Can too much, (if ur not working out) make you fat if you stay with in ur calories?  I eat 3 boxes of tofu( mori-nu silken light 20g protein each box) thats 60 grams of protein in just my tofu, plus I have a shake that contains 23 grams and another shake that contains like 16 or somthign and then whatever else has it in there, I have veggie burgers that have like 13 or so..etc.  I went on high protein because i thought it was gooooood for you..but i  hear you should on ly have so much per weight, I weigh 110, and that means i should only have 40 grms perday?!   I know that ur body only starts to store it after that, and I think its bad for ur kidneys?  ANyone there, that can fill me in on this mubble jumble?  I am addicted to my tofu.....i crave it.  I am sick of giving stuff up!  I gave up ketchup, and coke and popcorn whatever else I trusted was okay..I dont want to give up this, but if I have to cut down I will...

Penny,

You can lose weight by eating nothing but Candy Bars and Ho Hos, if you have a reasonable calorie deficit.

Mind you, too much protein is hard on the body and leads to a state of ketosis, which isn't necessarily a wonderful state to be in, but.. you can still lose weight.
ketosis? umm wats that? In simple terms please....like okay!? lol
It's a state of metabolism where your liver directly turns fat into fatty acids and converts them into energy. It's harder on your body than burning carbs, as it would prefer to be. It also leaves you with "Nailpolish Remover" breath.

hkellick-Can u die from ketosis?
How much is too much protein?
i more thn double mine....40 grms recommended 4 me
I had ketosis when I was on the Zone diet... sadly, because I felt really good and lost of a bunch of weight.
I think you can cause perm damage to ur kidney right pinkpony?  Do you still have it?
Many people in America get more protein than they need because of their high meat-eating diets. The food pyramid says we should only have about two servings of meat for a reason.

But, you're eating healthy soy protein, so it's hard to say. I would ask your doctor or research this, because as stated above, too much protein can be hard on the body.
The reason i ask is beasue i eat alot of tofu, but my mouth tastes funny, mind you I have a cold, so im not sure if its that or the start of ketosis....I tried to research but belive it or not, some info is saying that there is no such thing....huh?
I don't know if there is any information about short-term high protein consumption.  Over the long term, the things to worry about are calcium loss and kidney problems.  Eating lots of protein may put strain on your kidneys because your body doesn't store excess protein, it just breaks it down and excretes it.  It requires calcium to do this and will take calcium from your bones if there is not enough available.  One study showed that women who consumed over 95 grams of protein a day for several years had a 20% greater chance of suffering a broken bone than women who ate 65 grams a day.  This information is all from the Harvard School of Public Health.  They also have some information about soy that might interest you.

As for the smell...lol. I think it comes more from eating meat than protein specifically. Let's just say that on a basketball court, you can TOTALLY tell who eats a lot of meat and who doesn't.

Ketosis is the state you to go into if you follow the Atkins Diet and eat less that 20g Carb per day. It makes your body burn fat for energy.

Ketosis

Contrary to popular belief, the Atkins Diet actually consists of four diets, rather than just one. It starts with The Induction Phase, which lasts for two weeks. The goal of this phase is to "correct an unbalanced metabolism" by restricting the daily intake of carbohydrate to 20 grams or less. This isn't easy, especially when you consider that just one slice of bread contains around 15 grams of carbohydrate.

This quickly leads to a state known as ketosis. Virtually all low-carbohydrate diets are characterized by a rise in the production of ketone bodies (that's why you'll also see the Atkins Diet called a ketogenic diet). Ketones are produced when fat is broken down in your liver. The build-up of ketone bodies in your blood stream is known as ketosis.

When ketone levels rise sufficiently, they "spill" into your urine. Although Ketostix (small strips of card that you pee on) can be used to detect ketosis, they're not totally accurate. In other words, you can be in ketosis, but there might not be enough ketones in your urine to indicate ketosis. One other sign you're in ketosis is when your breath smells "fruity."

Getting into, and maintaining ketosis isn't easy. Even a small amount of carbohydrate in your diet can reduce the production of ketones. While some people report feeling tired and mentally "fuzzy" when they start a ketogenic diet, these symptoms tend to ease off after the first week or two, as your brain gets used to using ketones (rather than blood sugar) as fuel.
Thank you calgirl for clarifying ketosis!!

When losing weight, being in the state of "ketosis" is actually good because your body is burning your fat storages rather than the carbohydrates you consume.  You can enter ketosis in a few days by eating less than 20 grams of carbs, but it varies for everyone.  Some people can be in ketosis by eating less than 100 grams.

I have several friends who have tried Atkins and stayed in ketosis for weeks/months - they lost a lot of weight!  I am trying it now and have already lost a good amount of weight.  Atkins is definitely safe as a short-term diet or long-term if you follow his long-term maintenance guidelines.

I think depends on your activity level (and your body make up I guess) you can take as much as 0.6 to 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight. I know I been eating around 80-100g of protein with my body weight 108-110lbs. I don't stink :o Not even bad breath...

I also notice that I got more energy and more alert when having a good amount of protein than a lot of carb for my lunch (too much carb makes me lethargic).
