Hi everyone,
i'm trying to up my protein intake, and i decided to try having protein shakes for breakfast. I didn't go and buy the little individual trial packs like i should have, i opted instead for the "value pack" of protein powder (complete vegan protein in natural vanilla flavour) and it is so gross.
its 25g of protein from various plant sources (hemp, soy, rice) and it's only 150 calories, so i'm really trying to drink it and learn to enjoy it, but it's not working.
i'm finding it just does not mix nicely, it tends to separate out, and it tastes too much like, well, soy protein.
can anyone reccomend a good tasting protein shake? I'm lactose intolerant, so i can only have plant based ones, or whey isolate.
How are you mixing it? I've never had a plant based protein-powder but I've found that if I try to mix whey by stiring it in a glass it doesn't mix well, but if I put in in a bottle and shake it, it mixes way better.
If you don't like the taste, try mixing it with something else that tastes better. A bunch of frozen fruit, milk, yogurt (or the non-dairy alternatives) and some vanilla protein powder is really good.
I find if I put in a blender with some soy or other milk substitute and sometimes a little oj as well. I usually also add some fruit, either fresh or frozen will work (frozen gives it more of a thick smoothie consistancy), it has a much better consistancy and taste. The blender also does a much better job of blending than shaking or stiring
**edit for bad grammar and redundantcy.
I love muscle milk light. I get it premixed though.
Thanks for the input,
I was shaking the powder with water in a bottle, it reccomended mixing it with water or juice. I couldn't really see mixing it with juice, but i tried mixing it with soymilk this afternoon, and that worked a little better.
I bought some lactose free yogurt and berries (oh i love summer time, so much in season!) and I'll try blending them. ... i was trying to avoid the blender so that i don't wake up my roomies (who don't have 8am classes lol) but if it will make my protein shake drinkable... i just may have to interupt their sleep. :P
note: i may try blending it with juice too, i mostly avoided it cus the powder is brown, and i thought it would look gross mixed with juice
I've experimented around with adding all sorts of stuff bananas are great if you like them. I've also used chocolate, peanut butter, almost anything sweet you like.
I agree with what the others said...blend it with ice, yogurt, and some frozen berries. Yum!
I take the Biggest Loser whey protein. It's great! The chocolate is so good I put it in vanilla yogurt or straight into my cereal! They also have drink mixes at only 40 calories so it's easy to drink and light on the cals.

It is worth waking up your roomies to blend it. My favorite is soy milk, banana, and 1 cup frozen strawberries, but you can do almost anything. Chocolate protein powders, espresso or coffee, soy milk, and black berries is nice too.
My favorite protein powder is spiru-tein. I love this stuff. I actually mix it in a single cup blender (not noisey at all and it was like $5 at GNC).
