I have lost my period and my doctor has me on provera pills. I take one a day for 10 days and it helps me to get my period. I took provera for the first time about two months ago and got my period. Four days ago I started taking provera again.
Over the the past four days. I have been starving and all I can think about is food. I have eaten so much too. I am trying to loose about 9 more pounds to get me to my ideal goal weight. I feel so horrible and upset with myself. I have always been able to control my eating and I feel like i must have gained weight over the past few days.
Help! Should I discontinue taking these hormones? I have googled provera and many people says it leads to weight gain.
I would rather live without my period than gain weight.
As far as overeating, how do I stop myself???
Hey Musicismylife -- Just wanted to apologize if you found my previous post about hair loss too much stating the obvious. Of course you are aware about natural daily hair loss, but the reason I mentioned it was that there was a chance you were used to wearing your hair short and had recently grown it out in which case you may have become much more aware of normal hair loss (long hair tends to stick on things more). Anyhow, now I know that you lost your period and are losing your hair (more than usual), I'm going to again suggest go for a maintenance diet for a few months.
I know you are so close to your goal and I can see from this post that you are so frustrated with having an appetite, but you can easily eat up to 2000 a day and will not gain from where you are now.
Also, not having your period has pretty serious long term health impacts, so you've lost sight of the priorities if you think that not having a regular period is better than gaining weight.
Some women gain weight on birth control (provera and others), but not all. And if you are regularly exercising and maintaining your calorie intake somewhere around 2000 a day or more you shouldn't have any problems.
Your goal weight will still be there to complete in the New Year, but the priority now should probably be taking care of serious health issues.
And if I can't convince you to lay off for a few months, then at least speak with your doctor about the possibility of another birth control pill rather than giving up on getting your period altogether.
Hey - provera for 10 days once every 2-3 months is not known to cause weight gain or have really any adverse side effects because that is such a short period of time to be taking it. I have read about all the scary stories of weight gain while on provera too, but most of them are with people who take that hormone for a long duration of time/more frequently. Try looking at other things that could be causing the extra hunger. Ask your gyno too what is wrong. Maybe he/she will have other suggestions.
For now just watch your intake and try to plan out your meals so you don't eat off of impulse in order to control the extra hunger you're feeling right now.
i was on the pill and had the exact same problem i was contantly hungry. i also gained weight but my doctor told me this was normal and it was mainly water balancing in the body . there might be another brand that might not have this affect on you , i changed mine and i was ok with that could you see your doctor ?
