Provera

Has anyone ever taken Provera in order to jump start their period after losing it for a while? If so, did you have any adverse side effects?

Thanks!

I'm starting Provera this week too....

anyone else share any experiences??

yesterday I took my last provera pill, actually.

only "side effects" I had were like...sometimes a tiny bit of cramping and like some sort of movement down there :S which I hope is good, and means that there was some building in the lining of my uterus.  Other than this I had none other, except that in the last 2 days of taking provera, I had a sudden gain weight of about a pound or so..but nothing that will alarm me that much, actually I needed to gain weight so..Im hopign to see a period soon....if im producing enough estrogen I will be getting a period in 3 to 7 days or a little more...if not then I have to talk to my gyno to see whats the next step :/ I guess that if I dont get the period Ill have to take clomid which is gonna help me ovulate again.

either way..dont worry about taking provera!

must people dont experience any side effects, and if you are taking it because of a loss of mens cycle, I recommend you take it, just so you can speed up ur chances of getting that period back....amenorrhea is real serious, and having it for way too long can cause fertility issues :S

 best of luck :)

I'm taking a 10 day provera trial and I'm on my 7th day and have not experienced any side effects. I was thinking about looking up the side effects but I'm a very suggestable person and I'll probably assume the symptoms if I'm exposed to knowledge of them even if I don't actually have them. I was watching this informative video yesterday on youtube about menstrual cycles. It was an old video, probably made in the 70s but everyone kept saying really repetitive things to the interested young girl. One thing they kept saying was, "yes  Julie, all women get their periods." This made me really sad and feel like I'm not fully woman :-(

I'm recovering from an eating and over excercising disorder and right now I'm doing everything I can to protect my period potential. It was really hard to take a break from working out and to eat more food but I want my period back. I'm really worried about the long term consequences... I hope we all get our periods!

Glad to hear that there arent really any side effects.

Is this stuff natural though?? I hate the thought of putting chemicals/junk into my body (unecessarily)

Funny thing, my doctor said its not a big deal that I don't get my period. I was like -- what about cancer?? And she said, its a possibility (but she didnt make it sound like it was a huge concern.... i think she tried to explain that it may not be directly linked / doesnt necessairly cause cancer... just a possibility, which i guess is true - afterall, what DOESNT cause cancer nowadays. Aspartame causes cancer, its still in all the foods)

But it just seems kinda wrong for my doctor to say....??
My doctor was most unhelpful but my roommate is a medical student and said that what my doctor is doing is called the Progesterone trial. I guess progesterone is a hormone that is released (either before or after our period I can't remember) but my doctor is testing to see what the cause of my lack of period is. I have to take it for 10 days and I guess if my period comes then it's because my body isn't producing estrogen and my doctor will just put me on birth control pills for estrogen. But if I don't get my period I guess they're going to have to investigate why.... But yeah, Provera is progesterone, a natural hormone our bodies create so I don't think you'll get cancer or anything. I hate putting chemicals and junk into my body too! I picture the toxic stuff making my stomache glow or something.
I finished my tenth day on Provera yesterday and tonight I got my period! That was fast! I want to celebrate and have a period party!

OMG!  I took my last pill 0209, it's 0211 and nothing yet - except all the horrendous pre-period stuff from before I lost it.  It's like the symptoms are on steroids though.

I gained 2#'s since 0209, which totally sucks but I did split dessert two nights in a row . . .  That and I have been driving my husband and myself insane with emotions, I feel like I'm 14 or something.  Today, ah, today - I am going from being doubled over in gut wrenching pain (stomach is boiling lava and getting crampy "waves" like nausea) to functional but not comfortable - at all.

I can't believe I'm saying this but getting my period would be the best thing right now.   The wait continues . . .

I took Provera but for another reason and that was to stop a period. I wouldn't say there are not really any side effects from the pill you just ran into a few that did not have them. Here is a list of side effects from Provera:

http://www.drugs.com/pdr/provera.html

I was suppose to take a 10 day course of the medicine but had to stop before day 3 and go to the ER. I had some of the worst abdominal pain I had every felt. So bad in fact as soon as I got to the ER they had to give me a shot of pain killers. I also had an extreme change in my temperament. I was mad at everyone and everything I mean it was bad. My husband was afraid because of the anger I displayed. Once I stopped the medicine all the symptoms went away. They put me on something else but I forget the name.

Hmm actually I had some really bad abdominal pain too. I never get cramps during my period and always suspected other girls exaggerated their pain and didn't believe PMS was real. But when I took Provera, I had craps so bad I could hardly walk. I had to walk really slow but I thought the pain was worth it to get my period. I was also more irritable and less patient with people.... But after the ten days, I got my period on the 11th day, had it for 6 days, and now I feel fine.

bump.... i still havent gotten my period!

dude, seriously, what the heck you guys?  i'm 20 and i got my first and only period when i was 14.  i started on the depo provera shot IMMEDIATELY following my first period.  i flat out told my doctor that this is the 21st century and if he refused to use modern medicine like a civilized person to stop it, that i would do it on my own with a clothes hanger.  i was bluffing, but sometimes you really need to put your foot down when it comes to something as severe as BLEEDING FROM THE GENITALS.  seriously, i don't understand why anyone would willing endure the disgusting and barbaric monstrosity that is menstruation.  i feel like i'm in the twilight zone reading all this stuff about people WANTING to bleed from the genitals.

I was put on provera many years ago, and maybe they have improved the product since then.  I was about 28 at the time and I can say that I did get my period but for the few months that I was on it I literally was out of control.  I could not get a grip on my emotions.  Finally I was on vacation and literally was considering murdering my now ex and took myself off of the meds.  With in three days started to feel normal again.

My periods are on a normal cycle for the first time in my life (I am 45). By reducing stress, getting a bit of exercise, choosing to be happy and not drinking I believe has done the trick (just in time for menopaus).
