pulse and blood pressure

Quote  |  Reply

Today I was giving blood, so I had my pulse and blood pressure taken.  I know the best person to ask is a doctor, but just out of curiosity, do my readings sound healthy for someone my age/weight?

21 y/o female

5'2",  150 lbs.

pulse:  64

blood pressure  108/70

Also, does anyone know what is the better indicator of general health?...  weight & BMI?  or e.g., pulse and blood pressure?  I know that in the weight/BMI category, I am considered overweight-- but I also consider myself physically fit and generally healthy.  If my pulse and blood pressure are healthy, does it mean that maybe 150 lbs. is the right weight for me?  I'm confused!  I still think I need to lose weight, but could my body be telling me differently?

Those are both pretty normal.

And, as many people will tell you, BMI is a bad indicator of personal health. Nutrition, exercise, proper sleep and stress management are key, and far more important than a number on a scale. If you exercise and eat well, yet would still need to engage in unhealthy behaviors (extreme calorie restricting, etc) to get your weight to drop, then yes, maybe you're not supposed weigh less than you already are. A BMI of 27.4, although technically overweight, is really not that much above "normal."
