They made me do a public weigh in at school a few weeks ago, the period after lunch, with all my cloths on (except shoes) and I was on my period. I weighed 10 lbs more than I did at home... oh and they announced the weights to the whole class. I felt embarassed because that scale put me on borderline overweight ( 144lbs at just under 5'5) when my home scale said 134 (now says 129ish). The school scale was electronic, mine is an older one with a dial. I put an 8lb weight on my scale and it said 8lbs. Also, everyone said they weighed 8-10lbs more...
Which scale should I trust?? And do you think public weigh ins are apporiate for school, I find them humiliating, always have, and I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.
I think thats horrible that your school did that. I see no reason anyone's weight should ever be public knowledge. All it will do it create problems, whether it be eating disorders or kids being made fun of.
Also, you don't sound overweight to me at all, and I'd believe your home scale. *hugs*
Why is your school doing public weigh ins? Is it a public or private school?
Talk to your parents about it imo.
Private school. There were only 6 people in the gym class, but I still felt embarassed.
144 pounds under 5'5 is overweight?!
Close to it. My doctor said for my size I would need a BMI of under 24, I think that is over 24. Maybe not overwight but close.

I agree with everything you said. I think it's a terrible invasion of privacy.
Regardless of which scale is correct, if they did that at my children's schools, they'd be surgically removing my foot from someone's backside when I found out about it. That's totally inappropriate and unnecessary.
How old are you? AFAIK, it is also inappropriate to use adult BMI calculators for teens and children.
Clint
I am 16, Junior in high school.
That would be awful and humilitating. I was heavier in high school and I would have been mortified.
I say trust the scale you always use, for consistency.
Ah, the glory days of high school PE.
Running laps and humiliating insecure kids...what could be more American than that?
I remember we had group physicals for football - it was an assembly line. You stripped down to underwear, then went around to every station.
Oh, and then when we did a health segment, we got in groups with the calipers and measured each others body fat. The girls got to stand behind a screen which was totally inadequate if you know what I mean - it was meant as an acoustic blind to go behind a choir riser. As such, it had an open section right around waist level...
Oh wow, if my daughter's school ever does that, there will be some problems. That's entirely inappropriate, and is only going to encourage unhealthy behavior for some students.
If it helps put your mind at ease, if everyone said the scale was off, then it was probably off. And they know it, and therefore they know that you weigh less than 144.
Stick with your home scale, and use a BMI chart made for kids and teens, like this one or this one at the CDC. An adult BMI chart is not accurate for someone your age.
67alecto - And here I always thought my high school PE classes were bad. I suddenly feel I have less basis for complaint.
We had a pool at my high school and rotated every 6 weeks to the pool. The swim suits were color coded by size. I squeezed into the same royal blue size 32 that all my friends wore even though I'm 5'10". High school gym sucks. Teachers need to be sensitive to size/weight issues.
You're in high school and they're still doing that?! No I definitely don't think that weigh ins are appropriate for multiple reasons, but first and foremost is because your weight is only the business really of you and you health practitioner and no one else!
Oh no that's horrible! It doesn't matter what size you are or how confident and happy with your weight you are, no-one should be made to weigh in front of others and then have the weight read out. Did they measure bra sizes as well and announce them on the school website??!!
I would complain to your parents and to someone in charge at school.
I thought my PE teacher was bad for continually slapping everyone's bum!
I totally agree with both DPLATZER and PBEAR99. What an invasion of privacy and humiliating, whether you're overweight or under. I went through something like this in 6th grade and STILL remember the day. I was very skinny but never saw myself too different from everyone else. I weighed in at 55 pounds. It was embarrasing.
Ally - I'd trust the home scale. Don't get down on yourself!

My mom told me they used to do that to her when she was in school - in the 1960's. She was underweight and remembers to this day how the other kids snickered at her and made fun of her for being too skinny (imagine that happening today!)
I never would have dreamed that practice was still in use today. I went to school in the 80s and 90s and I have personally never had that experience. Not only do I not know what the purpose could possibly be, but if it does serve some purpose, it should definitely be voluntary and no way shoudl they be making public announcements to the class!!!
I did a boot camp once and they weighed you and took your measurements before the first class, then again after it was over so you could track your progress. However, no announcements were made. To do so is highly inappropriate.

Wow - that is totally messed up -- sorry you had to experience something so invasive! I would talk to your parents about it - I know you likely don't want them to make a big fuss, but perhaps they can bring it up to the school principal in a calm way - maybe a quick non-emotional email asking out of 'curiosity' if this public weigh in is something that is practiced throughout the entire school district or just your school? There's a decent chance that the principal doesn't even know its happening and this could all go away quietly with no fuss if brought to their attention. In this type of litigious society, higher up school officials typically have more training/awareness of things that could become problematic - - maybe its just this teacher as opposed to across the whole school. If it is the whole school, I would recommend getting a bunch of parents to jointly sign a letter voicing their concern. And the concerns are very legitimate, for many of the reasons already noted here. Good luck!
