Question about Almonds.
I have been snacking on almonds lately to a) get some "good" fat and b) because they are yummy.
I bought some raw almonds yesterday. Plain. So here's my question (as silly as it is). If I roast them in the oven. With no oil, no salt, does it change the nutritional information? Are the benefits that I am getting from almonds the same even though they are roasted?
It shouldn't change anything.
They might not come out the way you want it because it dosent have the extra oils that roasted nuts do but no it wouldn't change anything at all if you heated them up in your oven :D
Thanks guys!! I knew that, and yet somehow I wasn't sure.
I tried a couple last night to see how they would be. Overdid them a bit, and they weren't as good as some of the bought ones, but still tastier than raw!!
Oh, man - I MUCH prefer raw almonds, but to each his own!
You can also toast nuts in a dry pan over the stove - it gives you a little more control over how toasted they get. I'd stick with a regular, not non-stick pan (to avoid heating bare teflon)
i prefer raw, as well, but occasionally i'll microwave them. brings out the sweetness, but if you're roasting, i'm guessing you're into the savory. :)
you can also soak them - in water - just cover and soak overnight - they are easier to digest and take on a whole new taste/ sensation
different but still yum
I'm loving them roasted, but now I'm going to have to try them microwaved & soaked!!
Thanks everyone!!
I heard it does convert a little bit of the fat into different kinds of fat, but it would depend on how long you roasted, and at what temperature.
Okay, so I googled it. Found an awesome website if you have some time to read.
If you're just curious about my original question:
To roast almonds at home, do so gently--in a 160-170°F (about 75°C) oven for 15-20 minutes--to preserve the healthy oils. For more on the effect of high heat roasting on nuts, please see the following article.
I always knew almonds and nuts were good, but never knew how good. Interesting reading...
