How much protein should a very active male teenager consume?
Asked by anonymous on Jun 09, 2009 in Family & Pregnancy

My 15 year old son is very active, plays ice hockey and works out with a trainer. I want to make sure he is getting the right nutrition.

Answer

For boys age 14 to 18, the Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is 71 grams per day; however, a healthy protein intake for your son can easily reach 150 grams a day.  Adequate protein assumes that an individual consumes enough calories to spare protein for work in synthesis and repair.  An adequate calorie intake for an active 15 year old boy is typically 3000 calories a day.  Your son will have to eat three large meals and in-between meal snacks too.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
