PSA: Better n' Peanut Butter = blech!

Quote  |  Reply
I typically avoid "diet" food such as reduced-fat-this, sugar-free-that, and opt for a smaller portion of the real stuff, or just omit completely. Well, I love peanut butter, and we all know that 1 serving of peanut butter is not much. At Trader Joe's the other day, I was about to pick up my regular crunchy peanut butter when I happened upon Better n' Peanut Butter, which promised 1/2 the calories of the real thing and tastes great, etc. In a moment of weakness [and greed--hey--I could get 2(!)servings for the same amount of calories in the real stuff!) I opted for the Better n' Peanut Butter. I got home, eager to try this product out, and lo and behold, it tasted like a$$ and I threw it out. Yuck! Tasted nothing like peanuts! The taste was synthetic-sugary nastiness! As such, ladies and gents, this product sucks--heed my warning lest you want to be out $4 and sorely disappointed! Trust me--your taste buds will want to commit suicide if you dare eat this stuff!

I totally agree with you -- why must there be the added sugar to everything that they remove the fat from?  I was very excited to try it -- having read lots of positive reviews in here.  Suffice to say, I really am just going to have to learn to stay away from the "too good to be true" claims of most "diet" foods, and stick with smaller amounts of the real stuff.

I have now wasted money on the Better n Peanut Butter and various Walden Farms products (I didn't really believe they could ALL be gawdawful... they are, to me)

Well, I completely disagree & LOVE the taste of Better'n.

And you are quite welcome to my share Wink

Seriously -- I do know that some people really like this stuff, otherwise I never would have tried it -- but it is a sterling example of how people's tastes are different.

I also hear rave reviews from that freeze-dried Pb2(just add water). Wow, sounds delectable(note the sarcasm)

LOL, freeze dried? No, pb2 is basically just peanut powder. They squeeze the oil out & you're left with peanuts & salt.  It's also delicious.

& yeah coach, it is crazy how different everyone's tastes are. I definitely won't sayBetter'n tastes just like peanut butter, but I never expected it to. There's a different flavor, almost mocha-y, that's delicious to me.

peanut butter doesn't taste like peanuts? are you talking about the natural stuff in which the ingredients are...wait for it...peanuts?

Anyway, I know some people love the better n' peanut butter, which is why tried it...but it definetely(sp?) doesn't come close to tasting like real peanut butter (and I mean the kind of peanut butter that has only peanuts + maybe a little salt)...

I agree with the OP. I hated that betternpb crap! YUCKY! It made me just want the real stuff more!

Wow, I really like Better'n Peanut Butter. The more I ate it, the more it grew on me. Also, it's really delicious in recipes, sandwiches, and such. Not so much straight from the jar.

Cutting healthy fats out of peanut butter and replacing with filler and chemicals just sounds really dated. Yeah, totally picturing my mom sipping on a Tab soda, performing her A-E-I-O-U facial exercises in the mirror straight out of her Richard Simmons book, and choking down a spoonful of Better'n peanut butter while listening to Kool and the gang back in the late 70's.

&nb sp;               &nb sp;           that part ^^ cracked me up

lmfao!  I was drinking some water when I read this and the water came out my nose while I was laughing!!

I returned mine to trader joe's and got a refund.

Not that Im old enough to remember any stuff gary mentioned but I do and hahahaha.

Older.  Picturing mom working out with Jack LaLane on TV.

Ive held off on the PB2 but not remembering hearing prior complaints although true, hard for even the most devilish food to please all. Might consider a sample but buying a whole thing- still too suspicious although the fans of laughing cow were dead right.

I've tried Better 'n Peanut Butter before. It is sweeter than regular peanut butter, but I like it.

As for chemicals, sugars, etc. I don't know what you're referring to. There is only 2 g of sugar in 2 tbsp of peanut butter, which is not very much at all. And there are no "chemicals." It's all natural. It just tastes different, which is to be expected.

I LOVE IT!

Eh, it may only have 2 g of sugar, but it also has a bunch of other crap in it...I wonder what "natural flavors" are? Anytime I see "natural flavors," it makes me a little nervous....I feel like I always see "natural flavors" in things like balogna (sp?) and hot dogs....maybe the secret ingredient in Better n' Peanut Butter is chicken feet or neck? bwahaha... Ingredients: Peanuts (as de-fatted peanut flour and natural peanut butter), tapioca syrup, pure water, dehydrated cane juice, rice syrup, vegetable glycerin, soy flour, salt, tapioca starch, natural flavors, paprika & annatto, calcium carbonate, lecithin, vitamins e & c (antioxidants). But, to each his own...eat what you like and like what you eat I guess...

Yeah, that stuff has way too much filler. "Natural flavors" can leagally describe anything approved for use in food. All peanut butter must contain 90% peanuts by law, and the amount of hydrogenated oil to prevent seperation is pretty much insignificant, so you're better off sticking with the real deal, whether it's natural PB or good ole Skippy...

I've tried PB2 and believe it or not the powdered peanut butter may sound weird but it really is good! you can control the consistency based on how much water you add to it. and it tastes just like the real thing! but only like, 50 cals and 2.5g of fat per serving.

Same here - I thought it mixed very nicely with my oatmeal, and makes a decent apple dip.  However, my hubby agrees with the other reviewers, as he thinks it tastes like "nothing that is supposed to be edible."  Varying tastes, and all that.

I actually really like it.  It makes a great pb and cucumber sandwich!
