Question for diabetic people

Quote  |  Reply
Here's the background information: I am a 21yr old girl who isn't over/underweight or have any physical problems so far. However, my paternal grandmother and her son, my dad, are diabetic.

I get tested with my dad's diabetes kit at home time to time (which was about few years ago), I have no problems. Last time I went to my doctor's, several months ago, urine test came out fine. I have sweet tooth but I try to take sweets in moderation.

Last several weeks, I realized that when I go to bathroom, my urine have this distinctive unpleasantly sweet smell to it. Not foul at all but just.. weird sweet smell. Only after eating sweets though. If I have no/low sugar intake, urine doesn't smell sweet at all.

Few days ago, I ate about 5 of those special K bars in one day. Now, I know that doesn't sound much. When I bought it, it was waaaaay too sweet for me(I would nibble on them like rats for thirty minutes on one bar) so I haven't been really eating them. Until one day, I ate one, then just went kinda crazy and ate four more.. I'm not sure if that's relevant to my question but just in case.

So my question being, does that sound like I might be diabetic? Can you develope diabetes in matters for 3~4 months, esp when you've been trying to eat healthier with low sugar intake? I do plan to go to doctors but that won't be possible a couple of weeks. Google says I probably am but I wanted to hear your opinions because you guys are knowledgable and are super cool :P

The three main symptoms of new onset diabetes are

Polydipsia - Drinking alot

Polyuria - Peeing alot

Polyphagia - Eating alot

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I was drinking 3-4 2 liter bottles a day and waking up twice a night to go to the bathroom.

If you have concern, see a doctor to be sure

Hi! I have a history of diabetes in my family; grandparents, parents and 2 sisters!

I also have a major sweet tooth! 9 cavitiesEmbarassed. I had my first fasting glucose test done last year (recommended by the doc), my glucose level was 108! I was alarmed. as I was almost on the verge of being pre diabetic!! I had the same symptoms, I was thirsty, frequent visits to the loo etc. So, anyways... to answer ur question, when u eat anything, your glucose level may go higher compared to someone who has no family history of diabetes, but it does not mean u are diabetic yet!

I recommend, you exercise at least 30-40 mins 3-4 times a week, switch to brown bread and go easy on potatoes! Exercise will cut your risk of diabetes by 60%.

Guess what? I had my tests done again, a month back my Glucose level came down to 88!!!! So see, you just need to make real slight changes n exercise. I am not an expert so the doc always gives the best advice.Smile

Hope I have helped a bit.

I would make sure you see a doctor as soon as you can.

In the meantime jot down your symptoms and keep a food diary.

Track your fluid intake/output (measure the amount you are peeing per day, also the amount you are drinking. You should be more thirsty than normal, and peeing a lot if you do have diabetes).

Also see if you can get some Keto-Sticks from the pharmacy, that way you can measure the glucose level in your urine.

But please please please do not rely on my, or anyone else's advice here, please see a doc as soon as you can.
have you had sex recently? sometimes that will make your pee smell sweet.

gross. i know. but you're the one that brought urine up.

I agree with everyone who said see a doctor.  We can give you all the advice in the world, but a simple blood test will tell you for sure.

Whether you've got diabetes or not, try to revamp your diet so that you stick with whole grains, fruits and veggies, and lean protein. Talk to your doctor about adding cinnamon to your diet.  It can help regulate blood sugar.

Best of luck.

What kind of diabetes runs in your family, type I or type II?

If Type I, then yes, I would call the doctor asap. It would be unusual for you to develop this type at age 21, but not impossible - I know someone who did. It came on very suddenly. She had been losing weight for no reason, she was thirsty and peeing a lot, and then one day passed out at work, going into a coma. This is a HIGHLY unsual case, however. Most people with Type I are born with it.

Type II is called "late-onset" because it usually arises after a lifetime of being overweight and having bad eating habits. It would be unusal for you to develop this type at age 21, if you have never been overweight. But, not impossible either. Type II is being diagnosed at younger and younger ages, even children can have it... BUT, usually they are overweight.

Type II runs in my family. My dad was dx'ed at age 55, as were most of my aunts and uncles on his side. My dad, upon diagnosis, cracked down on his diet, lost weight, and he now keeps his in control without medication (though he does monitor). His siblings have had to take medication to keep theirs under control.

When I was a little older than you, I was dx'ed as "prediabetic" during my second pregnancy. I went on to lose weight, exercise, and watch my diet, and kept in the "normal" range for two decades. It's only recently, at age 42, that this has been getting harder to do... but I'm still not full-blown yet.

And yes, my pee does smell sweet from time to time! Also I have always had to urinate frequently, upwards of 12 times a day.

My advice would be to see the doctor, and if everything checks out, take this as a warning that, given your family history, you need to be extra-special careful and take steps NOW so you don't develop diabetes later.

That includes no more special K bar binges. :-)
I am not only a type II diabetic but an RN as well. I agree with everyone who said go and see your doc, but if you cannot get in to see him for a couple of weeks, I would suggest making the appt asap and then using your dad's glucometer a few times a day and keep a record of the readings to give to your doc and also make a list of any symptoms you may be having such as night sweats, urinary frequency, becoming shaky/sweaty if you miss a meal, excessive tiredness, headaches, excessive thirst or excessive hunger. Keep a diary of intake, excercise, symptoms, and glucose readings. Mark each entry with a date and time and bring it with you to your doctor's appt, that way if you are diabetic you will not delay treatment. And I have to agree with jenmcc....since begining a diet and excercise program, I am now off all diabetic meds (glucophage & insulin) and my sugars that were 120s fasting before are now between 85-95 all the time, so just because a person is diagnosed with it doesnt mean it cant be treated without meds. Good luck!
