It depends on the type of protein shake.  Slim fast will not curb your appetite (it doesn't mine), but there are protein shakes that have twice as much protein (and calories) that will defenitely fill you up.
I use muscle milk light. It tastes good and has 195 cals w/ 25 g protein, 11 g carbs w/ only 2 g sugar. I drink it right after my workout in the morning  and it helps me from getting the "mid-afternoon eat everything syndrome"
i drink gnc's 100% whey protein caramel chocolate and it's pretty good. only 120 cals for 21 grams protein. i drink it after my workout and it's great. it keeps me from wanting to eat everything in sight after a hard workout. and it's inexpensive!

I have found that the myoplex light are incredibly filling! i throw that in with half a bananna or some papaya and it is delicous and very filling.  you can order them online just google em. nutrition specs:

Myoplex light is great, if you want to do a post work out drink that tastes good on the cheep and is great for recovery, one scoop of Gatorade frost, 2 scoops vanilla whey protein powder, mix them up.
First, make sure that you consume SOME form of carbs(oats, whole grains, raisins,...Clif bars are great) and also essential fats (fish oil and/or flax supp., etc.) and protein preworkout, your body needs fats/carbs as an energy source, if you're going low carb/lowfat, your body will use protein  for energy, protein should be spared as a recovery agent. You will not be as hungry during the day if you do this, and your metabolism will thrive. I like Isopure zero-carb protein post workout, it's loaded with glutamine and BCAA's, I also pop a  multi-vitamin for some extra nutrition and anti-oxidants after a workout....
For me, I make a berry-protien smoothie.  I thow a bunch on frozen berries, plain tasting protien powder, and milk/soy milk into the blender and vola!  It's a great meal replacement or an after work pick me up!  It's great because has fiber to curb your appetite, a little sweetness to curb that sweet tooth, and protien for your sexy beautiful body.  My favorite health drink for the go.

-I have one tip, try to avoid those protien powders that add sugar, and other junk into them.. You don't want that in your diet!
Oh yeah, frozen berries are the best for smoothies, you don't have to add ice and they blend really nicely!
