Protein shakes I think are most often used by lifters and even those who want to gain weight. They usually have a lot of calories, so I personally don't drink them because I will go over my caloric limit. Protein in general, however, will help you in weight loss because it builds lean muscle that helps reduce body fat and burns more calories.

If you're counting calories, protein shakes might be a bit much for you. If you can squeeze them into your diet, then make sure you're exercising regularly to make the most of the added protein. If you're looking to add a little protein in your diet but don't want it for that many calories, try fat free yogurt (Light n Fit yogurt is only 60 cals for 5 g of protein) or even Slim Fast high protein shakes (they're only about 190 calories for about 15 g of protein).

Protien shakes are a good breakfast for me when I do not have time to cook. Wal-Mart has an isolate that only has 4 carbs per serving with 140 calories.

I like chocolate the best.

I use protein shakes in my fitness plan, and have managed to lose quit a bit of weight!  may fav is:

1 Frozen banana

250 Grams frozen Strawberries

2-3 servings EAS vanilla Protein Powder

14 grams Milled Flax seed

500 grams skim milk

Yeah, about 500-700 cals.  But you can cut the recipe in half.  Excellent nutrition and very tasty!!

I eat a protein bar before I exercise everyday. They give me a boost of energy it seems, maybe it's in my head, but if I don't eat one it seems it's harder for me to complete my workout. They are rather high in calories though.

Even if you eat a protein bar before you workout, you'll burn it off and then some. So it probably works out in the long run.

I have one Designer whey chocolate protein shake before I hit the gym (and sometimes after if I was lifting weights) and it's 100 calories for 18g of protein, and I just make it with water...

Liquid whey protein is especially beneficial immediately following strength training or an intensive cardio workout. Liquid reaches the muscles faster and helps heal and repair. I drink it once a day after working out. Just the Whey protein. Not the muscle milk type drinks that have other ingredients. The kind I buy has 90 calories a scoop. I mix it with water.

You can find the protein powder without added sugar or calories.  I have a soy protein powder (soy protein isolate).  One serving has 110 calories, 24 grams of protein, a few vitamins and one gram of fat.

Like many of the posters above has stated, protein powder does not have to be high in calories. If you buy a protein isolate you can usually get something around 35 grams of protein for a measily 150 calories!

I have a protein shake after working out (evenings), but I definitely factor those calories into my calories for the day, overall.  Those calories are my last of the day.

They have different protein shakes some are for meal replacement and some you can add.

As a woman trying to lose weight I use Muscle Milk Light only 195 cal, 25 g of protein. It makes for a great snack between meals. Just add water.

Really? I've got to try it, I've never seen it before.

whey protein shakes are great!  I use one that has 90 calories and 16g of protein.  I add a couple handfuls of ice, 1/2cup 2% milk, and 8oz light yogurt and the whey protein and blend.  I use it as a mid-day snack and have been losing easily 1 to 2 lbs a week.

I take whey protein every day and also eat protein bars everyday.  The one I use also has only 90 calories, 16 grams of protein and 1.5 grams of fat.  I take them because I lift weights and do not get enough in my diet (I am a vegetarian).  I shoot for eating 50% carbs / 20% protein / 30% fat.  To get even close to 20% protein I must eat protein powder. :) Plus, the coco bean flavor is pretty good!

what are protein bars???

Im sorry if this question might seem stupid but i have no clue. Where i live there is no Mc Donalds, no Wal mart, no Shopping mall etc.... So far i have only seen one type of rpotein shake in one of the small supermarkets.. dotn even know if its still there.

I am doing a mixture of exercise such as some days 30 min alterning running and speed walk going uphill, and weitghts and then some days i do power yoga, swimming etc..

I eat eggs in the morning and tuna / chicken at lunch..  no protein in the evening.

What should be the percentage that i wam looking for? 50 % carb, 20 % protein ????

Wow, Cambodia?  Count yourself lucky that you don't have McDs or Walmart.

A protein bar is a glorified candy or granola bar.  They're usually pretty nutrient and calorie dense and focus on protein (surprise surprise).  Most are low on sugars so they are less likely to make you get a sugar high and crash.

I'm a fan of Clif bars because they're less cloyingly sweet than other brands.  http://www.clifbar.com/ ;

These shakes can have loads of hidden sugar.  Be sure to check the nutritional labels!!!  Whey protein is usually not that high in sugar...but really, sugar is in everything!!! SUCKS! Sugar (refined = body fat % to go up)

When I used to build, my personal trainer used to tell me to consume within 1 hour after my 1 hour weighlifting routine. RESULTS: build muscle mass, reduce appearance of body fat by replacing the "room" with muscle. It gives the illusion of an extremely lean body however if you want to lose body fat...turn up the heat -CARDIO, CARDIO, CARDIO!!!  NEVER GO TOO LOW ON YOUR BMI !!!  At one point I was an uhealthy 4%  Not good = cramping and other not so fun things.

Hi, 31 and started the medi fast diet which includes 4-100 calorie appettite shakes and one lean and green mel, whicj i ususally have a grilled chicken salad, I started on May 9th, 2008  at 313, the highest ever, i have high blood pressure and i dont want to die at an early age, i have 2 kids  a girl who will be 11 and a boy who will be 6...to date i am currently 283 pounds, it is a hard diet to only eat about 800 a day but i see its working and i really have no major side affects... i visit my doctor 1 a week to weigh in and pick up my week supply of shakes and it is 52 dollars a week, not bad cause i would prbably spend more money then that if i werent on this diet...lol really want to get to 150 then ill be happy

Umm, cardio makes you better at doing cardio, but it has no real effect on fat loss.

Cardio can be fun, it's enjoyable for its own sake, and it helps to create a calorie deficit you can live with without restricting your intake too much, but there is no difference between a calorie deficit created through burning calories through cardio or not eating them in the first place.

It's a common misconception, perpetuated by the likes of Shape, Cosmo, and other insults to human intelligence. But there is no actual difference in  fat loss between the effect of creating a calorie deficit through dieting or creating one through dieting+cardio.

See this rant by yours truly for more details than you'd ever want to know; and to learn what really makes a difference to your fat loss.
If you want a really good home-made berry flavoured protein shake that has the following break-down:

295 calories, 6.25g of fat, 31.5g of carbs, 28.5g of protein

-Half a scoop of Whey Protein Isolate, vanilla flavored

-140g of frozen rasberries or strawberries

-1 cup of low calorie cranberry juice (ocean spray, 40 calories per cup!)

-2 tablespoons of ground flax

Mix it together in a blender to make a cold smoothie.  The taste and consistency are great, plus you have all the fibre required for the whole day, as well as all the Omega-3 fat that you need to keep your hair, skin and nails healthy.
