, never add ice to a shake. I tried plain water with a protein powder (followed instructions on the can) and it was awful. Never again!!!
Throw in some ( a cup or less) low-fat VANILLA yogurt (plain is weird) and it will cut the weird flavor of the protein powder perfectly (of course I use a vanilla protein powder too.)
I like bananas in them, occasionally with peanut butter and/or a squirt of honey. :0)
I like to add flavorings like strawberry, banana, or vanilla extracts. I also like to add the Tasters choice on the go decaffeinated singles sometimes taste almost like starbucks. More ice less water and it's a treat.
I use the exact same protein powder as you, joekame. Same flavor as well. For every scoop I use one cup of skim milk and it tastes alright. Whatever you do, DON'T MIX IT WITH WATER, it tastes disgusting.
Nothing I try ever seems to make my shakes taste any better. I think your best bet is to switch shakes. Body Fortress Vanilla just doesn't taste good -plain and simple.
You could also try the chocolate flavor and tell me how it tastes too so I don't have to buy it to try it ;) just playing
I just keep it really simple. I mix one serving of Chocolate body fortress from walmart, then mix with a tall glass of 1%. I add a squirt of hershy's chocolate to mask that nasty sweetner flavor mix like crazy and suck it down. My only real complaint is that the stuff is kinda gritty but the syrup helps.
I use vanilla soy milk from Trader Joe's and vanilla protein powder (the brand they sell at X-Sport) and I swear that you can't even taste the protein powder. I use 1 cup soy milk to one scoop protein poweder. Love it, love it, love it.
Okay, so here's an update. I mixed 2 cups of 1% milk with 2 scoops of the body fortress chocolate protein (I don't know if I mentioned that I was using chocolate flavor before) and about 1/4 of a large banana. I left the ice cubes out altogether. It tasted way better than the first time, it wasn't nearly as think, and it was only enough for a glass and a half. But I still can't imagine having a protein shake that tastes "delicious" as some of you of have described.
Hello joekame, don't be alarmed by the post I will give to you; it is from a woman's site but the women on this board workout like men...I go on here all the time to get workout information and diet advice.
This should give you more than enough information on ways to change up your current protein shakes.
Good luck!

I use Whey Factors French Vanilla, and I mix it with 1/2 banana, 1/2 c milk, 1 tbsp PB, and ice..if I want it bigger I add a little water (not cold water cause then it just freezes up and makes it like an icy block thing)
I used to use Body Fortress (stopped because I got rid of artificial sweeteners). I used vanilla for a while then switched to chocolate. The recipe above works well with that too if you like PB and chocolate. If not, it works really well to use 1/2 banana, 1/2 c milk, and coffee. Coffee brings out the chocolate flavor a lot more and makes it very yummy =)
