quality time on a budget?

Quote  |  Reply

So my husband brought up last night he thinks we need to spend more time together.  Well, we already do spend almost every night together, but either watching tv or him playing video games/ me reading.  So it's not necessarily "quality time".

The reason why we are such couch potatos are that we are generally BROKE- paying off a lot of debt right now.  So home is as cheap as it can get!  Does anyone have any ideas for activities we can do together that are cheap or free?  Ones I've thought of: walk/bike ride (although it's snowy right now), game night... ?

And no he does not workout so the gym is not an option! :)

Look thru your local community college or YMCA catalogs and take a class together on something that you both think you'd be interested in.  They are not usually that expensive, and there's so much to choose from - fitness, crafts, music,  gardening, you name it.

Also, do you both work and/or are you near each other at your work place(s)?  If so, could you go to lunch together?  A cheap "date" would be to meet at a local park for a quick picnic.  A great way to spend some time together without the distractions of home.

play games with him! problem solved!

There are so many things you can do that don't requite money (or much money)

Alot of local parks are free and alot of museums and zoos are cheap, at least.

A Picnic, A Walk in Nice Weather, Playing certain games together (In the bedroom and outside ;) ), Ice Skating or just sit down someplace, turn the TV and games off and just chat for a bit.

My fiance and I play Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit alot. We also play video games together. If we feel we want to get out, we go to the dollar movies or we walk around the big mall and window shop.

Also, the city we live in has a community center with a swimming pool, lazy river, and an ice rink. They send out Buy One Get One admission coupons in our community paper.

Check out stuff in your paper too...it seems a lot of places are having special discounts because of the crummy economy. At least around they are, in Detroit, with the crummiest un-employment rate of all.

My family enjoys playing golf.  The local public course charges $6.00 for a round of nine holes and you can rent clubs for $3.00.  We are beginners and it is very fun just to spend some time together without any distractions.  Great exercise too!

My hubby and I used to have a weekly dinner in which we'd cook together then sit down and eat together without the TV on.  It was very nice - I miss it!

Another idea, walking!  A great way to get some exercise and have time to talk uninterrupted.

Puzzles!  Alex and I used to spend time putting puzzles together.  When it gets easy, try doing them face down.

We've also got a deck of cards we play around with at times, and a few board games.  Ahh, nostalgia. :D

Play boardgames like Monopoly! Read magazines together! Give each other a massage! :)

My husband and I took up swing dancing lessons.  May take some convincing at first ;). But we now love to get out and dance, and  it's great exercise too.  We're thinking of trying salsa next.

Cards....has cards been suggested? Anything from gin to rummy to go fish. That is my favorite 'free' thing to do.....that and scrabble.

here's what i got:

  • as mentioned, dance classes. they're like 10 bucks a pop
  • ice skating/roller skating. $6/person
  • indoor swimming @ a municipal pool. a couple dollars or free
  • a walk/hike through parks/trails. even in winter, it's nice. just bundle up!
  • incredibly, happy hours at nice restaurants can be cheap. a couple bucks for a glass of wine or beer you can nurse for a while, and free appetizers!
  • most tourist places have winter discounts now, especially on friday nights, like aquariums and such.
  • um, karaoke night @ a bar? FREE and fun(ny)!
  • pool/billiards @ a dive bar. a coupla quarters
  • bowling!

for instance, i just set up 6 dates w/ my bf, and they cost $98 for the both of us total, food and drinks included.

A nice evening walk.

Cooking a nice dinner together - my guy and I do this sometimes, I make supper and he makes dessert. we pick out what we're going to make first, go grocery shopping together then cook and sit down to enjoy dinner together -- usually with some super nintendo or chess.
