I've been logging pulling two children in a wagon (about 90-100 lbs total) as "walking with a stroller" (205 cal/hr), but it REALLY seems like more work than that.  Even walking at 2.5 mph is listed at 247 cal/hr.  So, after some searching, I found "golf - walking pulling golf clubs" (354 cal/hr) and then just "golf - pulling clubs" (411 cal/hr).

I'm a bit perplexed as to the differences here, and wondering which would be the most likely match to my actual expenditure.  Any suggestions or insights?

The other question I have is:  Does speed really matter, or does the same distance burn the same amount, it is just faster to go that distance at a higher speed, therefore, more calories in less time?

Oh, and I am pulling the wagon on a sidewalk, up and down hills, for about 40 minutes at a slow pace (estimating 2.5 mph, as it is only .8 miles there and back), with a break in the middle.  And to be completely honest, I often only have one in the wagon at a time (about 40 lbs per child). Still, pulling 50 pounds seems like it should be more than pushing a light stroller with a 20 lb kid.

Do you find that you are breathing harder than if you were just walking?  If not I would just log it as walking or walking with stroller.  I take my kids in a double stroller and the total weight is about 100 lbs between children, stroller and all the stuff I bring along and yeah when going uphill it's hard work, but on flat stretches the wheels do most of the work, so I just log it as walking briskly.

more than a stroller, imo. you are pulling a wagon and pushing a stroller. The pull is harder as you cannot rely on your bodyweight for that extra push.

See, I would liken pulling a wagon to pulling a set of golf clubs - its about the same amount of weight, the same walking speed, the same motion.  I don't know why there is such a big difference, which makes me hesitant to go with the golf clubs.

And we basically go uphill for a little bit, then a big downhill, and a big uphill.  Then turn around and do it backwards.  The downhills are enough that I am actually working to keep the wagon from rolling too fast, but definitely not as much work as pulling it uphill!

Oh, and here's the answer I found about walking speed and calorie burn:

Unless you're swinging a golf club 58-100 times, don't count it as golf, pulling clubs. That count includes the actual playing of golf as well.

Ah, thank you mabenner, that would explain it.
