question? (eh . . for girls only)

hi. I've been put on a gaining diet to get my period back and I've been following it faithfully for the past month. I was surprised yesterday when finally, I noticed some stains! I thought maybe my period finally came back - but I've noticed the stains are BROWN and this "period" of mine is really, really light (as in, light). Does this mean I still have to keep gaining until I get a real (normal) period, or am I now at my ideal weight? Any help would be great.

Your ideal weight is not going to be the bare minimum weight for you to get the very beginnings of a period. And you shouldn't stop gaining until you've discussed it with your recovery team. After all, you are gaining to get healthy, not just to re-gain your period, right?

what is your bmi ? how many calories are you consuming ?

i'm not really sure about my BMI since I don't have a scale at home. But if you DO base it on the BMI chart thing, I was never really underweight. But my body was functioning as if it WAS underweight.

Oh, and I've been consuming around 2700 calories a day - mostly carbs, not much fat, and with moderate amounts of protein.

if your bmi is 20 this is still low but would be worth gaining a lttle more your body might br wanting to be a bit higher. the fats is a key factor if you arnt eating alot of fat this could be the reason. what about your activity?

There is more to being healthy then just your period. Yes this is important but I got mine at a low weight and still needed to gain to prevent other health issues. Also for some it can take time. Just because you are doing better now it takes time for your body to repair. Tessa asked a good ? though regarding your activity.

I just got back from my nutritionist, and she said I was doing great - I'll just have to continue the gaining diet for a month then I'll go back to maintaining.

I jog (or do pretty much any cardio) for 30 minutes 5x a week.

Oh, and my BMI is 20.4 - and I've gained 1.5 kilos since September 15. Which is . . not a lot, actually, even though I've definitely noticed my jeans are tighter and my right arm is now larger than my left arm.

When i was underwight i also lost my period too. When i got to a healthy weight it came back, and i also noticed the first one was very light and it lasted a very short time ( 1 day or 2 days), but then the next period i got was normal.

So i guess that happens normaly

You said you don't eat many fats - I'd increase your fat intake (healthy fats mostly, of course) and we ladies need fats to produce estrogen and menstrate.

As for the brown splotches, if you haven't had your period in a while, the brown is basically dried blood (tmi) that's now getting out. Basically, youre on the right track, but don't get too excited yet - it's spotting if it doesn't last more than three days and is very light.

But congrats on your weight gain and congrats on your first step towards getting your period back!! : D

xx
