I typically workout 6 days a week.  This week has been very crazy with appointments for our upcoming wedding (10/3/2009).  My question is, on days that I am not working out (I skipped 2 days this week), should I be using the BMR for sedantary and figure my calorie deficit on that?  I should mention I have been eating my calorie limit (about 1650) on these days also.

My stats:  Age: 26  CW: 186  GW: 165  Height:  5'8''  Goal Date:  approx Aug 31

Just a little confused!

What activity level are you set at now?

Also, just a nit-pick - BMR is the basal metabolic rate, so it's what you burn without even sedentary activities. So there isn't really such a thing as "BMR for sedentary" because BMR is the same regardless of your activities - but your actual burn (you could call it AMR - active metabolic rate) does change.

I think you should go by your success so far - if you've been losing weight at a constant 1lb/week, by working out 6day/week, and you missed a couple workouts, you might want to eat a little (but not much) less on those days - maybe 1500. But especially if you are doing things like lifting weights and HIIT, your extra burn from the exercise doesn't end when you leave the gym, so I wouldn't lower it too much.

When I was losing, I always aimed for a range (1450-1650) and went towards the lower end on non-workout days and towards the higher end on workout days.

I'm currently set to moderate, is this too high?

Honestly I haven't been losing 1 lb per week, I lost about 12 lbs and then it just stopped around April/May even though I continue to do the same thing.  I figure I'll just continue to stay on track in hopes it'll go back to losing again.

I think moderate sounds right, as long as you aren't logging your exercise on top of that, and without running the numbers, 1650 sounds good (and maybe it'll be good to have a few rest days and still eat that much).

Congrats on your wedding - mine is a week later, but we don't have our major appointments til the end of this month.

No, I'm not logging on top of that, when I first started I did but then I quickly figured out it was wrong :)

Congrats on yours as well!  We are picking out invitations tonight so that should be a very long and daunting task, lol.  And I'm freaking out because I just learned yesterday that my dress will not be shipped until 8/25 so it won't be received by the store until 8/31!  AAAHHHH!!!  I was not a bridezilla until I found that out, lol!

Good luck with planning, so much fun isn't it!

Eek! So you are only seeing it a month before the wedding?? I can understand the freaking out!

Picking invites was making both me and FH annoyed, so we ended up asking my brother to design for us (and we are printing at Staples) - so much nicer than anything we were seeing online.

I tried the a sample of the gown on, same size I ordered so I at least know what needs to be altered but that was in February and I have to keep looking at pics so I remember what it looks like, lol.  Eden Bridals style # 584.

Our reception venue provides the invitations as part of their package, we just have to go to the place and look through tons of books and select them.  They had some online so I think I pretty know what I want.

I wish we had someone artistic enough, that would be so cool and a real personal thing for memories.

What dress did you purchase?

Mine is from Joli Bridal, but it's not longer viewable online, because I got it as is (factory consignment) - meant that I was able to take it home that day. Good news, it was a lot cheaper than I had feared, bad news - I try it on obsessively whenever my FH isn't around.

I tried on one like that at the store, it needed to be fixed in 1 area but then I tried on the gown I purchased and I really liked it.

I would be doing the same thing but I won't have that chance, as soon as I get it it's off to the seamstress! lol

Your Harris BMR is 1608

Your Mifflin BMR is 1635

depending on activity you multiply by a factor of 1.2 to 1.9 with 1.9 being the most active.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR)

I would say if you are just missing a few workout days, don't worry too much about changes to your intake.  However, if it starts to be a habit, then you might need to re-adjust.

I also wanted to throw you some support in meeting your goal.   I was married last August and had almost the exact same goals you do.  I started at 185 and was able to get down to 168 for my ceremony and party.  I think even more exciting is that I've maintained that weight for almost a year now.  So here's to meet your goal and maintaining!

Congratulations.

Axonic, that is truly inspriational!  I've been tourmenting myself with this goal and wondering if it's even obtainable.  I actually stated at 197 so I've had some success thus far but lately my weight hasn't moved.  What did you do to make your goal weight by the wedding?

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
