Question about Breakfast

Quote  |  Reply

When looking for an answer to this question, I noticed that alot of people eat pretty large breakfasts. I usually eat an apple, sometimes a coffee. Should I eat more for breakfast?

well all i have is a cup of black coffee and some whole oats oatmeal w/water..thats only 150 cals.....I usually save my calories for later in the day when i go out and am more active.....this did not damage my weight loss at all and i always have energy.

Many people will tell you that an apple and coffee is not breakfast. Personally I would have to agree. Breakfast has a number of different purposes. One: break the fast. Two, start your metabolism. Three, keep you full for a while until a snack or lunch. Also, for whatever reason eating apples in my mind just makes you feel hungrier shortly thereafter. I like to have something more filling, like egg whites or oatmeal to help keep me full.

With that being said, if it works for you, then do it. I agree with carolinamoon when she says she likes to save calories for later in the day. I do too, which is why breakfast is normally my smallest meal. However, I would still recommend something more substantial than an apple. Maybe an apple and a bowl of cereal? An apple and an omelete? An apple and oatmeal? Just my opinion though.

Ok, I guess my question would be, would something else be better for "starting my metabolism"? Or should I just have a more substantial breakfast if I'm hungry between breakfast and lunch?

I think that an apple and coffee counts as breakfast.  Last semester, I considered a cup of Kashmiri chai from my favorite tea shop (2/3 tea, 1/3 soymilk, some honey) to be breakfast!  I don't get that hungry in the morning, plus I'm not as crazy about breakfast foods as I am about other things.  I'd rather save my calories for later in the day.

That said, I'm a college student.  Breakfast usually happens right before my first class of the day, which starts at 10, but my lunch hour is 12-1.  If I ate a big breakfast, I wouldn't be hungry again until 2:30 or 3, by which time the dining halls are closed.  Breakfast for me is more of a snack that tides me over for a couple of hours until lunch.

i have basically changed my body and metabolism so much that i NEED a big breakfast to get my day started.

i usually have a bowl of kashi cereal, almond milk and a banana.. a piece of toast with peanut butter, and some cottage cheese with berries... that's at like 8am.. and then i have my apple and almonds to snack on by 10:30am.

i get made fun of for constantly eating..but it works for me!

breakfast is something I constantly struggle with.  I usally feel kind of "ill" in the morning, It is something that I have dealt with since I was in High school. ( I think it came from my brother making fum of the way I chewed cereal Tongue out)  But seriously, I can't eat more than some kind of fiber one bar or a bit of cereal in a light yogurt and even than I might not be able to finish it.  My lunch stomach usally kicks in at about 1:00 and that is the meal I pay alot of attention to, because I finally feel hungry.  Everybody is different,  what someone does my or maynot be right for you.  I think the most important thing to remember is to eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full.  Oh yeah, and move more!  That is my new diet book. Laughing

I think an apple is FINE! Your starting your metabolism, and if it doesn't make you SO hungry that by 10am your reaching for donuts to spike your insulin, I'd say your just fine. Remember, its ultimately calories vs.calories out. Do what works for you.

breakfast should be your largest meal, without a doubt.

Hi, I know we are told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but...if I start the day off eating a big breakfast, it is like I am starting a food frenzy for the day.  If I eat a big breakfast I eat more throughout the day.  It's like I am then waiting for the next meal.  I make sure I have a good protein, and carb for breakfast,  but it isn't really a big meal.  I always wondered why I react that way.  But to answer your question, I think if that apple and a coffee gives you the energy and mind clarity to start the day, then whatever works for you is good!  If you don't feel ready for the day and are starting in slow motion, add a protein if you can.  Maybe cottage cheese, a couple slices of "good" deli ham or turkey or a little peanut butter on your apple!  Good luck!
