Today is July 20th and I am due for my period any day now.
I am taking a 10 day cruise on August 20th and I know I am going to get my period for the cruise. I stopped taking my birth control pills months ago. I am wondering if I started taking it this month (Sunday, 7/26) and skipped the sugar pills, would it prevent me from getting it in August?
I want to enjoy this vacation SO much and I don't want to stress and feel cramps and not be able to swim.
ANY SUGGESTIONS????????
I need to push it OUT!
I haven't taken BC pills since November. Do you think it will work the first month?
I would not count on being able to manipulate your period start by starting bcp a month before the cruise.
Why can't you use tampons for when you want to swim? My period has never stopped me from swimming.
Is there something else I can do?
It's not only the swiming. I get very sick when I have my period. Cold sweats, fever, throwing up. I usually have to wrap myself up in a ball and stay in bed.
Do you think if I took the pills, my period might not be AS BAD as it is normally?
I really wish I could skip it =(
Have you talked to your doctor yet (you'd need to to get the rx)? S/he'll be able to give you a much better idea of what is possible.
When I started the pill, years ago, it was because of very painful cramps. Going on the pill helped.
Why did you stop taking the pill?
Because I was gaining so much weight. I managed to lose 25 pounds since I've been off. I was really unhappy with the weight gain...
I guess I will have to go to the Dr. and ask...I just thought maybe starting the pill would mess up the cycle somehow....and then I wouldn't have to worry about the cruise.
It might, but your doctor would know better.
When you first start the pill (at least all the ones I've been on), you are supposed to either do it the first sunday after your period starts or the first day of your period. In order to push it back, I think you'd have to start it later than that, and I don't know if that's ok (probably not for birth control reasons, but if that's not your goal, maybe it wouldn't be a problem).
Typically, your first few months on the pill will be a little weird - spotting, etc. I have a friend who started the pill and wanted to skip the first period, so skipped the sugar pills, and it didn't work - she still got it that month. So there isn't a guarantee that it will work as planned.
So you think I should try starting the pills a week LATE?
I don't think anything except that you should talk to your doctor.
If you start it as prescribed, I'd guess that you will most likely start your period the same time it would start otherwise (that is, on your cruise). If you skip the sugar pills, my only example of someone trying this on the first pack indicated this might not work as hoped (spotting, which can be just as frustrating, because you don't know when it will pop up, and there isn't enough to use a tampon).
If u skip the sugar pills n start a new package without taking a break, u shouldn't get any period. At least that's what my gyno said. She also said that it's not recommended but once a year or something it will do no damage. But the best thing is ask ur doctor...
But I'm not actually ON the pill right now.
Will that still work if I tried it THIS MONTH?
I want to skip my period NEXT MONTH. If I take 4 straight weeks of pills (no sugar pills)...do you think that will work?
I am going to call my doctor later...
I tried to do something similar for my wedding a couple years ago. I gave myself 3 months to work up to no placebos with my doctors ok. It worked, but it totally backfired later. My cycle was off for the rest of the time I was on BC and I ended up just giving up. I would go a couple months with nothing, and then a solid MONTH of bleeding. It took a good half a year before my cycle was normal again. But now I have way more intense cramps than ever before. I am not sure if its because of the BC, but I am still not happy about it.
It's really not worth it IMO. Especially if you already have TTOM issues, I would not try to rush into it.
P.S. I was afraid to open this thread the first few times I saw it because of the phrasing in the title. haha. Pushing out makes me think something completely different than trying to prevent it. haha!
Did it work for you hotfuss?
The thing is, I am NOT on the pill right now AT ALL!!! I haven't been on it in months.
So if I start taking BC after this period (Sunday), and come Aug 20 (when I'm due)(cruise time) instead of taking the sugar pills, take week 1 of the next batch....you think that may work?

erm, you actually read my post right? I edited everything but the highlights since you seemed to miss them the first time.
You just need to talk to your doctor about how healthy it is and then decide for yourself if the benefits are worth the risks. I regretted doing it for my wedding, so a boat cruise would NOT be worth it for me.
i think that instead of continuously asking every poster in this thread the same question (clearly hoping for a specific answer)...you should just bite the bullet and ask your doctor. wow.
OK i've been on the pill for about 12 years. I'm no expert but i've messed around with it many times so that it would skip. my doc says it's completely fine to skip periods. what happens is this: you start a new pack of pills usually the sunday after your period starts. Now you don't have to start them on a sunday; I start mine on a Friday so that I don't have my periods over the weekend. ( I start a pack on friday, take 3 weeks of pills, then my period starts on a monday and ends on wednesday and i start a new pack up again). anyway if you have your period say this week and it starts tomorrow (tuesday), start your pack of pills on Sunday. take 3 weeks worth of pills and instead of taking the sugar pills, start a new pack. So basically you keep taking the active pills without a week break. I've never had a problem doing this and my period does skip, but it's different with everyone. When I skip my period, the week I should be bleeding, I still usually spot...... no blood, but that nasty brown stuff for the days when i'm supposed to bleed. So it just depends on your body. I tend to find the brown stuff pretty nasty and annoying and would just rather bleed than deal with that! It doesn't hurt to try messing with the pill though. try to figure out the weeks and when you go on your cruise so maybe you will completely avoid it skipping during your cruise week. Like maybe your period will just start a week before your cruise.... it just depends when the cruise is and when your period will start this month. Hope this helps :)
From my own experience, after not being on the pill for awhile and attempting to skip my period without waiting, instead, I got my period anyway, and it lasted for over 2 weeks and it was heavy some days, light on others, and mostly brown in color. Wasn't worth it than for me to simply get my period for 4-5 days and there wouldn't be any yucky surprises!
Please consult with your doctor!
You can run two packs of the contraceptive pill together missing your break but if you keep doing it you will get break through bleeding.
As waley said it's perfectly fine to use to packs together in an attempt to miss your period. The only problems with this being;
1) If you aren't already on the pill, you aren't guaranteed that it will regulate anything as it usually takes a few months (2 - 3) for the pill to regulate your system.
2) You have described sugar pills which leads me to believe you have BC pills which taper hormone levels towards the end. If they are not a steady dose pilll, your body starts gearing up for your period much earlier than the sugar pill week so simply skipping the pill will not stop it.
3) Let's say best case scenario - you have been on the pill for a little while, and you are on a steady does pill not a tapered dose pill - you will have breathrough bleeding or "spotting". All in all a light cycle would be better than a full blown one.
Speak to your doc to see if there is a better way. There are pills out there now that allow you to skip your period for up to six months! (Not saying they will work on such short notice but they're out there)
Good luck and have a great vacay no matter what!
what I would do is once you start your BC pills after this month's period (july's period)......start the next group of pills....and when you come to the week that you're supposed to go off your pills to have your period.....just start the next pack of pills right away instead of taking a week off.
It'll push your period back a month.
This is how pills like Seasonol work.
